Katherine L. says, "James Wengrow was the guitarist, MD, and producer for the music of my wedding last fall. From the initial consultation to the very last dance, James made sure the process for hiring our wedding band was simple, seamless and made for an incredible reception. His experience and knowledge was recognizable from our the first call — we had our reception at a gorgeous, spacious museum with over 200 guests. He made multiple recommendations about the set list, the number of musicians, sound engineers, equipment, etc. throughout the process and was transparent about expectations and costs the whole time. He did a ton of research to find what would be best for us, sourced everything and kept us filled in every step of the way which was hugely reassuring. He also took into account our preferences for music genres and made sure the set list and instruments reflected our tastes. James expertly organized the band—all highly talented musicians—who played jazz standards in guitar/bass/drums format for the cocktail hour and then a full band playing pop, rock, and R&B hits from multiple decades for the main event. The singer, Leah Rich, was incredible, and James' impressive skills on the guitar were also noted by many guests - he was absolutely shredding! The music was amazing and had everyone dancing, and we had so many compliments from our family and friends about how awesome the band sounded. James also went above and beyond during two snafus—one, by keeping us on schedule for our first dance when our event coordinator dropped the ball, and second, by adjusting the setlist on the fly when there was a medical emergency AND then by keeping the mood up—his adaptability and professionalism were huge assets when things went awry. I’m not over-exaggerating when I say our night was perfect in no small part due to James & the amazing band — he was truly the best, and we would recommend him to anyone looking to book a stellar group for their wedding/any other event!!"See more

First off, He has all the skills that you’d expect in any good teacher - patience, professionalism, communication, attentiveness, adaptability, etc. But more importantly, he has an insane level of knowledge and wisdom that I’ve never come across before in any other music teacher (including in professional music schools). The fundamental ideas and techniques that I’ve been learning from him have completely elevated my skill and interest in the guitar, and music in general. I’ve never considered myself particularly musically-inclined, but now I can envision a future where I’m an actual talented, respected bass player (if I practice, of course). To me, he’s a very inspiring teacher and I’m super grateful to have found him."See more

He recommended me which guitar to buy and by the second class I was already playing a few cords. He gave me a pretty challenging song since the beginning, and this has kept me very motivated. Each class he corrects me here and there and gives me enough material to practice all throughout the week until our next class. He is also a hyper professional guitar player so this is very motivating as well. From holding the guitar correctly to playing the strings correctly, etc. The online classes makes guitar learning super accesible too! Greeeeat teacher! But remember, at the end of the day, it all comes to praticing every day even if its only for five mins. Thank you Tim!!!"See more

After placing an ad for a private lessons guitar teacher a couple of months ago, I narrowed my choices down to two potential teachers. James Wengrow was one of the teachers and after meeting him for a free trial first lesson (which he generously offered) there was no doubt in my mind that he was a good fit for me. First of all, James is very professional. I asked for daytime, weekday lessons and he offered me time slots that were in alignment with that request. James arrived on time and prepared to teach. He asked me questions about my musical background, goals for taking lessons, musical preferences, and musical knowledge. He listened carefully to me and responded thoughtfully without any attitude or haughtiness. James is an educated and well trained musician (he studied, played professionally and taught extensively in his home country of Australia before moving to NYC last year), but he never rubs that in your face. He has a lovely humility about him which I believe is part of what makes him, such a good teacher, especially for beginners like myself. However, he is also good at keeping me focused. As a stay at home mom with a toddler, I am grateful for James's style, as he is sort of a gentle task master who is sensitive to the dynamics of a private lesson. He is also great with the more practical aspects of lessons, like communicating, (text, email, phone, etc.) scheduling, etc. So far, I have been very pleased with our lessons. The only thing I wish for is more time to practice!
