Had a new kitchen sink and faucet installed which ended up needing some trimming of the hole in the countertop. The was done with no additional charge for the extra labor time from the quotes. Overall great experience.

If there were extra start's to put on it would be 10 star's for the excellent work that Sam & his worker's did! They took out & installed a new HVAC Central Air Unit for my Mom. Outstanding work! They even cleaned up after they were done. Thank you Guy's for the amazing work you did, my Mom will be able to sleep cool & comfortable after 5 day's in the heat. Truly a satisfied customer.

Marvin went above and beyond, not only tackling the service requested, but explaining how to maintain the improvement after the fact. He was professional, kind and clearly makes his handyman services a labor of love.

Their field labor was very professional, knowledgeable, and worked clean and fast. The office was very disorganized, and seemed that the people that did the pricing and the people that did sales and follow up were not on the same page. My first point of contact had little to no knowledge of the project they priced and he was very slow in returning phone calls

Juan came to my house to repair the front door and and second door once you enter my house. He had to gut out the whole frame and replace them. Juan did a great job. He was reliable and helpful. He even help us look for discounted items. I would definently hire and recommend him To work for others. I love the fact he was honest and his labor price was very affordable.

Roosevelt was very patient and reliable. He ordered a new part for me and when it didn't fix the problem and another new component was needed, he returned to my home and refunded all the money I had paid for the part and labor when it turned out not to be cost effective to repair my old dishwasher. He is a highly ethical, detail oriented repairman you can trust.

Eric installed backsplash tiles in my kitchen, replaced the hood over the oven and installed an OTR microwave. He charged for labor only, as I got him the materials. It was a pleasure working with him. Not only did he complete this job on time with the desired quality, he also did a few small extra stuff for free. Highly recommend for any kitchen and bath remodeling.

Marco came today to do our backsplash for a kitchen remodel. Wow - what a job! He and his partner came on time, were very clean and organized, and did a really wonderful job. I have done many renovations in our house and most contractors I would not have back - Marco is one that I would have back and am happy to endorse his work. Thanks for a great job!

I rarely write reviews. I've hired a lot of folks over past 30 years and Manny ranks among the top two or three. He was clear in communicating, came in at his quote, and did exactly what he was asked using high quality parts (even though he and I had not discussed that and he could have opted for lower cost materials to enrich himself, but that's just not how he operates). He takes pride in his work and his work ethic reflects it. Thx Manny! p.s. a few other plumbers declined the job proposing far more expensive solutions (2-3x as costly) simply because they felt a quick buck was in their best interest. Manny did the hard work taking a couple hours to get a difficult labor intensive job done

The job could not have gone more perfect. My contractor cancelled last minute for a job that needed to be done before Christmas as it was a gift. I hired Al over the phone as I was desperate and he came over right away. I was extremely nervous and worried he may try and over charge due to the circumstances and my need for immediate assistance. He had no reviews for me to read and I have had a few bad experiences with contractors in the past. Al was polite, clean, neat and treated my home as if it was his own sweeping and vacuuming as he went along. I was only planning on having him do the hard labor and I was going to finish the rest on my own. Al was a very pleasant find and I will be referring him to anyone I know who needs a contractor. He did not over charge and went above and beyond to help finish the entire job for me.

I liked that the owner gave me a total price for the project and not a per hour with a huge first hour price of $180+ like the other handymen co’s. The assembly price would be more than the item itself! Since Jeff was honest and didn’t price gauge me he gets to bid on thousands of dollars of other projects I need done ASAP. Great Job!

Brick and cement step repair. Carlos quoted a price that was the most reasonable for materials and labor. He obtained all the necessary materials and began the work as soon as I accepted his quote. He removed all the old broken cement and replaced it with new. He was very thorough and removed all the debris from the project. He took many photos of the work in progress as I was out of town. He gave the cement time to dry and cure. He then returned to check that all went correctly with the job. I would be quick to hire Mura Construction again for my home repair needs.

Late this afternoon, I posted a request for a plumber to fix my gas-fired water heater. I had tried but failed to fix it myself. Within an hour of posting my request, Mr. Karras contacted me. Instead of simply coming out to my house, Mr. Karras talked me through the repair myself. He told me how to wrestle the cover plate off the pilot light and burner assembly and then talked me through the fussy procedure and tricky timing for manually lighting the pilot light with a gas grill ignitor. Woo hoo! Hot water again! Mr. Karras is a saint! Saved us hundreds of dollars for the excellent value of an after-hours repair visit with labor. I asked how I could pay him for his phone consultation, but he refused any payment and wished me a good evening! Moreover, he is patient, well spoken and very knowledgeable. I highly recommend him to anyone needing plumbing or heating services. Great man!

B&B did an expert intake of my needs. They communicated with me promptly by email, in clear, concise English; made helpful suggestions; showed up precisely as promised; did an excellent job; cleaned up after their labors; and thanked me for hiring them. I would do it again without hesitation.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good handyman?

Finding a good handyman can change your life. Within days, the endless list of insurmountable tasks that were either out of your skill range or impossible to fit into your busy schedule can be completed. If you know you want help but aren’t sure how to hire the right pro, ask these questions to find the right fit:

  • What is your work experience? If you are putting in a tile backsplash, you want someone experienced with the task, not someone who generally does painting and junk removal.
  • How much do you charge? Handymen often charge hourly rates that vary based on the complexity of the task they’re hired to do, as well as flat rates for standard jobs. Be clear about what they’ll charge before you hire them.
    • On that note, discuss payment details. It’s wise not to pay all the money up front, especially for larger projects. You may be able to pay a deposit for materials and pay the remainder upon project completion.
  • How long will the job take you to complete? If the handyman is as busy as you are and a fence repair is going to take months, you should probably find another qualified handyman for the job.

Read client reviews and follow up with references to make sure you’re choosing the right handyman for your projects. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

What does a handyman do?

A handyman is a skilled laborer who provides basic home repairs. Anyone can call themselves a handyman, although most who do so are skilled with repairs and home projects. Reading reviews is a good way to determine their fitness for your job. The tasks a handyman can perform include assembling furniture, painting interiors and exteriors, repairing fences, repairing broken doors or replacing trim, hanging lights, hooking up appliances, and much more. Handymen may have flat fees for certain services, or charge an hourly rate. Handyman rates are often lower than those of a contractor, as they don’t have the same specialization. Some states have no limit on the work a handyman can perform, while others do. For example, California’s Building and Professions Code section 7048 (small operations) permits handymen to provide work similar to that of a contractor (floor installation, painting, etc.) provided the total cost of labor and materials does not exceed $500. A handyman is a great resource for minor home repairs at a lower cost than a licensed contractor, but for more complex projects, it pays to hire a specialized contractor. Fore more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much does a handyman charge?

The national average rate for handyman jobs is $90-$160. A handyman performs general maintenance and repairs for residential and commercial properties. A handyman may charge a flat fee for standard services that take a predictable amount of time, such as installing a new appliance, as well as an hourly rate for larger projects such as digging out and replacing a rotted fence post. A cost-saving strategy when hiring a handyman is to bundle all the tasks you want them to do into one visit to make the most of any minimum service fee. Hourly rates for a handyman can average $50-$100 per hour. Pricing will depend on skill and experience required for the job, as well as regional labor rates. Here are a few examples of average handyman flat rates.

  • Attic ladder replacement: $150.
  • Toilet replacement: $75.
  • Ceiling fan and light fixtures: $75.
  • Faucet replacement: $125.
  • Garbage disposal: $75.

Can a handyman do plumbing?

In some states, a handyman can provide plumbing services, but it may be in your best interest to call a plumber, particularly for issues more major than unclogging a drain or attaching a new sink. Hiring a plumber is important because mishandling your water and gas lines has the potential to do great damage to your home, your family’s health, or even the safety of your neighborhood. A handyman is not legally required to have any training or licensing in plumbing matters, while a licensed plumber has undergone years of education and on-the-job training. In some cases, homeowners insurance won’t cover damage caused by plumbing repair done by an unlicensed handyman.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, most plumbers learn their trade through a four- or five-year apprenticeship with 2,000 hours of paid on-the-job training. They also receive classroom education including “safety, local plumbing codes and regulations, and blueprint reading. They also study mathematics, applied physics, and chemistry. After completing an apprenticeship program, plumbers … are considered to be journey workers, qualifying them to perform duties on their own,” according to the DOL. Licensed plumbers should do continuing education to keep abreast of safety and technology changes. Poor plumbing can lead to sewage backups, a flooded home or even natural gas leaks, so it’s best to leave it in the hands of a specialized professional.
