Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Is it better to repair or replace a roof?

It depends on the severity of the damage. If a falling branch or a windstorm damages an isolated patch of shingles, you could probably repair it. However, if the underlayment is damaged or if the whole roof is showing signs of wear, you might need to replace it.

Always have a professional roofer near you assess the roof before making a decision.

Can a handyman repair a roof?

A handyman may be able to repair simpler problems on a roof, such as damaged shingles or gutters. However, it’s important that you hire a pro who’s properly trained and skilled to handle your roof repairs. When in doubt, research the licensing requirements in your state, and review several handymen and roofers before making a decision.

How can I find out if a roofer is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

To find out whether a roofer is an essential service provider during the COVID-19 pandemic, start by visiting your state or city’s government website. Local governments are providing up-to-date information for residents during this time.

A national guideline is available on CISA’s website, Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19. This page addresses 16 different categories of essential infrastructure sectors, but note that not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Is it worth it to hire a roofer?

There are several reasons why it’s worth it to hire a professional roofer instead of attempting it yourself. The first is safety. Roofing is inherently dangerous, as a fall from a roof could seriously injure or kill you. Roofers have specialized equipment and training to help prevent accidents.

Next is experience. Roofers know how to spot problems (leaks, missing shingles, moss or mold growth, etc.)  in your roof that could potentially save you from costly repairs down the road.

And finally, roofers save you time by getting the job done quickly and with a high degree of quality.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a roofer during the COVID-19 pandemic?

Because social distancing is important during the COVID-19 pandemic, it’s recommended that you message roofers after narrowing down your choices through an online search of local roofers near you.

Ask if the roofer is willing to conduct an assessment via video chat rather than a traditional site inspection. Additionally, strategize on what other steps you can collectively take to make sure you’re following guidelines on social distancing during this time, including conducting a virtual payment.

Can I use digital payments to pay for roof installation, replacement or repair?

Digital payment platforms are common among roofers, roof repair companies and other services. The COVID-19 pandemic will likely cause more service providers to adopt platforms like PayPal, Zelle, Google Pay, Square Cash, Venmo and others instead of cash or check to decrease the risk of transmission.

You can typically find out whether roofers accept digital payments on their online profiles, and you should confirm this information with them during a consultation call.

Does a roofer need to enter my home?

Generally, a roofer will likely not need to enter your home. The bulk of the work takes place on and around the edges of the roof, where roofing material meets either dormer walls or other structures. So, there is usually no need for person-to-person contact. However, there might be some cases where a roofer needs to enter your home, perhaps to inspect damage or access electrical outlets.

You can take care of any consultation calls using video chats, photos and emails, and payment should take place on virtual platforms. Put together a strategy with any local roofing professionals you contact.

Do roofers offer remote or virtual services?

To find out the degree to which a roofing service can operate remotely, it’s best to contact local roofers and roofing repair specialists near you.

See if they will schedule a video call so that you can show them the project and get an idea of the cost. This will also allow them to give you recommendations on the type of roofing material, and the best time of year to do the project. You might also be able to book a roof installation or repair service far out in advance.

We found our new go-to roofers. We booked Rock Solid Roofing for a repair. They were extremely responsive, professional and timely with the repair, and did excellent work at a good value. Our roof leak was repaired successfully, with the owner’s promise to help us work through any future issues. Will use them again! Highly recommend!

Stayed in phone contact all week with scheduler for a roof repair. Had an appointment for 330 on a Thursday, take off early from work, and when I pulled up in my driveway, they call. They say that he tried to call me and they aren't coming, but they have software to give me an estimate for a new roof! I told them I need a repair, not a new roof and don't bother!

Eagleye Roofing were absolutely great. They responded back to me within an hour of contacting them about my roof, were out the next day to look at the roof and write out an estimate. Within the next few days the roofers were out to start, and finished in 1 day! Both Mike and Anthony (the two gentleman I was in contact with throughout the process) were both extremely professional and made a great impression. It only took a week from my initial contact with Eagleye to my roof being completed. I would definitely recommend these guys to anyone who needs their roof repaired!

I had an appointment schedule to get an estimate for roof repairs.  I got a call from the lady at the office the day of the appointment stating that they would not be able to make the appointment due to the weather.  I asked when we could reschedule and she says "we won't be able to reschedule because this is a waste of our time and we're busy."  The woman was rude and unprofessional.  I asked her why this was a waste of their time and she claimed that because I have other appointments, that I probably wasn't going to hire them.  I tried to explain that my "other appointments" were for a plumber and electrician (which they don't do) and that I was working several issues simultaneously.  I asked if she would consider rescheduling and she rudely snarked "I'll call the owner and see what he says but we're busy".  As a 21 year veteran, I would recommend that you take your business to a reputable company where it is valued.
