Tree removal and stump grinding

Mary Ann originally came out to quote my trees with a very good price. She then offered a discount if I ordered the service right away. I was very excited because reviews for her company seemed pretty good. We went ahead and moved forward. We had just purchased a foreclosure, so we needed the following done: All trees around the house trimmed away from the house, 3 stumps removed, 1 tree completely removed including stump, left over wood cut to firewood size, 3 stumps removed, and per her suggestion, several of the trees dead wooded. I was excited to come home after hearing that the work had been completed. After coming home, I found the tree had been removed. That was about the extent of what had been actually completed. I suppose the trees may have been dead wooded also, but being that they were all still dormant, I had no way of telling. Last spring I did have to do quite a bit more dead wooding on the trees. If this was the only complaint I had, I would have been happy. I found that only 2 of the 3 stumps had actually been removed. I do think the trees were "trimmed" but by "trimmed" I mean barely touched. The trees were no longer touching the house, but they were maybe a foot off of the house. A good breeze would send them right back into house. The logs that were left were huge. I think the only fire these could be used for would be a bon fire. On top of all of this, when I received the invoice, I was being charged $200 more than agreed upon. I contacted Mary Ann about these concerns and she was very responsive. She assured me I did not have to pay until I was satisfied with the order and would send the guys back out to fix all of their mistakes. In addition, she looked back at my emails and found she originally added the amounts wrong, but would honor the price she gave me. At this point, I was very happy with her response, though wished this could have been done right the first time. The guys did come back out one morning just before my husband and I left for work. On the way out, one of the guys came to me to explain that he recut all of the wood to firewood size of "so big" as he showed me with his hands. He said I shouldn't have any problems fitting that into a firepit or fireplace. I was on my way to work and didn't have time to go look at the pile, but with first glance I was confused. The pile didn't look touched, but maybe they have some tool that has the ability to cut the logs without unstacking the pile? When I got home that afternoon I was happy to see the 3rd stump was removed and the trees were all trimmed much further back. I didn't have the time or effort to unstack this entire wood pile to make sure the wood was actually "firewood size" but took their word for it since they did everything else. I contacted Mary Ann to pay. Now one word of warning: they only accept check. They can't electronically receive any money via Paypal or any other way. So I setup payment through my bank, and a check was on its way to her. I did get contacted from her several times because the check didn't come fast enough to her. In this day and age, you would really think if you want your money fast, you wouldn't rely on a paper check via snail mail. A couple of weeks later, we started moving the logs to the backyard by our firepit. We quickly found that after removing the top layer of logs, nothing had been touched below. Our largest piece is the base of the tree, which looks like a stump still sticking out of the ground with the way they positioned it to hold up the wood pile. They do get smaller from there, but about 3/4 are way too large. Have you ever seen the logs that they sell at the store which they call "bon fire logs"? These logs are at least twice that size. I then contacted Mary Ann again about this. Now I had already paid for my order so there wasn't a lot I could hold over her. I sent many pictures to her of the size, with my foot in the picture to try to show the size of these logs. She apologized to me and assured me they would come back out and cut these logs to firewood size. She asked I be patient since I couldn't burn the wood anytime soon, and they had a lot of jobs lined up. I agreed, we didn't need these cut right away and I again, appreciated her response though again wished I wasn’t going on the 3rd visit to finish the job. Now 4 months later, no one has been back out to touch these logs (and I do mean LOGS.) I emailed Mary Ann once again to ask if this was still going to be taken care of. My response from her was that she came back out today to look, and they all look to be the correct LENGTH to fit into a fireplace. I told my husband about this ridiculous response and he said, "Well I guess if she is only looking at the length then maybe, but definitely not the width!" She now claims, 4 months later, that by "firewood size" they only refer to the length and not the width. They don't split logs and I should be happy because this is all that was promised. Nowhere on the paperwork did it say they don't split logs, cut the logs shorter to make up for the width, etc. These logs will not fit in any sort of fire device to be used as firewood, so I don't know how this fits any definition of firewood size. I guess if you had a very wide tree removed, you should be prepared to only use the "firewood sized" wood as a table, because it would be far too large to use for anything else. I am now left with a pile of large logs that will be incredibly hard to move, let alone try to even think about how to burn these. I wish I could post pictures of these logs so everyone can see what to expect. At this point I am left with only one choice, to hire another company to come out and do what this company was supposed to do in the first place. No part of this experience was pleasant, I won't be back, and I definitely would not recommend this company to anyone.
Merriman Tree & Stump's reply
Erica, You have my sincere regrets that you are unhappy. However, not one tree care service in this city "cut logs into firewood length" and includes splitting them. My proposal to you does not mention splitting logs, because we do not do that. You are the only person who has brought this to my attention in all of the years I have been doing this. My crew and I succeeded in meeting the list of tasks to perform there without any damage and in a timely manner. Erica, and we do our best to meet all of your needs/expectations. I beg you to call as many local tree services as you wish and before you go into a story, ask them if "cutting into firewood length" includes splitting your logs. No one does. We take care of the technical and difficult tasks. We have many, many, many happy customers because we have effectively met our agreement. Erica, you can rent a log splitter and then your wood will be ready to go. That's what people who want to use the firewood typically do. Obviously resentment and anger are not going to get us to a peaceful place, so I am willing to work through this with you...............

I consider Merriman Tree and Stump the best tree service company in the city! They have done work for us a number of times, and it was all excellent, done on time as promised and at a most reasonable price. Their crews are courteous, diligent, utterly professional, and their equipment is top notch. They recently removed a large dead maple tree from our front yard: 50-feet tall and 4-feet wide at the trunk. Using a high-lift they cut down the tree, ground the stump and removed all debris in about a half day. Mary Ann is an honorable lady and her word is her bond! I cannot over-emphasize the quality and integrity of this company. I highly recommend them with no reservations. They are the best!

Just pulled up to my house and took a walk around the yard and I have to say I cannot remember a time where I have been more pleased with a contractor. Your people did a wonderful job. The cleanup was superb. I can barely tell they were here except for the saw dust. It looks better than any expectation I had. I swear I think even the trees were smiling. Everything looks so open and yet not butchered. I'm sure the trees are much happier with their new "summer cut". Thank you for the great job, your excellent communication, and your fair pricing. I will be sure to share your name and number with everyone who inquires. Much success in the future. You have certainly earned it.

FAQs

  • What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?

All jobs are different and often customers get prices that are far higher or far lower than ours. I think we are typically in the middle, but that isn't just my business, it's everyone I know who runs a tree service. So many factors go into the scope of our work that it is sometimes challenging to give quality service at the cheapest price. I always tell our customers we will negotiate if it's an apples to apples comparison. My point really is that we aren't out to rip anyone off, all of the work is seen through different eyes/different viewpoint and you get what you pay for.

  • What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

Consider this, if you get a quote from someone coming from another area code, you might wonder why they have had to travel so far to give you that very low quote. Perhaps it's because they have built a bad reputation where they have come from and now they are knocking on your door, selling you their services and then it is likely they are going to leave you with a mess!

  • What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?

Our goal is to provide safe and proper tree care resulting in 100% customer satisfaction while at the same time giving back to U.S. Veterans and Wildlife! This small business was born out of local need for excellent, professional tree care. We have been fulfilling that need for several years now. During the course of those years, I have raised several wildlife species due to their loss of home (trees) and/or abandonment. In addition, I am a U.S. Army Veteran of Desert Shield/Storm and our goal is to give back to my fellow veterans. My first choice for workers is to hire “Vets!”
