Jim was fantastic! He installed a sink in the laundry room in the best possible way. This required a more challenging approach since it involved going into the wall and then down to basement. The end result is a top notch professional install that looks and functions flawlessly. He is definitely willing to go above and beyond and "do it right". A pleasure to work with, I highly recommend him to anyone looking for quality workmanship and just all around genuine sweet guy. 👍🏼😃

I had Craig finish about half our basement. The job included framing, electrical, HVAC, drywall, paint and finish work (all but plumbing). He was quick to respond with an estimate, started working on plans and permits immediately and kept at the job the entire time. I was informed of progress and next steps throughout the process. He remained flexible and provided good suggestions. Price was competitive with other contractors and quality was top notch. I would definitely hire him for another job and recommend him to others.

I hired Walkers Quality Drywall to finish a 1200 square foot basement in Dublin, OH. The price was very reasonable and the work was top notch. Shane and his crew worked hard and fast from start to finish to meet our deadline. Hanging, finishing sanding and stomping the ceiling only took them about 8 days. I would highly recommend this company for all your drywall needs. They are true professional.

We had a flood in our basement and had to replace the entire living area. We had Mark install new drywall ceiling and walls, update the electric, new entrance to bathroom and total refinish of that room, new carpet installed and vintage fireplace mantel installed over existing fireplace. Very happy with results and completed in about 3 and half weeks. It is total makeover, and we will be able to enjoy it for many years to come.

Mr. Favret and his crew arrived on time and called beforehand. They arrived at my house to move items from a bedroom and basement to a garage and back to the basement. They were amazing, friendly, efficient , extremely reasonably priced, went over and above my expectations. I have already booked two more projects with them!

Scott is AMAZING! A true craftsman in every sense of the word. His attention to detail and the quality of his work is second to none. Working with him was the best part of our basement project. He designed, built and installed a GREAT oak built-in entertainment center in our basement that allows adjustment for a larger tv, provides plenty of storage for our kids' games and toys and conceals our sump pump and gas & water shut off valves. We went with oak as it will stand up better to wear and tear from our kids. He also built 2 doors, installed all of our trim and casings and installed a stair rail. One of the doors was an uncommon size for room with a low ceiling and it matches all the other doors in our house. He stained everything to match the existing doors and trim in our house and nailed it. Scott is a hard and diligent worker. He doesn't mess around, goes straight to work and focuses on the job. He knows his craft and it shows in the work he does and his attention to detail. We couldn't be more thrilled with how everything turned out and are already planning our next project with Scott.

He finished our basement, removed hanging cabinets and reinstalled out in our garage. He replaced our countertop, added new in-wall lights and back-splash. He was fantastic. 100%. Curt's prices were beyond reasonable. He knew we were on a tight/fixed budget and worked with us on options and creative ideas to make our space beautiful with out paying an arm/leg. We ended up having two lists. A must list and a wish list. If he found ways to nip and tuck on certain aspects he would tell us he could take on a wish list item. It was very fair. Regarding his work/professionalism, he always kept us in the loop, would take a few minutes every few days to give us an update. He was very professional, strong work ethic and very skilled in his craft. On top of all of this, he was tidy and left the house cleaner than before. Every day. We were blessed to find Curt and have recommended him to all our friends. :)

The pipes under my kitchen sink were leaking as well as the drain in the right side. The toilet was leaking and I had a clogged drain in the basement. The kitchen and bath jobs are complete 100% satisfaction. The basement drain however will need a specialist. Of course Mike had no way of knowing how bad it was until 5 hours later when he hadn't made any progress with it, but he sure tried his damnedest! Mike was very professional and efficient. He even gave me some tips and taught me some basics. I will use Decorators Choice in the future if the need arises.

We had DS redo our unfinished half basement space. It was a particularly difficult space to do as the furnace, hot water heater, craw space and storage shelves needed enclosed but maintain full access. The ceiling required 2 soffits in order to maintain height and one wall an angle to save floor space. It was their design ideas that we liked over their competiters right away and the workmanship was spot on.

When Centex built our home in 2003, they went cheap and instead of using a pipe that fit, they soldered extensively behind the wall to our shower to make the pipes fit. When we went to replace the leaking shower head, we found this issue. The soldering had broke and needed to be repaired. We hired, after hiring several other contractors, Blessed, to come fix the issue. I corresponded with April, the owner, and arranged for the service. Bill called about 30 minutes out and arrived on time. I showed the Bill the problem, and he immediately knew what was the issue and how to fix it. I am currently on crutches so I was hesitant as I could not get in and out of the basement to turn off the water. Not needed. Bill was able to remove the old soldering, install a coupling, etc - and do all that plumbing stuff that I have no clue how to do. Long story short, he was done in about an hour and the cost was $25 less than he had quoted. He advised what small items we needed to do ourselves (he could have, but I asked if we could finish this part) to get the shower working - install face plate, and handle, etc. Note, others had given me estimates of a low of $500 up to over $1K. We found Blessed Plumbing also on the Blue Pages (Christian yellow pages) and were very confident with his work. He even gave some other suggestions on issues we were having (water hammer) and offered some maintenance advice on our aging sump pump. I enjoyed my encounter with this company and would not hesitate to call on them again for any plumbing problem we encounter. It is hard and rare to find honest people/contractors.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

    What do general contractors charge?

If you’re doing a home remodel, building a new home or embarking on a commercial building project, you’ll hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to oversee and execute construction projects. Each construction project is unique; even two duplicate homes built on lots next door to each other could have different construction costs due to factors like different excavation costs when building the foundation. Since each project is unique, many general contractors make bids on potential construction projects. These bids can then break down to a per square foot cost that encompasses the labor of all the workers needed for the job, materials, the scope of work, and any equipment needed. Materials and finishes make a major difference in your cost per square foot. For example, choosing standard kitchen tiles at $3 per square foot will result in a lower total project cost than imported marble tiles that cost $63 per square foot. Where you live will also affect how much general contractors charge, as labor and the cost to do business can cost less in many regions than in high-cost areas like New York or San Francisco. Here are some examples of average costs general contractors typically charge in various regions:

    • Home addition in San Francisco: $250-$270 per square foot.
    • New home construction in Knoxville, Tennessee: $100-$200 per square foot.
    • Kitchen remodel in Tennessee: $40-$80 per square foot, depending on finishes.
    • Bathroom remodel in Vancouver, Washington: $110-$170 per square foot.

Be sure to check out our smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.
