Overall, I had a good experience with Choice Home Assistance. He provided a great price for the work I needed done compared to other companies I talked with. It started off a little iffy for me. He was over an hour late on our first consultation and not as punctual for our second. The communication wasn't quite to my preference at first but improved. I'm being a little nit picky there. He did great work on my siding repair project. I'd recommend an inquiry into what he can do for your project.

Jesse and Tyler did a fantastic job on my bathroom remodel. They were great with communication, respectful of my home and property during demo and building, and they worked extremely hard. Never taking shortcuts or the easy way out. They took pride in their work, and even had some phenomenal suggestions on style and décor, based on my preferences. They always willingly worked around my crazy work schedule over a period of many weeks. They made me feel like I was their only customer, and on top of all of this, they were stand-up, friendly guys to work with through this whole process. When I am ready to do more work in my home, they will be my first choice!

We had a great experience with Summit Building & Roofing. The Project Manager David worked with my insurance company to get my roof replaced when they initially only wanted to cover half of it. Great job!

Daniel's professionalism, expertise and good humor made my experience of completely renovating my nightmare of a basement into a beautiful and welcoming addition to my home. His skills and desire to make even the smallest detail one of perfection far exceeded any expectations or any concerns I may have had prior to beginning this large project. This space in my home, built in 1948, is now a true showplace for entertaining and relaxing. Daniel's initial estimate did not waver, even though many issues arose due to the age of my home and unexpected problems that were revealed during the work process. His cost was very fair compared to other estimates. Most importantly, his superior workmanship and the finished project has created a beautiful space of the finest workmanship. I highly encourage you to consider Daniel if you are in need of a highly skilled professional who takes pride in his work. Ten star tribute to Daniel !!!

Steve was awesome. He was professional, clean, quick, and cost efficient. He also scheduled me an appointment at last minutes notice (something that is VERY uncommon with other plumbers). I definitely recommend his services to others, as I will be using him again for future projects.

We had several things needing done outside our home due to a wicked hail storm. We had a lot of anxiety about working with our insurance company because they said they would only cover the cost of replacing half our roof :/ We got in contact with ACI and we are glad we did. Brian worked with our insurance and got the other half of the roof and some other unexpected things covered. I feel like he is a wizard when dealing with insurance companies. The jobs they did were very good. We are extremely happy with the job they did replacing our garage door! The only thing we were a bit frustrated with was the work ethic of the siding guys. They would show up and take a very long time getting started and they did a lot of standing around. The job they did was good, not great. Brian addressed this with them and we don't know what came of that, but that's not our business. Anyway, Brian is easy to work with and a friendly, professional gentleman. We had our house and garage roof replaced, gutters on the house replaced, garage door replaced, an awning replaced, house siding replaced and some other smaller projects all of which we are ultimately happy with :)

I requested Drywall estimate for a ceiling removal in the kitchen (old drop ceiling with the plastic sheets for Florescent lighting ) . Kelsha responded quickly and personnaly showed up to introduce himself. I quickly realized Kelsha was more than just drywall contractor. His work and helper were there when they said and performed perfect in removal of many parts of the home I was remodeling. We did total bathroom remodel as well as walls removed throughout the home. They cleaned up everyday they were on the job and never had to question anything. Kelsha was so talented in Finished Trim, Drywall, and general construction all the stress of the multiple projects in the home Kelsha performed always in a professional way. Always was the early man on the job and kept in touch thruout with other trades to cordinate the work load . Kelsha would constantly call to inform me of progress and what I needed to purchase to keep the flow moving forward. I forgot to mention his ability in framing walls whenever needed which I found myself needing during the remodel. We added and removed multiple walls and Kelsha finish work made them all look as if they never happened. I strongly recommend Kelsha Speedlimit Construction for all your drywall , framing and finish Carpentry jobs. Small or large you will be happy with Kelsha on the job.

Alan was our service technician who we hired to patch a couple spots in the ceiling that had been water damaged. We also hired him to do some plumbing work while he was here. Alan did a great job and we are totally satisfied. He went over and above our expectations in quality and was constantly making sure that we were satisfied. Alan took the time to discuss the project work in detail so we knew exactly what was being done. He even showed me a few things that will help me with other future projects. The costs were very reasonable and I even got a military discount on top!! We will definitely hire Alan for future projects. I highly recommend him and this company.

I had the pleasure of using these guys while remodeling our house down there. We had a full time company doing the floors and bathroom, and needed somebody to help with some other odds and ends since we were working too. They came to the rescue.

I have used built-2-last remodeling for several home projects and have always been thrilled with the results. At my previous home I had my basement completely finished. The cost was very reasonable compared to other estimates and the work was phenomenal. I have small children so he made sure that every corner and edge was rounded for safety. I showed him some pictures of ideas I had for storage and he created beautiful built in shelves and cabinets that utilized the space perfectly to provide as much storage as possible in my small home while still looking elegant. Every detail and finish was pristine. The basement was turned into an amazing family space that far exceeded my expectations and we constantly received compliments on how nice it was. I also recently had the interior of my new home painted and a beautiful window seat with storage created in my family room. Again every little detail was tended to and the results were wonderful.

I worked with Matt and his team to complete a project at our rental property. They replaced the tile flooring, painted and repaired the tub faucet. Their service was impeccable from start to finish. The estimate was thorough and precise, workmanship meticulous, and communication throughout the entire process was reliable and responsive.

Martin-N-Jones LLC is a young, up and coming company. They were very professional, and provided updates each day, as construction progressed. They are hard working, and bent over backwards to build our fence, the way we wanted. We will use them again, Thank you to Martin-N-Jones, for a job well done!!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do construction project managers do?

Construction project managers help in all stages of your construction project, starting from the very first step. Typically paid a percentage of a total project cost, they are part of the design and planning process and help ensure seamless communication between the design parties and the construction team. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, their scope of work includes preparing cost estimates, budgets and work timetables; interpreting and explaining contracts and technical information to other professionals; reporting work progress and budget to clients; collaborating with architects, engineers and other construction pros; selecting subcontractors and scheduling and coordinating their tasks; responding to work delays, emergencies and other problems; and ensuring compliance with legal requirements, building and safety codes, and other regulations.

The work of construction project managers may seem very similar to that of general contractors, but there are some critical differences. One difference is that, unlike most general contractors, project managers are not engaged in the actual construction — they are onsite overseeing the work of subcontractors. Another key difference is that project managers are hired during the design phase, while general contractors are hired after plans have been made. The project manager is generally paid a percentage of the total project cost, while the general contractor is more typically paid according to the bid they gave to build your project.

What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

How do I find out if a contractor is licensed?

It’s important to know if your project requires work by a licensed professional, as licensing laws can vary by state, locality, and job details. You can find general licensing information online at the government websites that handle occupational licensing for a given profession in your state or location. Some states designate a project cost over which you have to hire a licensed contractor. To find qualified licensed contractors, search your state’s licensing board. For example, in California, the Department of Consumer Affairs operates a searchable database through the Contractors State License Board. In some states, contracting licenses are provided at a regional level. You can find links to specific databases on BRB Publications’ Occupational Licensing page. Red flags that a contractor may not be licensed or may be providing an expired or false license number are unreasonably low bids or a request for complete payment upfront. How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.
