Manny did an excellent job! Being a stay at home mom with two toddlers and having a husband who works long days, Manny saved us a lot of time amd effort on our bathroom remodel. We supplied the materials and he did all the hard work of tiling our shower and bathroom floor. He even installed the backer board on the shower walls for us. While doing the job, he would provide suggestions for grout color, shower niche layout, and protective sealant for the shower once it cured. I would recommend him to friends.

Danny and crew, came in and did a great job with my basement remodel project. Originally I hired another contractor but wasn't happy with the work and then contacted Danny, who gave me a good quote and the updated finishing touches for my project. My basement looks very nice. I recommend Danny for basement remodeling.

We originally hired Kelsha Flavigny to help repair some ceiling damage after our roof leaked, but he did such an amazing job that we asked him to complete a few other jobs -ranging from building a custom window seat to an entire bathroom remodel. Kelsha is a fantastic contractor. He shows up on time, cleans up the work area each day, and does excellent work. His pricing is fair and reasonable. In fact, we gave him more than what he asked because we thought he didn't charge enough for the amount and quality of work he performed. You can tell he is detail oriented and truly cares about the quality of his work. It's hard to find a contractor that excels in everything you need - but trust us, he will exceed your expectations. He's great with woodwork, flooring, lighting/electrical, drywall, plumbing and has the eye of an artist when it comes to designing custom spaces. He even helped us pick out paint colors for our walls and built-ins. I highly recommend Kelsha and his work.

I am a single female on a tight budget who knows very little about home repairs/remodeling. I am wary of being "taken" due to this, and thus have put off my kitchen "redo" for several years. Paul and his assistant, his granddaughter, have been outstanding. They have been punctual, communicative, offered suggestions, and come in under budget. They have also been quite patient when I have added a couple of things or changed course mid-way (glad they aren't reviewing me as a customer :). To top if off, they are positive and enjoyable to be around. My refaced cabinets look great and my backsplash and new range hood go in next week. I can't wait to see the final results!

I am 14 year contractor from florida and was able to find Alan for a kitchen remodel in Gahanna, on thumbtack. He was awesome, hard working, polite, money conscience, very detailed, and honest. He worked late most days but his number one trait was he wants to do it right! This is a hard character to find nowadays. I would refer him to anyone and will be contract his services again. We had a Conversation on one small thing he needs to work on from a professional view, this set him above the rest! Alan was hired to patch and repair alot of drywall but he performed other tasks above and beyond.

Chris and Patrick were both helpful and knowledgeable guys, both friendly and professional. After getting quotes from other companies, I was very impressed by the speed of response from Chris, and his willingness to work around our schedule and availability. Had a quote for labor within 24 hours. They explained everything that needed to be done for what we wanted on our bathroom remodel, what supplies would be needed and how long it should take. Very happy with the results, these guys are straight-forward and easy to work with.

Xclusive Homes was first to respond to my request for a quote for a multiple remodel project including tiling, crown moulding, new bath faucets, and numerous additional jobs that were added as we went. Xclusive Homes was timely, worked tediously and long hours to complete our job by our move in deadline. We are hiring him back to do a shower remodel. Very detail oriented, professional and kind. Highly recommend!

I hired Greg with “If I had a Hammer” back in November 2016 for a complete bathroom remodel, new siding, new electrical and plumbing and several other renovation needs for a bank owned home I purchased. I tried to get multiple bids from different contractors that specialized in different work that was required but Greg was the only contractor that assured me his company could handle all of my project needs in one bid. I had a strict budget and only expected to get the essentials handled because I knew the cost of each project. Not only did Greg go above and beyond on the bathroom remodel but he did so many extra tasks around the home that completely brought my house together. He literally treated my home as if it was his (a lot of contractors will say they will do this but HE actually did). I have to tell this one example because I think it says so much about what kind of contractor & person he is. I had to have a mold remediation specialist come in for mold in my basement/garage (the only other contractor that I used) and I was unable to oversee their work due to other obligations. Greg came to the house to check on the job and saw that they were doing an extremely poor job. He took pictures of their work and sent it to me. This was a huge deal because I would never have second guessed the remediation myself since I was unfamiliar with it. I asked them to come back and asked Greg if he would oversee it for me. My basement is beautiful and entirely clear of mold because of his efforts. I highly recommend “If I had a Hammer” for all of your project needs. Greg himself is a man of few words lol so don’t let that throw you off, BUT I can promise you he is trustworthy, hardworking and genuinely loves to doing the work that he does – which is a rarity. You will NOT regret hiring him.

Mark is the best! He came out right away, assessed the job and went straight to getting the job completed. I have never worked with such a polite, honest, reliable person. I wasn't sure what would happen by going on this site to find someone, and wasn't sure how interested in my small job. Mark made me feel that making sure I got a new mailbox was just as important to him as if I was having remodel the kitchen. Thank you Mark for a wonder job and a very fair price! Joy

Dave and his team did an excellent job completing home repairs and bathroom remodeling in our home. They replaced a water heater, updated plumbing, leveled and rebuilt an 85-year-old floor, tiled, and moved electrical outlets. They offered honest pricing and managed time efficiently.

Mitch hits all the marks with his service. I called him early on a Monday morning and he was able to get to the project right away. He showed up when he said he would be there and gave me a very reasonable quote. Even though it took him longer than anticipated due to a few curve balls I threw at him, he stuck to the quote. I highly recommend him for his good work and his ethic. He’s methodical and thinks things thru. This was a front door replacement job.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Where should I start when remodeling a bathroom?

Bathroom remodeling doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Before starting a bathroom remodel it’s crucial to know what you want and have a clear understanding of your maximum budget. If you’d love all marble fixtures but have $3,000 total, you will have to compromise. Being realistic about materials and money before you even contact a contractor will have you on the road to success. Here are some simple steps to follow in the planning stages of bathroom remodeling:

  • List your remodeling priorities in order of importance (e.g., 1. New shower head, 2. Replace flooring, 3. Install recessed lighting, etc.).
  • Calculate what you can realistically afford to spend on your bathroom remodel. Identify an “all in” price — meaning the absolute maximum you’re willing to pay, as well as what you’d prefer to spend.
  • Gather ideas from Pinterest about colors and finishes.
  • Research the costs of the materials and finishes you want and begin making choices about what is and isn’t possible to fit into your budget (once labor is included). If you’d like to stay under $10,000 total, but really love a $2,000 tub, plan to downgrade in other areas.
  • Request quotes from at least three reputable general contractors, share your vision and ideal materials, and work together from there.

How do I plan a bathroom remodeling project?

If you’re stumped on how to plan a bathroom remodeling project, it pays to hire a designer. This is especially important if you’re changing your bathroom layout in any way. Designers create contractor-friendly drawings indicating exactly where each tile and fixture will be installed, down to the light switches. This investment might cost you $300-$500 but save you significant frustration and miscommunication, while ensuring you get precisely what you want.

If you’re going to do your own design, planning a bathroom remodeling project means being organized and planning ahead. Create a general outline of what you want and the budget you have. Identify the specific fixtures, tiles, paint and vanity you prefer. Get all this organized before requesting quotes from two to three reputable general contractors. Once you find the right pro, get a written contract outlining scope of work, materials that will be used, timeframe and payment schedule. Communicate clearly about when to order your materials so they are ready and waiting by the time the contractor gets the permits. Your job from here is to communicate clearly, pay the contractor as the work progresses, and enjoy your remodel when it’s done.

How long should a bathroom remodel take?

With proper planning and a good general contractor, your bathroom remodeling project doesn’t have to take forever. The construction phase of the project will always vary based on your scope of work, the square footage and the condition of your bathroom under the surface layer. Inevitably an 80-square-foot master bathroom with major changes will take longer than a 25-square-foot guest bath undergoing a minor renovation. For a smaller bathroom, a facelift — the industry term for sprucing up the surface layer (such as paint, vanity, tiles or light fixtures) but keeping the existing footprint of the space — may take five to eight working days, as long as there are no surprises like mold waiting when the old vanity comes out. A more complex bathroom remodel that revamps the shower area (customizing the plumbing, installing tile and changing the shower door), updates the flooring and cabinetry, and adds new paint and new lighting could take anywhere from one week to three weeks. A full bathroom remodel that guts the room, changing the footprint and moving the electrical wiring and plumbing lines, could take four to eight weeks or more. To keep your bathroom remodel on schedule, have your materials ordered and waiting, and don’t make any change orders once construction begins. Planning is key to keeping a bathroom remodel on schedule.

How much does it cost to remodel a bathroom?

Nationally, the average cost of bathroom remodeling is $14,000. Bathroom remodels can vary widely, from standard makeovers to luxurious master bathroom revamps. The factors that affect your bathroom remodeling cost are the finishes you choose (marble tiles can cost 20 times as much as standard subway tiles), the square footage of the project, regional labor rates in your area and the scope of work. Changing the layout or size of the bathroom will also raise costs. Moving electrical wiring and plumbing lines will also dramatically increase costs, as you’ll need to hire plumbers and electricians to handle the work. What’s happening behind your walls and under your floor will also affect bathroom remodeling cost: Rot, damage or mold can lead to additional work and charges. Overall, bathroom remodeling may offer great return on investment and also improve your daily life. Here are some examples of average bathroom remodeling costs:

  • 6-foot by 6-foot bathroom remodel: $3,500, including labor and materials.
  • Standard renovation: $6,500-$10,000. Price includes labor and materials the customer has purchased. Labor may include taking out the shower and shower pan, installing new shower pan and shower, and installing new door, new vanity, new mirror, new bathroom fan, and all new fixtures.
    • Price variation depends on the quality of the finishes.
  • 10-foot by 6-foot bathroom remodel: $7,200, including labor and materials.
  • Mid-range renovation: $12,000-$15,000. Price includes labor and materials the customer has purchased.
  • Upscale renovation: $35,000 and up. Price includes labor and materials. Items might include digital displays for fixtures, multiple shower heads and custom showers.

Who remodels bathrooms?

The professional best equipped to handle bathroom remodeling is a general contractor. A general contractor is typically licensed by the state or region in which they work to carry out home remodeling projects. To receive licensing, they must generally demonstrate their knowledge of construction and building and safety codes. General contractors act as the organizer for the entire bathroom remodeling project, ensuring that each element (new tile, shower pan replacement, lighting installation, etc.) is completed at the appropriate time by the proper contractor. Before hiring a general contractor, it’s wise to do your research. In addition to getting several competitive bids, here are questions to ask:

  • May I see before-and-after photos of some of your recent bathroom remodels?
  • Will I need permits for this project? Do you apply for those?
  • May I see proof of insurance and licenses?
  • Can we have a written contract outlining scope of work, budget and timeline?
  • Will you be here each day overseeing the work?
