Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a mover during the COVID-19 pandemic?

If you’re trying to set up a consultation or an appointment with a mover during the COVID-19 pandemic, make sure to use digital tools to avoid exposure. When searching for movers online, ask if they’d be willing to do a video chat to assess the size of your move. This will be in place of the typical “walk-through” they perform, and they may be able to give you a price quote. You can also discuss safe strategies for completing the job during your call or video chat.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire a mover when social distancing?

If you decide to hire a mover, consider making adjustments to accommodate current guidelines. This may involve staying outside while the mover works inside your home or letting the mover handle only parts of the move.

It’s important to follow social distancing guidelines while performing any service work. For example, do not make physical contact with the movers, maintain at least 6 feet of distance between you at all times, and use digital payments instead of cash or a check.

Does a mover need to enter my home?

A mover will likely need to enter your home -- unless you’ve placed all of your belongings outside beforehand. To stay safe during the COVID-19 pandemic, you might to consider keeping all (or most) of the work outside and/or having at-risk individuals leave the house while the movers work.

You can minimize exposure by doing a preliminary walk-through by video call instead of in person. Discuss your options with the top movers near you before hiring one.

Do movers offer remote or virtual services?

Movers generally need to be present to do their job. But if you come across a mover’s profile that states they’re offering remote services, you can contact them to see what those services include.

How can I find out if a mover is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Your local city or state’s government website is a great resource if you’re trying to figure out whether a mover is considered an essential service provider during the COVID-19 pandemic.

For a source of national guidelines, visit the CISA website’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19. On this page, you’ll find 16 categories of critical infrastructure sectors. But note that some -- not all --  jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Can I use digital payments to pay for moving services?

Most local moving companies are likely to accept some form of digital payment. Particularly with the COVID-19 pandemic, more companies are likely to conduct transactions through platforms like PayPal, Zelle, Square Cash, Venmo, Google Pay and more.

To ensure the mover accepts a platform you can use, you can peruse the mover’s online profile and see what is listed there. You can also ask the mover about payment policies during a consultation call.

What is considered a local move vs. a long-distance move?

Local moves are among the most common moves. Unlike a long-distance move, a local move is typically less than 50 miles and does not cross state lines. Generally, a local move only takes one day, and movers tend to charge by the hour.

The definition of a long-distance move may vary depending on the moving company. Generally, a long-distance considered to be any move of 400 miles or more. However, some say a long-distance move is over 50-100 miles.

Local Move

A move under 50 miles

Long-Distance Move

A move over 50-100 miles or over 400 miles; may also be called an “interstate move” or “out-of-state move”

Out-of-State Move

A move that crosses state lines; may also be called an “interstate move” or “long-distance move”

Interstate Move

A move that crosses state lines; may also be called an “out-of-state move” or “long-distance move”

Intrastate Move

A move that begins and ends in the same state, typically beyond 50 miles

Interstate moves require additional legal preparation and will incur additional costs for distance, the amount and weight of your items, the preparation required and various other factors. Moving companies tend to do an initial weighing of the truck, which you should be present for.

A move that crosses state lines is considered an interstate move or an out-of-state move. Contrast this with an intrastate move, which begins and ends in the same state, but is typically above 50 miles.

To determine whether your move is local or long-distance, contact the best movers in your area.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

How much do you tip movers?

It’s recommended that you tip your movers individually around $4 to $5 per hour. For example, if a team of four movers spends a half-day (four hours) on your move, tip each mover $20. Or, some people tip 5% to 10% of their total bill for small moves and 15% to 20% for larger moves.

If you’re moving across state lines, you may hire different crews to load and unload your goods. In that case, divide the tips between both crews. It’s also a good rule of thumb to add a bit extra for tipping movers if you have special circumstances that have made the move harder, like a spiral staircase or an exceptionally heavy sofa.

Can you move furniture by yourself?

You might be able to move smaller items like nightstands, small desks, chairs and small tables by yourself. However, it’s best to get a professional mover near you to move larger items such as couches, dressers, armoires and televisions.

If you do decide to move furniture by yourself, carefully lift and lower items and take your time.

They said to choose 3 qualities but that was unfair. These guys nailed every aspect of this move! Professional yet personable, very protective of the items they moved. They did not price gouge nor try to make this move any longer than it took! I really wondered about that one, because so many others have a 3 hour minimum and this move took 2 hours. I am always amazed at young people that have their own business and that are as conscientious and as business minded as this young man is! Absolutely will use them for any future moves and I will recommend them to anybody!

The communication with me was excellent. They had a cancellation and was able to move me up in their schedule. They arrived a little early and went straight to work moving furniture out of my basement to the garage. They were polite and professional and took great care in my handling my stuff. I would recommend them to anyone looking to have stuff moved. Very reasonable on price.

My husband and I just moved into our first house and Eko Movers sent a polite and efficient team to unload a 16' storage POD. I don't know what we would have done without them.

They are great for small in town moves. But the trailer + pickup truck combo was not big enough for the three bedrooms we were moving, so we had to make two trips. It wasn't the end of the world, it just would have been more convenient to do it in one trip. Griffin and Evan were very professional and hardworking, although they were 20 minutes late. I would definitely recommend them for small moves, like 1 bedroom moves unless you are okay with multiple trips. Their hourly rate was unbeatable though, so in the end it was more than worth it.

The movers did a great job and were very efficient, creative and professional. We had a last minute addition to the move which they gladly took care of. When they ran into obstacles they creatively problem solved to complete the job. I would recommend!

I was pleasantly surprised that EkoMovers turned out to be such a great choice for our move. DeMarcus, DeShaun and Marcus were a wonderful crew -- courteous, communicative, and professional. They were self-starters who jumped in immediately upon arriving. If they had to take apart anything to move, they put it right back together at our destination. Everything was in great shape.

Hired to move me at a specific time. Got a text that they were "on the way" right at the time they should have been pulling into my driveway. 50 minutes later I texted asking where they were. Answered 35 minutes out. So.... I had to cancel and change my afternoon of plans. They would have been 90 minutes late with no notice. They may have been great movers, but I can only review what my experience was. No experience....

I highly recommend Eko Movers as a local moving service in the Dayton Metro! We found them through Thumbtack, and were immediately impressed with how easy it was to stay in contact with them, as they answer emails incredibly fast! Though their estimate was the second highest of five estimates we received, theirs and one other were the only ones who offered a guaranteed flat rate that wouldn't change as the move progressed. To us, that was worth it's weight in gold, as we could not afford to not know how much the move would cost ahead of time! On this basis, along with the fact that they were flexible on days and ok with last minute changes if they happened, we hired them feeling confident we had made a smart choice. We also liked their focus on environmental care, and enjoyed hearing how they plant a tree for every completed move! Their movers do not smoke on the job, which I really appreciated as someone with sensitivities to smoke. They arrived the day of the move severely understaffed for reasons I believe to be out of their control, and due to this, the move ended up going quite late both days. The real mark of a great business though, is not that they do not make mistakes (we're ALL human after all!) but how they react to mistakes. That really says a lot about a person, a business, you name it. Eko Movers somehow kept finding more movers to bring out as the day went on, both days, and the same thing with trucks. One by one, more showed up. The most impressive thing was that they kept on working and working, tirelessly, until the wee hours of the night to get the job done on time! I was thankful for that, very very thankful, as I had to clean the house we were moving out of the next days, and needed that time to be there. If I had any constructive criticism to give, I would say that some boxes (only a few really, it was from one particular closet) containing delicate things were not quite packed the way I would have wanted them packed (lacked separation and padding) however, the only thing that was broken in my whole move was a picnic basket that wasn't protected in the truck completely unrelated. They got the job done right, their way, and nothing else was damaged except for a little gash in my front door of the new house. They offered to fix the front door gash and replace the picnic basket, no hassle at all. I haven't taken them up on it, I hardly notice it. It's really small beans compared to all the other moves we've completed in the last decade where huge amounts of things were broken everywhere! The last thing I will add, is that going into this I did not realize that it was customary to provide a tip of about $20 per person, per day. With the multitude of packers/movers being brought in all throughout the day up to the last minutes both days, it made it really expensive and confusing to figure out how to tip everyone, necessitating runs back and forth to the atm for more money as more people would show up unexpectedly. It was hard to decide if tipping one person $20 for working all day and another the same for showing up in the last moments was fair or the right way to do it, but in the end we opted to just treat everyone fully and equal, to make sure they all felt valued and appreciated. We wished we would have known ahead of time how many people were coming, and what we should give them to take proper care of them! It was one of those things that we had to really think out, having never done this before, in the middle of a stressful busy time, but we are glad we did. We also ended up buying them lunch (second day only) and providing drinks and snacks both days. I fear they would have starved had we not! They certainly deserved it, they worked their tails off and were very, very polite! Just adding that to prospective clients, so if you were like me and didn't know, you know now and can plan for it better than we did. :) It's a hard job to do, after all! You've got to take good care of them! They are moving your life, after all. It's a precious relationship, if you think about it. I would not hesitate to use EkoMovers again. They got the job done at a predictable price we could afford and virtually no damage except for the afore mentioned. No surprises in the final bill minus the gratuity thing which easily ran a couple hundred more but was well earned and freely given. The only thing I'd love now is a copy of our contract and receipt since they didn't have one on hand for us when they came out. I wasn't sure if they would mail it or if I had to request it. I'll go ahead and request it in the coming days. They were so accommodating, if I had mentioned that I really needed it the last day of work, they would have found a way to get it to me I'm sure. They really took awesome care of us, in every way possible. In conclusion, I think Eko Movers is a spectacular company with a lot of heart. They'll get the job done, and make it right, come what may! If that isn't worth your business, I don't know what else is. I cannot think of another company I would trust more with a move. I give them my highest recommendation. Thanks Eko Movers!

This company gets 1 star from me. I booked them in advance about 1.5 weeks before a move. My dad passed away and we needed movers to bring items to my moms house and storage. I booked, and paid the deposit. The men said workers had a fam emergency that morning and told me that my 10 AM Sunday appointment would be delayed 2 hours due to a family emergency. The man then told me the workers were over an 1 hour in distance away and would give me an ETA soon. The owner never answered the phone. After waiting another 1.5 hours he finally told me the men would not make it as they would not be ready until 4-5 PM. Not sure how in the world a booked 10 AM appointment could ever be delayed to make me want to wait on movers to come at 4 or 5 pm. Clearly this company is unorganized. The owner did communicate with me by message to share updates and confirmed he would refund the deposit but this was a big deal and a bad experience.
