Cheryl did an amazing job training my dog. He was only about 12 weeks when she started with him and he has progressed tremendously! She made sure he met all the goals we talked about. I highly recommend her!

We took our ten month old lab to Melissa and she corrected everything we asked. This greatly exceeded our expectations! We are now working on repetition and everything is going extremely well. I would highly recommend Melissa's Mutt's and Mongrel's to anyone needing help with dog training.

Stephanie and Bret are very professional and extremely knowledgable. They have helped my husband and me turn our dog into a well-behaved German Shepherd Dog. They were quick to respond to my first inquiry about dog training. I like that they not only were interested in our one dog, but also looked at the whole pack (as we have a few dogs) and even evaluated them as a group. I would highly recommend them to anyone looking for a great experience training your pup.

I enrolled my 7 month old American bully pup Jax into Rogers 2 week board in train program. Roger kept us updated daily with status messages and pictures which made the 2 weeks without Jax easier. We missed him like crazy. When we picked up Jax roger went over the e collar and commands with me and my children so we all felt comfortable using it. We were so amazed with what roger had taught Jax. Not only did he teach the commands that were included with the 2 week board in train we paid for but he went above and beyond and taught Jax several advanced commands too! If you are thinking about obedience training for your dog roger is the man to use.

100% recommended!!! We searched for a dog trainer on thumbtack not knowing anyone in the area, and we felt that Robert was the most personable and wanting to know what we were looking to achieve..... so we drove the extra distance to have him board and train our rescue dog. The outcome was remarkable and more than we expected with only 10 days with her. He kept in touch with us and even sent photos. She came home happy and listening to commands! Some friends of ours are already booking their dogs with him and I am looking forward to seeing their progress as well. Thanks for your amazing work Robert!!!

Anyone who knows me in person knows that I am 100% obsessed and protective of my dogs. I always strive to give them the best life they deserve. When my class schedule was getting too busy, I needed someone to help me out with the dogs so they weren't cooped up all day. I am so thankful I found Allie because she seems to care for them as much as I do. When I get back from my classes, they are almost too tired to say hi to me! I also really appreciate how she has personalized regimens for each dog. I have a hyper younger dog and an aging dog so they obviously need different workouts. I honestly have no idea what I'd do if Allie wasn't here to help me out. If you're ever in need of an AMAZING dog walker, give Allie a call!!

Extremely satisfied. Fit me into her schedule on short notice, and did a beautiful job grooming my Bernese Mountain Dog in preparation for a show. Particularly liked how well she trimmed the nails! Paisley was happy, too. We'll definitely return again. :)

About

We focus more exclusively on the relationship between pet and owner, creating an unbreakable bond that ties them together, so that they work better together. We will initially work with the dog, showing them the command and what is expected, then we hand the control to the owner and help them master the command. I love working with the pets and owners and the satisfaction I feel when I see pet and owner working hand in paw

I can provide training and exercise that will help your dog become a great family member! I use completely force free methods. ZERO prong, choke, chain, or shock collars. Buckle or martingale collars are acceptable along with front clasp harnesses! (I don't mind giving recommendations) We work WITH our dogs and help them figure out what we DO want from them and not what we DON'T want from them. I will help you make training into a fun game with your dog instead of a 'chore'. Training doesn't only make your pup tolerable to the family unit but strengthens your bond to your pup and makes your dog WANT to work for you! I love seeing the faces of dog parents when they see their dogs reach their goals! The 'AH-HA' moment! Creating working, dynamic relationships between owner and dog! Exposing FORCE FREE training!!! About

Does your dog hate car rides? Does he/she have anxiety about going to the groomers? Are you too busy to take your precious pooch to the beauty salon? Then, look no further! I am a certified groomer of seven years, a stay-at-home mother, and animal behavior specialist. I will come to your house and groom your puppy right before your eyes! I provide full-service grooming, from a simple bathing to breeding and doing specific hair cuts. All grooming comes complete with nail grinding (no painful nail cutting), ear cleaning, anal glands expressed (yes gross but extremely necessary for a healthy pet), and complimentary de-shed treatment. Aside from grooming, I can also provide one-on-one training techniques (our puppy is fully potty trained at only 10 weeks old!) Note that I will groom cats if they are okay with strangers, and you agree to a small dose of children's Benadryl. This will keep your kitty from becoming too anxious and is safer for their well being and mine. Most grooming companies refuse cats and/or will give them anesthesia! My pricing is extremely reasonable and cheaper than PetsMart. It's guaranteed! You can call today to schedule an appointment and have your pet pretty for the holidays!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How old should a puppy be for training?

Dog training shouldn’t wait until you’re having behavior problems. If you get a new puppy, start from the beginning with professional training to give both you and your puppy the tools you need for a healthy relationship. Dog training is as much about teaching the owner how to interact with their new dog as it is about the dog learning to behave. Puppy training can start as early as eight weeks old. Trainers who offer puppy training programs may works specifically with dogs between the ages of 8 and 18 weeks old. Trainers can teach owners about potty training and how to deal with accidents, working with separation anxiety, and training your pooch out of destructive behaviors like chewing, biting and demand barking. Puppies will start to learn to walk on-leash and other basic skills.

In addition to behavior training, socializing your puppy is an important part of dog training. Socializing your dog means they become comfortable and confident in a variety of settings and have a great foundation for becoming a well-adjusted adult dog. After your puppy has had the proper vaccinations, you can start to introduce it to a variety of different dogs and people in safe settings.

Which dog training method is best?

The best type of dog training for both you and your dog depends on the outcomes you hope to achieve. If you want your dog to learn agility training, go to someone who specializes in those techniques. Regardless of whether you want your dog to learn basic behavior or competitive-level tricks, the majority of dog training is actually about training the owner how to communicate with their dog. Most professional dog trainers agree that a model of training based on positive reinforcement breeds a happy, healthy, well-adjusted dog. The alternative to positive reinforcement training is using force or aggression techniques like physical punishment or shock-collar training to get the dog to do (or not do) a behavior. While the dog may learn how to behavior as you direct, it is also learning to communicate with force and aggression, and will in turn use those behaviors on other dogs (or people) that are smaller or weaker than it is. Before signing up with a dog trainer, meet with the trainer and ask for references. Watch the trainer interact with your dog, and make sure they treat your dog with patience and firm kindness. Ask them questions about their training methods:

  • What type of training methods do you use?
  • What is your background and training, and how did you become a dog trainer?
  • How long do you expect that we will work together before we achieve the results I’m after?

How long does it take to train a puppy?

Dog training depends on the dog and how much homework the dog owner is willing to put in. Puppy training is similar to dog training in that the onus of the work depends on the owner learning new ways to interact with their dog. For a quick crash course, you can opt for a single, two hour smart-start puppy training consultation to teach you the ins and outs of being a new dog parent. You can learn how to manage potty training and what to do if the puppy experiences separation anxiety. As long as you’re willing to work on dog training a little bit each day, your puppy will quickly learn these new behaviors. If you’re not confident about training your puppy yourself, you can enroll in a 6- to 8-week puppy training course, with weekly lessons touching on everything from bite control to obedience. Puppies usually need to be at least three months old for group training classes. If you want more intensive one-on-one work, you can opt for private lessons. Some behavior problems can be resolved in one session if the dog owner learns and can implement new skills. In the case of more serious issues, 3 to 10 private sessions can typically correct challenges.
