As brand new homeowners, the unthinkable happened and a tree fell in our yard the first weekend after we moved in. Jeff was extremely professional and quick, he removed the tree in expert time and was such a delight to work with. We will definitely do business again, we highly recommend his services!!

I hired DeCesare Landscaping to regrade our back yard and move a drainage swale back into the tree line instead of in our usable yard space. Robert did a fantastic job and the back yard looks amazing. Also very reasonably priced for the work that was performed. I would hire again.

I hired Ash Tree Service to plow my driveway for the entire winter season. It was a light winter, so they didn't need to come often, but every time there was snow my driveway was plowed before I left for work. I will definitely use them next year!!

I hired Clinton to level out my front yard after my house was connected to the street sewer lines. He did a very good job and I would use his service again. In fact, I've scheduled him to come back and prune/shape up my flowering cherry tree. It's good to know his services are available in the future.

The crew at Jake's Landscapes did a great job installing river rock and a new tree in my front yard. In addition, they did great work on the Spring clean-up and removal of several bushes as well. I would definitely recommend them to friends, clients, and neighbors.

I hired TAZ Tree Services to remove a large dead section from my maple and they did a fantastic job! I was pleasantly surprised that they arrived 10 min early (which was good since I had to get to work). They were very professional. When I came home from work it was like they were never there! I would recommend their services to anyone.

We had a great experience with Mike. He was very quick to respond to our request, and came out the next day to take a look at the project and give us a quote. They got started that week and finished up the following weekend. Mike communicated with us the entire time and provided detailed explanations on what the project would entail. They cleaned up so well, you could hardly tell they were here. Our next door neighbor came over to check it out and said that he has never seen a tree company clean up as well as they did. Again, we had a great experience with Chainsaw Mike's and would highly recommend this company to anyone.

Excellent work! They came out quickly, and got the job done safely. A large tree branch fell in my backyard, and they safely cut it down even though it was close to the house. They even cut it into small pieces for firewood for me. A job well done!

I liked Geremy immediately. I told him what I wanted for my years-neglected yard, we walked around and he knew every plant hidden in the weeds of the former gardens. He gave me good advice and took care of what I needed. Now I have clean garden beds, trimmed shrubs, and trees that were growing in the garden transplanted to better locations. Geremy then told me what my newly repaired gardens need next, and I hope to be able to do that myself. We'll see! They did the entire job in one day for a good price. Next year, I plan to call him to clean up another long neglected area of the yard. I just cannot do it all at once. I would absolutely not hesitate to call him.

Just love the work Tony did for me. Cut down 1 tree, trimmed another. I really didn't expect the clean-up to be as good a job as Tony and his crew did. His crew as very professional and knowledgeable about trees. I will defiantly use him again this fall. Price was a little high , but with the job he did I didn't mind paying it

I highly recommend this pro! He was knowledgeable, prompt, and very courteous. He offered recommendations that were great (we didnt know anything about how thw tree ahould actually look as we recently moved in). The difference in the tree is like night and day, and we have had neighbors compliment us on how nice it looks. Also, he was very reasonable in pricing. I believe that it was a very fair deal on both sides. I have a few more trees in my yard that need trimming, and I will definitely be calling him back.

I had a tree split in a storm. Jason contacted me within minutes of my Thumbtack request. He was at my house that evening-on time, to give a quote. Not only was his quote very reasonable, he was able to get the job done quickly. He and his crew did an excellent job with removal, stump grinding and clean up. Not only would I hire him again, I asked for his card so I may send more business his way.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to remove a tree stump?

Once you have a tree cut down, you’ll probably want to remove the tree stump as well. You may want the stump removed for aesthetics, the tree stump could be diseased, you might want to prevent regrowth, or you may find the roots are causing problems and need to be removed. Tree removal costs don’t always include the cost to grind out or dig out a tree stump after the tree has been felled and the trunk removed. The national average cost for stump removal ranges from $150 to $200. There are two main methods for dealing with tree stumps. In grinding, pros use a chipping machine to grind away the above-level tree stump until it sits just below the soil surface. Tree stump removal entails lifting the entire root ball of a tree out of the soil. Removing the stump will leave a hole in the ground and also take more time, labor and money than stump grinding. Here are some examples of average tree stump removal costs:

  • Stump grinding: $2-$4 per inch.
  • Tree stump removal: average of $60-$350.

The final price will depend on the stump’s size, condition, location and condition of the soil around it.

How much does it cost to cut down a massive tree?

If you have to remove a big, beautiful tree from your property, you’ll definitely need an arborist. Cutting down a massive tree without the proper tools or training can lead to major property damage or injury. A huge tree may need to be removed if it is diseased or dying and poses a safety risk, has suffered a blow from a storm and isn’t safe, or is growing into your home, your home’s foundation, your septic system, or your power lines. Removal costs for such large trees will depend on the tree’s height, diameter, and relative safety and accessibility, as well as whether you also need the felled tree and stump removed. The bare minimum for removal of a tree over 75 or 80 feet would be $1,000. This may not include tree quartering and removal or stump grinding. Stump grinding ranges on average from $2 to $4 per inch of the stump’s diameter. There is no set price as each situation is unique, so it’s always best to have an arborist give you a quote and detail exactly which services are included in the price.

How much does it cost to trim a tree?

The national price range for tree trimming is $270-$450. Tree trimming is often done by a professional arborist who is trained to safely trim and prune trees for both the health of the tree and the safety of the residents and their property. Trying to do your own tree trimming is not advisable unless you have the proper know-how. Tree trimming companies may charge an hourly rate for their services. The hourly rate may be higher or lower for different trees to reflect the relative safety measures, skill, equipment or people power needed to handle the job. For this reason, most tree services provide free estimates.

One example of an hourly rate for professional tree trimming services is $150 per hour. Costs may be under $100 or could be higher than $300 per hour, depending on variables such as proximity to buildings, health of the tree, height and diameter of the tree, and type of tree trimming desired. Geography and regional cost of living and regional costs to do business will also play a role in your tree removal costs.

How much does it cost to cut a tree down?

When you’re ready to have a tree on your property come down, it’s time to call an arborist. The national average price range for tree-trimming costs is $270-$450. Tree removal costs can vary based on the height, diameter, location and health of the tree, and on whether you want to remove the stump. Height plays a major role in tree removal costs. Small trees, no more than 30 feet tall, are usually thinner in diameter and easier and safer for an arborist to manage. Removal of a small tree can cost anywhere from under $150 to over $450. Removal of medium-height trees, from 30 feet to 60 feet tall, could cost anywhere between $150 and $850 or more. Tall trees, typically 60 feet to 80 feet tall, may start at $500 or cost more than $1,000 to cut down. As the height and diameter increase, so does the cost.

Location is critical, too. Removing a tree in an open space is quicker and presents fewer obstacles than removing a tree that is growing flush to your house. Arborists can assess your tree and provide you with quotes based on the variables involved. For example, removing a medium-size hackberry tree that was growing too close to a home — the roots were damaging the home’s foundation — cost $1,500. This price included rope-down, house protection, tree quartering and stacking, and stump removal.

How much does it cost to remove a fallen tree?

If you need to have a tree cut down, have you planned what will happen next? Arborists often charge an additional fee to quarter and remove the fallen tree from your property, so anticipate this as part of your tree removal costs. You can elect to have the wood cut for use in your fireplace, or you may prefer to have it hauled away completely.

Tree removal costs may vary based on the height and the width of the felled tree. Size affects the labor required for removal, which will be reflected in the cost. For example, a tree service company may charge an additional $100-$120 to haul away the pieces of a felled tree. The service may cost as little as $75 in some regions and more than $150 in others. Regional labor rates, the cost of living and the cost to do business in your area will be reflected in your tree removal cost.
