Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a house cleaner during the COVID-19 pandemic?

The best way to set up a consultation with a house cleaner during the COVID-19 pandemic is by using virtual, online tools. Start by performing an online search for local house cleaners. Message them to set up either a phone call or video call to perform a consultation. During this call, they can give you recommendations and may be able to estimate the cost of their services. Be sure to discuss whether they accept virtual payments and any precautions they can take to perform the job safely.

Can I use digital payments to pay for house cleaning?

Not only do many house cleaners accept digital payments through platforms like Zelle, PayPal, Square Cash, Google Pay, Venmo and more, but this may become more common as the COVID-19 pandemic pushes more service workers to digitize. This means you can pay your house cleaner without making physical contact or handling money.

If cleaning is absolutely essential during the current crisis, consult with the house cleaner beforehand to ensure a safe monetary transaction that complies with current government guidelines and recommendations for social distancing.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire a house cleaner when social distancing?

If you hire a house cleaner to clean the inside of your home, do not make physical contact. Stay at least 6 feet apart at all times, sanitize any surfaces after cleaning and wash your hands thoroughly. Exchange all payments digitally instead of with cash. When contacting a house cleaner, put a plan in place to ensure everyone's safety.

How can I find out if a house cleaner is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

A house cleaner is generally not considered an essential service sector during the coronavirus pandemic. To find out which services are considered essential, visit your city and state government, and read their guidelines. A national list of essential service providers can be found on CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 site. This webpage lists 16 different infrastructure sectors considered to be essential. However, not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Does a house cleaner need to enter my home?

Yes, in almost all cases a house cleaner needs to enter your home. However, a cleaner may not need to enter your home if they are solely cleaning outside areas.

There may be some cases in which a cleaner is necessary. If so, take precautions — avoid being in the same room, make no physical contact, sanitize any surfaces and pay through a digital service instead of using cash.

Do house cleaners offer remote or virtual services?

House cleaning is generally done in person, but some may be willing to offer remote services. If you find a house cleaner’s profile that states they’re offering remote services, contact the pro to talk about your options.

If you’d rather hire a house cleaner to clean your home when the pandemic is over, you may be able to book an appointment at a later date. Start by comparing local house cleaners in your area side-by-side.

Should I hire a move-out cleaning service or do it myself?

You may benefit from hiring a professional move-out cleaning service, depending on your budget, time frame and whether you will be getting a deposit back. Hiring a cleaning service takes the stress out of your move. But if you’ve had your house regularly deep-cleaned, or if your landlord will charge you for cleaning anyway, you can save costs by DIY-ing it.

How long does it take to clean a house professionally?

Generally, getting your house cleaned professionally can take several hours. The time it takes for house cleaners to complete their job depends on the size of your home, the number of bedrooms and bathrooms you have, the type of service you require and the condition of your house. It also might depend on how many employees are cleaning and the supplies they are using. If you get recurring cleaning services, the first visit might take a bit longer than the subsequent visits.

When choosing the best house cleaner for you, ask for an estimate about how long their services will take.

How much is a house cleaning?

The national average cost for house cleaning ranges between $25 and $50 per hour, per cleaner. However, the cost of house cleaning services near you might be different.

House cleaning prices vary based on how many square feet your home is, how dirty your house gets and how often the cleaning service comes. And, prices can be lower in areas with a lower cost of living, higher in big cities or affluent regions.

Some companies charge a set amount — such as 5 cents — per square foot, with a minimum amount, such as $100. You may save money by increasing the frequency of your house cleaning visits. Often a company will charge you less per cleaning when you schedule more cleanings per month. The cost advantage rewards your loyalty, and also reflects the fact that more frequent cleanings make it easier to maintain a high level of cleanliness in your home. A housecleaning service may charge more for the first visit or for one-time services than for recurring cleanings.

How much does it cost to deep clean a house?

Deep cleaning a house goes beyond the surface level to clear out the dust, grime and gunk that’s collecting on the fan blades, hiding in the blinds, and built up inside the refrigerator drawers. Deep cleaning of a home or apartment costs more than regular house cleaning because it takes more time, effort, and cleaning products. You may choose to have a deep cleaning once or several times a year in addition to your standard cleaning services. You may have a one-time deep cleaning to prepare for company or to clean after a house party. Companies may charge an hourly rate or a price per square foot, or may offer you a flat rate after they have visited your home and estimated work time. The national average house cleaning price is $110-$150, with rates ranging higher for deep-cleaning services. Here are some examples of how a company may calculate their deep-cleaning prices:

  • 10 cents per square foot (compared with 5 cents per square foot for standard house cleaning).
  • $300 for a 3,000-square-foot home.
  • $25 per hour per worker for deep-cleaning services.

Kleen Bathrooms reached out to me the very same day , that too on a Sunday, that I submitted my request for a one-time house clean service (on Thumbtack). They were very responsive and managed to accommodate all my needs, by providing me services the very next day and at the time I wanted them to do the cleaning. Jennifer who showed up to clean my house was punctual, very professional, friendly, and did a fantastic job. I will recommend Kleen Bathrooms to friends and family as well as reach out to them for my future needs.

Nyl has been a great help with keeping our home clean. With 2 pets and and each of us busy with work, his flexible scheduling and prompt communication is priceless. Being able to schedule specific visit frequency allows us to fit this service to our budget. Nyl is open to suggestion and is attentive to specific requests like cleaning baseboards when asked. Cleaning Services Worldwide is our first and only time using a house cleaning service, and we’ll be sticking with it!

We had a great experience using Tima's Cleaning Company recently! Appreciated Abe's call prior to the appointment to verify all of the details about our house, any special things we needed done and to confirm arrival time / number of cleaning people coming. All cleaning ladies were punctual, friendly and thorough. If we noticed anything that was missed or that we forgot to point out initially, they were happy to revisit. Also appreciated Abe's visit post cleaning to do a walk-through and ensure fair quote for monthly service going forward. One of the better experiences we've had with cleaning companies!

Jenny was fabulous! I will definitely be using her again. She was very thorough and noticed and cleaned even the little things. She's professional and flexible. The job took about four hours, but the time spent was well worth it, as my house looks and smells fantastic!

If you have extensive time available to fix their mistakes, it may be worth hiring them - otherwise, I'd skip it. (And be aware that, unfortunately, being clear about your expectations is a big "red flag”!) I was so impressed with them in the beginning – super nice and helpful as I was setting up the service, including reassuring me how thorough they are. I’m still appreciative of that front-end customer service! Sadly, the service itself was awful. The worst part was not the fact that I had (someone else's) toenail clippings in my cabinet and drawer after they finished cleaning, among many other missed areas. It was also not that I was accused by the owner of lying because I hadn’t sent in more than 4 photos of the areas that were missed (yikes! I guess I’ll take more while I’m chasing my toddlers and trying to move into a new house next time..). The worst part was that the owner told me that the fact that I was clear about my expectations (specifically, apparently, the fact that I told the people that I spoke with initially that I was looking for someone to clean the house as well as I would have -- which I still imagine is what many people are looking for when they hire a cleaning crew) was a major "red flag to them from the beginning." Instead of raising that at that time, they reassured me repeatedly about how thorough they are and sent me a pretty blog post to back that up. If they had just told me from the beginning that that was a “red flag”, I would have very happily found another cleaning company and this all would have been avoided (and I could have moved into my new home on time!). That is a pretty big ethical red flag to me. I hired them to do a thorough cleaning before my husband and I moved ourselves and our two young children into our new home. This is a partial list of what was NOT cleaned (all but one are things we had specifically agreed on ahead of time): -The first floor bathroom cabinet and drawer - there is one cabinet and one drawer in this bathroom, and they both had TOENAIL CLIPPINGS in them. -The cabinets in the kitchen - all of the top cabinets, at least one mid-level cabinet, and at least one lower-level cabinet were all still clearly visibly dirty. (Contents included old toothpicks, crumbs, hair, and visible layers of dust, as well as old cabinet liners that I had specifically asked them to remove from all of the cabinets.) They likely did clean some of the rest of them, but I had no way to know which ones, so I had to re-clean all of them. -The broiler - the bottom of the broiler was covered with crumbs -The top of the fridge - there was a visible layer of dirt (To be fair, we didn't talk about this specifically ahead of time, but I would have expected them to wipe off the top of the fridge as most standard house cleanings involve this detail) -At least one ceiling fan - there was a visible layer of dust (I did not go through and check every ceiling fan in the house - just a small sample, and one of the small sample had a visible layer of dust) -The window wells in the master bedroom - there were visible layers of grime -The window wells in the master bathroom - there were visible layers of dirt (To be fair, I'll note that we had had a contractor working on the floor in the master bedroom, so I'd said they didn't need to do the floors in there, but I had specifically asked them to clean the master bathroom. I do know that they cleaned the shower, but since they didn't do the drawers in there until I asked right before they left, and since they didn't do the window wells, my assumption had to be that they didn't clean anything else either.) -The top shelves in three different closets - there were visible layers of dust -A drawer in the other bathroom - there were several hairs in it This is just a sample. I did not go through and check every single drawer and shelf and ceiling fan and surface in the house and catalog them - that's what they asked me to do and it would have been an immense waste of time. Of the places we did look, these are some of the areas that were still dirty. To be fair, the company did offer to send the same crew back to fix it - but ensuring that they did a thorough job would have required a level of oversight that no one would have been comfortable with, and I frankly didn't have 4 hours to watch someone clean my home, so that wasn't a reasonable option. At my request, they also offered to send a manager out to oversee a different team, which I appreciated - unfortunately, I would have had to wait several days for that to happen, which I couldn't do. I was already delayed moving into our new home by 4 days because of their sloppy work, and for many reasons we couldn't afford to be delayed in the move any further, so we declined that offer. In the end, the only areas that I had reason to be confident actually got cleaned were the floors, the fridge and one shower - and so those were the only areas I didn't need to either re-do myself or hire another company to re-do. A rough estimate puts that at maybe 1/6 of the home, and I offered up-front to pay $100 for that cleaning (as I didn't believe any company would charge me more than $100 for that level of service), but I was charged over $200. And again, to be fair, that was a discount from the original price, but still far more than I'm happy to have paid for a sloppy job and a 4-day delay in my move. All-in-all, I think it's certainly possible that this company in general may be much more thorough, and it's possible that this was just a very off day - we all have them! I'm also sure that if I'd seen each of these missed areas before the crew left, they would have gone back around and done it (and charged me for the extra time), but there's not any way to catch all of the spots someone might have missed except for opening up every single cabinet and drawer in the house, so that's certainly not what I expect when I hire a cleaning crew, especially the most expensive of the 10 that sent me quotes. I also appreciate the beginnings of their attempts to resolve it, but I wish that they understood that clients do not have unlimited time to fix their mistakes.

I'm so grateful to Abe and the crew at Tima's cleaning! I was moving in to a new house and looking for a team to do a good, thorough cleaning while it was still empty before we moved in. Unfortunately, the company I hired to do that did a very poor job, so I was left scrambling (and delayed in moving my family into our new home by several days because of it) and looking for a company I could count on and who could come do this big job on last-minute notice. Abe and Tima's totally came through on both fronts! Abe was able to work with my schedule and get a crew there when I needed them, and was friendly, professional and super responsive in all of our set-up. And then the cleaners themselves were fantastic! They were super thorough, and told me proactively about the one or two areas they had to leave undone because they couldn't reach them. Abe even came over himself mid-way through to check in and to add another person to make sure the job got done well and on time. Abe and crew - I wish I'd worked with you from the beginning, and I'm so grateful for all of your help!!
