Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a mover during the COVID-19 pandemic?

If you’re trying to set up a consultation or an appointment with a mover during the COVID-19 pandemic, make sure to use digital tools to avoid exposure. When searching for movers online, ask if they’d be willing to do a video chat to assess the size of your move. This will be in place of the typical “walk-through” they perform, and they may be able to give you a price quote. You can also discuss safe strategies for completing the job during your call or video chat.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire a mover when social distancing?

If you decide to hire a mover, consider making adjustments to accommodate current guidelines. This may involve staying outside while the mover works inside your home or letting the mover handle only parts of the move.

It’s important to follow social distancing guidelines while performing any service work. For example, do not make physical contact with the movers, maintain at least 6 feet of distance between you at all times, and use digital payments instead of cash or a check.

How can I find out if a mover is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Your local city or state’s government website is a great resource if you’re trying to figure out whether a mover is considered an essential service provider during the COVID-19 pandemic.

For a source of national guidelines, visit the CISA website’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19. On this page, you’ll find 16 categories of critical infrastructure sectors. But note that some -- not all --  jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Can I use digital payments to pay for moving services?

Most local moving companies are likely to accept some form of digital payment. Particularly with the COVID-19 pandemic, more companies are likely to conduct transactions through platforms like PayPal, Zelle, Square Cash, Venmo, Google Pay and more.

To ensure the mover accepts a platform you can use, you can peruse the mover’s online profile and see what is listed there. You can also ask the mover about payment policies during a consultation call.

Does a mover need to enter my home?

A mover will likely need to enter your home -- unless you’ve placed all of your belongings outside beforehand. To stay safe during the COVID-19 pandemic, you might to consider keeping all (or most) of the work outside and/or having at-risk individuals leave the house while the movers work.

You can minimize exposure by doing a preliminary walk-through by video call instead of in person. Discuss your options with the top movers near you before hiring one.

Do movers offer remote or virtual services?

Movers generally need to be present to do their job. But if you come across a mover’s profile that states they’re offering remote services, you can contact them to see what those services include.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

Can you move furniture by yourself?

You might be able to move smaller items like nightstands, small desks, chairs and small tables by yourself. However, it’s best to get a professional mover near you to move larger items such as couches, dressers, armoires and televisions.

If you do decide to move furniture by yourself, carefully lift and lower items and take your time.

How much does it cost to move a couch?

It costs around $290, on average, to move a couch. However, your actual cost will depend on a variety of factors. Couch movers will often quote the job based on the size of the couch, as well as how far it has to travel. A larger couch, such as a sectional, will likely cost more money to move.

On the other hand, smaller couches typically cost less, as there are fewer sections and fewer people are required to move it. Some couches may be very delicate due to their age, or they may have certain decorative details that complicate the moving process. These may cost more as well.

Contact professional furniture movers near you to get estimates for your move.

How do I protect my furniture when moving?

To protect furniture when moving, get furniture protectors. These will help cushion accidental impacts that may occur while making your way through tight spaces. You can also use furniture sliders for hardwood floors, which can make moving heavy or awkward furniture across your floors a lot easier than lugging it all the way.

A professional mover near you will likely have these and other moving equipment to ensure your furniture remains intact and doesn’t damage your new — or old — home.

Communication was great from the time we scheduled our move. The morning of our move we were short a mover, but were communicated with immediately and continued the communication all day. They made sure they sent a third mover immediately. The guys worked very hard all day, were very friendly, and made sure we were happy all day. We will definitely recommend DSL to friends and use them for future needs.

DSL had truck problems the day of our move and ended up cancelling late evening; however, the owner showed up to move our furniture the next morning. He did keep in contact, was professional and friendly. He and his crew finished moving the furniture within a few hours; nothing was damaged. The price was very reasonable. I would recommend DSL and will used them again in the future.

They helped me relocating to a new location. I liked the job. They were quick and dedicated. The only issue I had was they did not bring cardboard boxes to pack up things. Any mover should have cardboard boxes and tapes to move items from one place to another. I had to buy large boxes from Walmart. It was not told earlier that they would not be bringing boxes. This was kinda unexpected and at the last minute I had to rush to Walmart Apart from that, the move was smooth and the men were professional in shifting things. I would recommend Clark & Sons for moving your home.

It was great to have hired them for our move. We hired them based on their on thumbtack and BBB, and we are glad we did. They were professional, flexible and easy to work with. It wasn’t a easy move considering it was snowing and temp down to teens, but they were up at it and didn’t shirk a bit. I would definitely recommend them.

Let me first say that the amount of stars in NO WAY is a reflection of the actual moving team of two that worked incredibly hard for us. I would hire them without using this company if I could should there be a need in the future and you bet they got a sizable tip for how hard they worked. Initially the process and communication with Randy was great. I was confident in having chosen this company based on reviews and his positive attitude considering we've had bad experiences in the past and I expressed that to him also. I also explained we work 3rd shift and needed an afternoon move, sent photos and descriptive details and told him we'd need a stop at a storage locker as well. (the actual guys who moved us were not told about that.) The short of it is that there wasn't enough room in the truck for all of our stuff and we ended up having to move some ourselves with my elderly parents helping to unload the eko truck since it was so late in the night. I wrote to Randy and asked about this experience and wondered why it even happened and his response was- "That's why we suggest early morning moving and more men." Well... excuse me but no one suggested a morning move or more men or that it would potentially be an issue. Terrible communication with me and from Randy to his associates. I feel like the team lead of the two who moved us would be better suited for a manager position. Leaving your customer to feel like she did something wrong after a project gone wrong is just bad business. Would not recommend.

I would highly recommend Robinson Relocation. They worked hard and got the job done efficiently. Their cost was lower than other local movers.

Marathon movers is a quality moving company at a great price. They all are understanding, ask for a "run of show" to know where to start, and are careful with your items. I recommend to have the house ready for when they come in, so the job goes smoother. The one reason I have not given five stars is because unfortunately they scratched the floor of the new house when dropping off one of the items.

They show up on time and worked hard for several hours without resting much. I definitely use EkoMover next time when I move again. Great work, Tom and his team.

We had two moving units full of furniture and boxes. Both Paul and Don were very helpful. They assembled a fairly large queen headboard for us. We were pleased with their effort and work ethics.

We used their service in July 2015. Staff was friendly, arrived on time. They started with 2 individuals and then a third joined them. moving from a 2 bedroom apt with mainly 2 beds, TV, TV stand and a couch boxes from kitchen and clothing not much else. Upon final inspection one of the dressers leg was damaged. we were assured we would be reimbursed. the process was difficult. didnt get a return call for weeks. then when we finally did hear from someone had to provide all this information and in the end only got reimbursed a minuscule amount. The movers were great. the management and how they handled the situation was poor.

I have many pictures and videos , also emails back and forth that prove the unprofessionalism from this company . They lied to us with promise in the contract that they never ever keep as talking about professional movers when they send Two kids very young with any experience on how to carry a sofa or how to load a truck . Do not hire this company if you don’t want to finish loosing all your belongings . That happened already to us .
