Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Can you move furniture by yourself?

You might be able to move smaller items like nightstands, small desks, chairs and small tables by yourself. However, it’s best to get a professional mover near you to move larger items such as couches, dressers, armoires and televisions.

If you do decide to move furniture by yourself, carefully lift and lower items and take your time.

Can I use digital payments to pay for moving services?

Most local moving companies are likely to accept some form of digital payment. Particularly with the COVID-19 pandemic, more companies are likely to conduct transactions through platforms like PayPal, Zelle, Square Cash, Venmo, Google Pay and more.

To ensure the mover accepts a platform you can use, you can peruse the mover’s online profile and see what is listed there. You can also ask the mover about payment policies during a consultation call.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a mover during the COVID-19 pandemic?

If you’re trying to set up a consultation or an appointment with a mover during the COVID-19 pandemic, make sure to use digital tools to avoid exposure. When searching for movers online, ask if they’d be willing to do a video chat to assess the size of your move. This will be in place of the typical “walk-through” they perform, and they may be able to give you a price quote. You can also discuss safe strategies for completing the job during your call or video chat.

How can I find out if a mover is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Your local city or state’s government website is a great resource if you’re trying to figure out whether a mover is considered an essential service provider during the COVID-19 pandemic.

For a source of national guidelines, visit the CISA website’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19. On this page, you’ll find 16 categories of critical infrastructure sectors. But note that some -- not all --  jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Is it cheaper to move your stuff or buy new stuff?

It often makes more financial sense to buy new stuff when you have the chance to sell furniture to offset the cost. The cost of moving your current furniture can sometimes be more than buying new things, particularly if the furniture is large or cumbersome to move. You can sell furniture online, or make a furniture donation and deduct it from your taxes (if it qualifies as a charitable contribution). Some places near you may even offer free furniture pickup when you choose to donate.

If you have valuable furniture that would be costly to replace, however, it may be cheaper to move them. To find out which option is best for you, contact professional movers in your area to receive quotes and estimates.

Do movers offer remote or virtual services?

Movers generally need to be present to do their job. But if you come across a mover’s profile that states they’re offering remote services, you can contact them to see what those services include.

Does a mover need to enter my home?

A mover will likely need to enter your home -- unless you’ve placed all of your belongings outside beforehand. To stay safe during the COVID-19 pandemic, you might to consider keeping all (or most) of the work outside and/or having at-risk individuals leave the house while the movers work.

You can minimize exposure by doing a preliminary walk-through by video call instead of in person. Discuss your options with the top movers near you before hiring one.

How do I protect my furniture when moving?

To protect furniture when moving, get furniture protectors. These will help cushion accidental impacts that may occur while making your way through tight spaces. You can also use furniture sliders for hardwood floors, which can make moving heavy or awkward furniture across your floors a lot easier than lugging it all the way.

A professional mover near you will likely have these and other moving equipment to ensure your furniture remains intact and doesn’t damage your new — or old — home.

Can you hire movers to move one item?

Yes, you can hire movers to move one item. Single-item movers are usually more than happy to give you a quote, which will likely be based on a few factors.

One of the primary things to take into consideration is the number of movers it takes to move one item. For instance, if you want to move one item of furniture, it may take several movers — particularly if it is a challenging move involving multiple floors.

Contact single-item movers near you to find out what services they offer, and get free estimates.

How much does it cost to move a couch?

It costs around $290, on average, to move a couch. However, your actual cost will depend on a variety of factors. Couch movers will often quote the job based on the size of the couch, as well as how far it has to travel. A larger couch, such as a sectional, will likely cost more money to move.

On the other hand, smaller couches typically cost less, as there are fewer sections and fewer people are required to move it. Some couches may be very delicate due to their age, or they may have certain decorative details that complicate the moving process. These may cost more as well.

Contact professional furniture movers near you to get estimates for your move.

Jacob and his co-worker did an absolutely amazing job helping me with my move. They were professional, courteous, fast, and great to talk to. I have really tight hallways with two large couches and Jacob did a better job than the furniture store did when they delivered my furniture. I highly recommend Jacob and ASAP Moving to everyone who needs a job done right!

Zach and Jerry did a great job helping me with my move. It had snowed a lot the day before the move but they handled the weather like pros. They had no problem putting the shoe covers on and off while in the house to not track in any snow. I also had some very angry cats that did not make their job easier, and they handled that very well. Overall the move did take longer than expected (about 4 and a half hours), but it was worth it for the care and attention they put into taking my furniture apart, putting it back together and placing it everywhere I wanted. I hope I don't have to move again any time soon, but when I do I will be using A & M Friendly Movers again.

I Needed the contents of a relocation pod unloaded, moved locally, and moved up 4 floors, all on short notice. Other companies were less than eager to do it and wanted to charge a fee for last minute (a few days notice). This company was thoughtful, had a better quote, and no "short notice" fee. Their staff were exceptionally kind and professional and took care to not scratch or damage my heirloom furniture. It all was easy and seamless. I will recommend them to everyone I know!!!

James the owner is a solid guy. After his employees did not show up, he made the trip himself to help me make my move date which was on a tight timeline. He moved multiple pieces of furniture on his own and with his own vehicle, not a box truck which required more than one trip. I am lucky to work from home so the lateness and change of plans didn’t disrupt my day too much. I appreciate his help and hope he can find himself a more reliable team soon. He did a great job!

Overall, good experience! Evan and Billy were our movers and were professional and personable. They did a great job protecting the furniture as well as my house! Provided a complimentary veteran discount of 10% which was greatly appreciated, so much so I doubled the difference in tips back to the crew. Docked 1 star due to no communication on missed original appt date and time. Only after reaching out past the scheduled time dud I learn of truck problems and the need to reschedule. Will use this company again.

DO NOT hire as movers. I was moving from one apartment to another in an adjacent building. My old roommate was in her bedroom with the door shut while the two men were gathering my things and apparently complaining about me/the job the entire time. Took twice as long as I was told it would take even though I'd listed everything I needed moved, therefore requiring me to pay more than double what I'd been quoted. Spoke very unprofessionally about how the workers would split the money and the bitterness involved while also requiring that I pay without one of the workers in the room so that he didn't see how much I was paying. Extremely unprofessional and uncomfortable. Complained and berated me for having "cheap" furniture that they needed to take apart, acting angry and annoyed that they had to move it because it was heavy. I was so visibly upset by him basically yelling at me for having things for him to move that he apologized saying that's just how he "operates," yet he continued this behavior throughout the day. Absolutely disheartened by this experience, never hiring anyone besides Two Men and a Truck again. If I hire you for a service, I expect to not be brought into or hear about your family issues, nor should I hear that you'd complained for hours about me and the task that I'd hired you to do from my roommate. Absolutely terrible. Wish I could give them zero stars.

I contacted this company to help moving several furnitures in my house. After going back and forth and signed an agreement, the company contacted me 90 mins before the appointment date and time they could not come and asked if they could reschedule. I asked them when they are available and their response was: "Honestly I'm booked all week I am so sorry". This is very unprofessional especially for not accommodating the customer need after signing agreement. There was no further explanation from the team. I can't comment on the quality of their work because I've not hired this company in the past. However, I don't have high hopes given lack of communication and accountability.

2 men arrived early but that was not a problem. I didn't want to tell them how to do their job but I knew this move of my furniture from the 1st floor to the 2nd floor was not going to work out well. They had no tools or tape measure and they admitted they were tired, my job for them was their second of the day arriving at my home at 1030. They were only here for 1 hr and 15 minutes. Most stuff went up smoothly. With the larger items I suggested taking off the railing and they also took off the door at the top of the stairs. They wasted time with trying to fit furniture before even measuring, that was a waste of time. When they needed tools they went out to their truck to get a flat head screwdriver and another trip to get a hammer, which took up more time. Other things to note is I mentioned they should have measured and one of the guys said I thought you did. Not my job, they did not go over what was going up even though I said there was items in 3 different rooms to go upstairs into 2 large rooms. These guys were frustrated as I was also. At the end I just wanted them gone. I spoke with their boss to settle the bill and had to ask them to put door back on. I was so annoyed with one of them he kept saying the bill is so much and would not let me talk about why I felt the bill was not accurate, he just kept talking over me. In a service job the customer is always right, they need to be more professional. I would not recommend or use their services again.
