I really enjoyed working with Kate to prepare for the GMAT! I started working with Kate after I had already been preparing for a couple of months but had been unable to hit the quant score that I needed. After meeting ~1x/week for 2 months, my overall score jumped from a 660 to a 710 and my quant score went up 6 points! Kate knows all of the OG problems extremely well (she was able to easily recommend different problems for me to solve based on my areas of weakness), and I loved using the TestCrackers materials during our sessions. She is also really knowledgeable about different test-taking techniques and strategies to help you get to the answer easier and faster. I would definitely recommend Kate as a GMAT tutor - she is supportive, easy to work with, and will help you meet your goal!

I will let the following quote from a parent's testimonial speak to this: "Aysenur is very knowledgeable, creative, professional, and very clear in her explanations. But more than that, she is an intuitive and perceptive teacher who knows when to challenge my daughter and knows when to provide direct guidance. We have only had two sessions, but my daughter already feels much more comfortable with the material and with herself as a math student. She's feeling great, thanks to this wonderful tutoring experience!" Working 1-1 with students allows me to a) discover deficiencies in their background knowledge that I can then remedy, b) try different approaches until I find one that is compatible with their learning styles.

    About

Hi! I'm offering tutoring sessions for elementary and high school students. Since graduating from University of Michigan, Ann Arbor in 2011, I've been traveling, playing music, a care worker, teaching piano lessons, tutoring, and trying to do good work in general! As a tutor, my subjects of focus are math and science. These are the subjects I was best at in school, and these are the subjects that schools seem to have the most trouble teaching. I believe this is because schools are mostly one person talking to a large group of people that all learn in different ways! Many students get left behind, and teachers don't have time to work one-on-one with all of them. One-on-one time with a student can make a world of difference. I have a car and can drive to the student's home. If you read this and think we'd be a good match, send me an e-mail and we can get to know each other a bit. I can put you in contact with references, etc. Thank you! I have a GPA of 3.8. I got 5's on AP Calculus BC and both Physics AP tests, scored in the 99th percentile in ACT math and in the 93rd percentile in ACT science.

    About

I am currently a cellular biology and biomedical engineering major at the University of Michigan Ann Arbor with a 3.8 GPA. I am an outstanding tutor who has a track record of success tutoring college level subjects at the University of Michigan Dearborn. These subjects include calculus, chemistry, biology, and physics. My business stands out because I personally know what it is like to struggle in school (which happened CONSISTENTLY) but also what it takes to succeed, not only in academics but in the professional world. Feel free to contact me as I have cheap and flexible rates compared with other tutors in my area. I typically have sessions 2-3 hours long. I love seeing the progress in my clients and their satisfaction after reaching one of their academic goals.

One of my greatest strengths as an educator is meeting each student's unique needs by developing a personal understanding of him or her. I achieve this by assessing each student as an individual and then I tailor the tutoring experience to fit their specific level and skill. Furthermore, I incorporate a variety of object demonstrations and enjoyable experiences into lesson plans which reveal a direct connection between academic work and daily life, and help to keep students motivated and interested.

    About

I am a University of Michigan faculty and have experience in teaching mathematics and science to students of middle and high school. I also teach at Math Olympiad every Saturday. Here, mathematics and science is taught with a difference, and students gain confidence and excel in mathematics and science skills.

    About

Students often experience those, "Ah ha!" moments during sessions, when long-held misconceptions or points of confusion are corrected and internalized. These are the moments when I feel most proud of the team effort to effectively relate and understand difficult concepts!

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good math tutor?

Math home tutors are available for any age student, from elementary school to postgraduate studies. Rates will vary based on the tutor’s background, education and experience. To find a good math tutor, first determine your learning goals. Do you need help understanding and completing homework assignments? Are you preparing for the math portion of a standardized test? Next, read reviews from current and former students. Find someone with proven success helping students achieve their goals. If you want help on an ongoing basis, decide what your budget is and identify the tutors who fall within your range. Ask if there are additional fees for travel, as some home math tutors include travel costs in their rates and others charge extra. Ask about session length and the tutor’s teaching style, and whether they also offer online sessions or group sessions. Finally, schedule a single session with each of the math tutors you think are best to see who is the best fit.

How much do math tutors cost?

Math is a subject that’s challenging for many students. Fortunately, home math tutors can help students excel in math by working with them in focused one-on-one tutoring sessions. The cost for math tutors varies based on the type of math, the expertise and experience of the tutor, and geographic location. Pricing may range between $40 and $100 per hour, depending on the math subject. As a rule, the more complex the subject matter, the more the math tutor will charge for the lessons. The cost reflects the math tutor’s advanced studies and the work required for them to be able to teach on the subject. Frequency can also affect costs. Students can buy packages of lessons for a lower cost per session than buying individually. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a geometry home tutor is $50-$60. The national average rate for an algebra home tutor is $40-$50 per hour. For generalized math tutors, the national average ranges between $40 and $50 per hour. More intensive standardized test prep studies and math tutoring average $70-$100 per hour.

How much does home tutoring cost?

Investing in home tutoring is an investment in your child’s future. Home tutors work one on one with your child to address their challenge areas and provide room for intellectual growth that may not happen in a busy classroom. The cost of home tutors depends on multiple factors including where you live, the tutor’s background and education, the subject matter, and how often the tutor comes. Test prep home tutoring is typically more expensive than single-subject tutoring. Here are some examples of average tutoring costs:

    • National average cost for an algebra home tutor: $40-$50 per hour.
    • National average cost for a French home tutor: $30-$50 per hour.
    • National average cost for a geometry home tutor: $50-$60 per hour.
    • National average cost for a math home tutor: $40-$50 per hour.
