Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a tiler during the COVID-19 pandemic?

To set up an appointment or consultation with a tiler during the COVID-19 pandemic, start by conducting an online search for tilers in your area. Ask if the tiler can conduct a consultation through a video call instead of a traditional site visit to limit exposure. It’s also wise to confer about the current state of the pandemic and ensure that it’s safe to complete the project now. If not, discuss postponing for another time.

How can I find out if a tiler is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

To identify essential service providers during the pandemic, visit your city or state’s government website to find a list of recommendations.

A list of national recommendations can be found at CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 webpage. This service lists 16 different types of essential infrastructure sectors that are approved to continue operation during the pandemic. But note not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Does a tiler need to enter my home?

If the tiling job is located in your house, the tiler will need access to your home. The exception to this would be if the job was taking place in an outdoor area like a backyard.

If a tiler does need to enter your home, take strong precautions. Sanitize all surfaces, avoid being in the same room and conduct payment using digital platforms. Discuss a safety strategy with tilers in your area beforehand.

Can I use digital payments to pay for tile installation, replacement or repairs?

Digital payment platforms are popular in a wide range of service industries, and many tile installment, replacement and repair professionals now accept them. Common platforms include PayPal, Zelle, Google Pay, Venmo, Square Cash and more.

Start with an online search for tile companies near you. Ask them if they accept digital payments and which types you can use. Then, put a strategy together to follow social distancing guidelines.

Do tilers offer remote or virtual services?

Because tiling is a manual, in-person job, it is not typically considered a remote project. But if you come across a profile that states the tile company is offering remote services, ask them what those services include.

What do you need to lay tile?

If you’re laying a new tile floor, you’ll likely need an assortment of tools and supplies, including (but not limited to):

  • Tile
  • Tile adhesive
  • Tile trim
  • Tile spacers
  • Underlayment
  • Sealer
  • Caulk
  • Level
  • Goggles
  • Gloves
  • Trowel
  • Carpenter’s square
  • Grout
  • Sponge
  • Tape measure
  • Etc.

If you don’t have all of the tools, equipment and skills necessary to lay tile in your home, consider hiring one of the best tile contractors in your area.

How long does it take to install backsplash?

The time it takes to install backsplash depends on the size of the area and the type of materials you’re using. But generally, it’ll take a few days to finish the project. Porcelain or ceramic tile may take less time than that, while very small glass tiles or complicated designs are likely to add time.

Chat with the best tile specialists to find out how long it will take to install a backsplash in your home.

Can you tile over tile floors?

Yes, you can lay tile over existing tile floors (or a backsplash). Although it’s generally best to pull up your old flooring, you can simply place tiles on top if your existing floor is in good condition.

Before you start, examine your tiles carefully for mold, cracks or unevenness. Provided none of these is an issue, you can begin laying your new tiles.

But if this is your first time laying tile — or if you want to ensure that the job is done right — save time by hiring a tiling professional near you

Can you tile over drywall?

Yes, it is possible to lay tile over drywall. If you’re looking to lay a tile backsplash in your kitchen, you can certainly do it yourself — but hiring a professional may save time.

Before you tile over your drywall, make sure the wall has a smooth surface with no bumps or cracks. Start by using a compound to seal up any crevices, then sand the drywall and clean up the dust. Then, lay a coat of primer on the drywall to get it ready for your tile.

I hired Hasan to replace a single tile in my kitchen. Many contractors would balk at such a small project, but I was pleased that I was able to get this taken care of! The tile was replaced and the grout color matched perfectly!

Manny was a pleasure to work with. Always did what he said. A rarity in today’s contractor world. He tiled a bathroom in my 1950 home that wasn’t the most square or level. Did a excellent job of leveling my floor for tile.

Manny is a very nice person and his price is extremely reasonable. For one person he is able to get a job done quickly and on time. But, with tile work a rush job equals not the expected outcome. He did our entire kitchen and was able to get it completed in two days. I feel like it should have been a 3 day job considering the amount of sq footage. The end product we ended up with looks amazing from far away, but once you are up close on it the flaws become very noticeable. We originally agreed that I would provide the tile and grout and he would provide the mastic. He showed up with the smallest container of mastic I have ever seen and ran out quickly. Luckily I had extra on hand, but ended up having to run and get even more on day 2. He does NOT use tile spacers so all the gapes in the tile are uneven. He also does not use a tile saw, but a free hand grinder. All of our corner cuts are terrible and show with the dark grout we used. He also used snapped tile in places which show too. The other point I need to make is Manny does not do a good job of following a pattern. He just randomly starts different rows and different lengths, and for someone who is OCD about these types of things the end product was not to my satisfaction. I tried pointing this out to him multiple times and he became very agitated. Cleanup was not great either and he used our nice towels to we let him borrow to pad his tile cutter that he was using on top of our $6K new quartz counters. I was excited to get this kitchen tiled for quoted $400, but his end quote of $700 and final product is reasoning for 3 star review.

I can't recommend Mid Ohio Contracting enough! They were able to repair some tile work in my kitchen and master shower and their work seamlessly flowed to the rest of the tile in the area. They were able to schedule me within a week of coming out for the initial consult. The value was incredible and was thousands of dollars less than the other quote i received. I will certainly call Mid Ohio Contracting in the future for any home repairs!

Manny installed tile in three of our apartments. He installed tile in the kitchen area, the main living area, the bathroom, and the closet. Manny showed up exactly when he said he would and finished the work within the time specified. He was very reliable in terms of getting the work done and working around other contractors. The bill was about 7% higher than the estimate but we discussed it and we felt that was very fair due to some unanticipated old carpet adhesive. The adhesive removal took several additional hours per unit. His attention to detail surpassed what we needed really, but at a very reasonable price. The tile is now probably the nicest part of the building. Thanks, Manny!

This team did a great job on tiling our fireplace and kitchen. We were quoted quickly, they picked up our materials, and got the job done in a day and a half. They were cognizant of us having a 5 month old baby and were very quiet while doing the install which didn’t disrupt our little one’s naps! The finished product turned out beautifully. We will definitely hire again for any future tiling needs.

Needed some tile done and responded quickly and did the job the next day! Went above and beyond because we had some demolition and water issues but soldiered through and didn’t charge more.

This guy is bu far one of the most unprofessional I've came across. I hired him to remove and replace old tile in my shower, remove old tiles in other parts of the bathroom, change out shower faucet and replace drywall. This job was to take 3 to 4 days. He told me he normally shows up between 9 and 10 and work until 5 or 6p some days. That was the first problem. He never showed up before 11:30, left at around 2:30 or 3p. Once day he worked until around 5 because I insist that I needed my bathroom done. This was day 4 on the job. He finished putting up the tile in the shower and a portion of the dry wall. This took him 6 days. Thus far he had not removed the old tile behind my toilet, my bathroom sink or replaced the drywall on that side. He told me he was not going to come on day 7 as he had to work so I should see him on day 8. On day 7 we attempted to use the shower for the first time and the pipe at the bottom completely flew off. It was shaking before as he didn't use an Allen key to tighten the pipe. He just put some glue around the outside to hold it in place which was insufficient. I also at that time noticed that he used a piece of plastic sealer to seal the tiles at the top of the shower. These were now falling off and I noticed that some of the tiles at the top were cut uneven which left huge gaps. He attempted to hide this unsuccessful with the plastic sealer. I texted him to let him know that the pipe flew off, and that he needed to replace the uneven tiles. He didn't respond. I waited for him to show up on day 8, day 9, called (he declined), text (no response). He didn't even have the balls to say he wasn't coming back, so I'm now left with jacked up tiles, a broken pipe in shower, unfinished drywall, and tiles on my back wall that now needed to be demolished. This guy is totally unprofessional, I don't usually write reviews, but, I've never experienced anything like this. I should have known he had no intentions of coming back as he took his tools on the last day he was there. I paid him half of the money, so I now have to find someone else to clean up his mess and finish the job. Might I add that he went into my closet upstairs, without permission to take out one of my bathroom hand towels to clean up the bathroom floor. I've never met a more unprofessional individual and I am one of the most lenient.
