I hired Jim to finish my basement, to do everything except trim work, painting, and carpeting. I had lowes install the carpet, I did the trim myself, and hired someone to paint with me to save some money. Jim did all the electric work, installing breakers, outlets, lights, all wire work. He was very professional and did excellent work. He had Bill, who did all the framing, drywall, sanding/mudding, tile work in the bathroom, install vanity, toilet, all doors. When i started priming the walls, i noticed some imperfections on the finishing work Bill did. I told Jim and Bill came the next day to fix any issues that were there. They were very aggressive giving me a great price on labor. They gave me a list of what materials were needed and i used a new lowes card to get 10% off everything. I could've had them get everything but I was trying to keep my costs down as low as possible. It's a little bit of work but if u don't mind doing the extras like that, it's worth the scratch. Other than them taking a little longer to finish then originally told (what contractor finishes on time anyway), they did a great job. I would definitely hire them again.

As a contractor by trade I expect professionalism, honesty and quality when I hire someone to work at my home.Jimmy not only met all those qualifications but surpassed them. After receiving outrageous estimates from some of the major name garage door companies Suffield garage doors was next, after meeting Jimmy he was hired before he even gave me a price (which was extremely more reasonable)Jimmy was quick, clean and kept his word on the price,no surprises.I could not be happier with my new garage doors and the quality of work and service I received.Great overall experience and 5 stars for Suffield garage doors -Matt Fela

First, I became very sick shortly after this job was completed and I completely spaced leaving a review until I logged back in nearly a year later to use this site for another job. My sincere apologies. The review I would have left is below. Contractor was great. Finished project quickly in spite of running into some unconventional construction in the wall that would have made it difficult for me or a less knowledgeable contractor to complete the job. He was friendly and communication ahead of the job date prevented any confusion. He let me know that if I had any issues with the work or if I would like the wires to be hidden within the wall, he would be happy to come back out and take care of it. Would absolutely hire again.

I accessed Thumbtack last week in search of a contractor that could replace the existing tile around my fireplace. My wife and I purchased some marble tiles a few weeks back to replace the existing tile with. We were struggling to find a contractor in our area that could complete the work with any level of confidence. The first few contractors we contacted were concerned about breaking the marble pieces while trying to cut them to fit the space. Thumbtack seemed like our last hope. After filling out the short questionnaire about the type of work that I was requesting, Rodney replied almost instantly. Not only did he reply, but he sent a very personalized response to me, addressing specific concerns about the job and even posing a few questions for me. Of course I replied right away and we were soon on the phone making plans for an in-home visit for an accurate quote. Rodney was very accommodating to my schedule. He offered to visit with me and my wife in the evening to give us his quote for the work. He was very friendly, very knowledgeable, and very polite. Rodney quoted us at a very competitive price - below most other quotes we had received. With a combination of his persone and his competitive price, we knew instantly that we wanted Rodney to complete this work for us. Rodney immediately made room for us in his busy schedule in order to complete the work "as soon as possible" as my original request stated. He quoted us on a Thursday night and started the work the next morning. I'm not sure that this is something that Rodney will always be able to do for his customers, but it was surely appreciated by my wife and I in this case. Rodney did a complete tear out and reinstallation project for my wife and over the course of three days. He completed the tear out and preparation on Friday, cut and placed all of the marble on the fireplace on Saturday, and finished grout and cleanup on Sunday. Rodney worked late into the day on Saturday, ensuring customer satisfaction and job completion by Sunday as originally planned. All the while, Rodney was very polite, very respectful of our time and space, and very tidy and thorough at the completion of the project. He made sure that there were no loose ends before leaving and ensured that my wife and I were happy with his work. He even offered to go above and beyond and complete further small services for us at no cost if we felt they were necessary to make the project more perfect than it already was. I would recommend Rodney to anyone in the Indy area that is looking for an efficient, knowledgeable, polite contractor that will surely get your job done the way YOU want it done. Rodney is not looking to rush through a job - he is working for his customers trust and a lasting relationship. He has certainly earned that with my wife and i. We've got several project ideas that we will be contacting Rodney about in the coming years. Thanks Rodney!

We got a renovation loan for the repairs on the house we just purchased. The bank had many hoops for our contractors to jump through. Danille was very professional in doing what needed to be done. We thank him for his patience and of course his excellent work.

I highly recommend Safe Guard Renovations and its owner David Rogers, we have worked with many contractors over the years, but Dave and his team were without a doubt exceptional! All of his staff was courteous, knowledgeable and efficient, they answered questions and concerns we had and made adjustments at the last minute. As a small business owner ourselves, we know how difficult it is to keep great employee's, Safe Guard and Dave were great and we will be recommending them and using them for a long time. Ed Wolf

Over the past year I have had many contractors in my home working a couple major projects. Brian is one who did great work, when he said he would and at the cost he quoted. He kept me informed along the way and even fixed a materials error I made while making purchases of supplies. I will hire him again, and again!

Work was Average. Me and contractor that was sent had dispute concerning sub-floor. The wall that was suppose to fixed was never fixed. I paid in full and moved on but overall wasn't satisfied. Unfortunately Calvin didn't perform service he sent his partner. Maybe experience would have been different if Calvin actually did the work.

We bought our home about a year ago knowing that the roof was old and that we would have to replace it relatively soon. I was hoping to wait until next year to replace it, but unfortunately the roof started leaking and next year was too long to wait. I contacted a big name company and they came out and quoted me a HUGE amount to replace the roof. I posted on Thumbtack that I was looking for a roof replacement quote and Dan Replied back right away saying that he could come out that evening and take a look at it. Dan showed up at our house and walked our roof in the cold and dark (he brought lighting) and told us right then and there what he would charge us to do the replacement. And the price he gave us was HALF what the big name company wanted to charge us! He even said he would come out the next day and tar up a temporary patch where he could tell the leak was coming from so that would hold us until he and his crew could get the replacement done. True to his word, he patched it all up for us. Dan kept in contact with us for the next 2 weeks until they could get out to do our roof - which we greatly appreciated. Dan and his crew got our roof done in two days and left our yard neat and clean. Dan even went above and beyond by removing an old chimney stack on the roof that we no longer wanted or used. Dan didn’t ask for a penny from us until after the job was completed. He is a fair and honest contractor that does exceptional work and was a pleasure to work with. We will definitely be calling him when we replace our house siding!

I have dealt with many contractors in my time but none as efficient and nice of a guy as Mark with Apollo Builders. He promised me a date, stuck to the date, and completed the work as promised. When the siding was done on the house, I couldn't believe my eyes. My old house had been transformed into a thing of beauty. I'd like to Mark and his crew for a wonderful job and if you need a good contractor, Apollo Builders is for you.

Contractor did not follow through with what he was committed to do and also over charged me based on quote under the guise that he had to "store" my items, which is not true. He also failed to listen to what I wanted and issues that I had. For example, I now have a cabinet that I wanted doors only to and had 5 drawers and now, to add to that, the door to the cabinet has been discontinued. I paid for MANY MANY things that were never delivered to me, and paid for MANY MORE things that I didn't need. I paid Ikea $4,200, of which I returned over $700 in items and had to purchase over $500 more (and still do not have a door for a large cabinet). Vendor failed to even stand by his responses to emails. I wanted to pay cash for the services rendered and he demanded credit card because he didn't want his son to have the cash? Just odd all around, I am sure there are better options out there. Luckily, the local Ikea has been more than gracious to address the issues I have had. If not for that I would have sued this contractor for breach and would have clearly won based on over 40 pages of email communications trying to get him to fix the issues. Don't walk, run, from this contractor.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

How do I plan a bathroom remodeling project?

If you’re stumped on how to plan a bathroom remodeling project, it pays to hire a designer. This is especially important if you’re changing your bathroom layout in any way. Designers create contractor-friendly drawings indicating exactly where each tile and fixture will be installed, down to the light switches. This investment might cost you $300-$500 but save you significant frustration and miscommunication, while ensuring you get precisely what you want.

If you’re going to do your own design, planning a bathroom remodeling project means being organized and planning ahead. Create a general outline of what you want and the budget you have. Identify the specific fixtures, tiles, paint and vanity you prefer. Get all this organized before requesting quotes from two to three reputable general contractors. Once you find the right pro, get a written contract outlining scope of work, materials that will be used, timeframe and payment schedule. Communicate clearly about when to order your materials so they are ready and waiting by the time the contractor gets the permits. Your job from here is to communicate clearly, pay the contractor as the work progresses, and enjoy your remodel when it’s done.

Where should I start when remodeling a bathroom?

Bathroom remodeling doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Before starting a bathroom remodel it’s crucial to know what you want and have a clear understanding of your maximum budget. If you’d love all marble fixtures but have $3,000 total, you will have to compromise. Being realistic about materials and money before you even contact a contractor will have you on the road to success. Here are some simple steps to follow in the planning stages of bathroom remodeling:

  • List your remodeling priorities in order of importance (e.g., 1. New shower head, 2. Replace flooring, 3. Install recessed lighting, etc.).
  • Calculate what you can realistically afford to spend on your bathroom remodel. Identify an “all in” price — meaning the absolute maximum you’re willing to pay, as well as what you’d prefer to spend.
  • Gather ideas from Pinterest about colors and finishes.
  • Research the costs of the materials and finishes you want and begin making choices about what is and isn’t possible to fit into your budget (once labor is included). If you’d like to stay under $10,000 total, but really love a $2,000 tub, plan to downgrade in other areas.
  • Request quotes from at least three reputable general contractors, share your vision and ideal materials, and work together from there.

How long should a bathroom remodel take?

With proper planning and a good general contractor, your bathroom remodeling project doesn’t have to take forever. The construction phase of the project will always vary based on your scope of work, the square footage and the condition of your bathroom under the surface layer. Inevitably an 80-square-foot master bathroom with major changes will take longer than a 25-square-foot guest bath undergoing a minor renovation. For a smaller bathroom, a facelift — the industry term for sprucing up the surface layer (such as paint, vanity, tiles or light fixtures) but keeping the existing footprint of the space — may take five to eight working days, as long as there are no surprises like mold waiting when the old vanity comes out. A more complex bathroom remodel that revamps the shower area (customizing the plumbing, installing tile and changing the shower door), updates the flooring and cabinetry, and adds new paint and new lighting could take anywhere from one week to three weeks. A full bathroom remodel that guts the room, changing the footprint and moving the electrical wiring and plumbing lines, could take four to eight weeks or more. To keep your bathroom remodel on schedule, have your materials ordered and waiting, and don’t make any change orders once construction begins. Planning is key to keeping a bathroom remodel on schedule.
