Julie and Andy were polite, friendly, and got the job done. They were also the only ones out of 3 different people (companies, off of Thumbtack) that called back, and showed up to give me an estimate to do the work. Had a concrete pad poured for trash cans and barren spots in yard filled in and seeded.

I needed help with a Mid-Month move from Dayton to Tampa in July '18. I read numerous horror stories on fly by night moving companies not showing up, holding furniture for ransom. movers showing up smelling or pot or alcohol, you name it I read about it. I also received quotes from other Movers in town that were 3 or 4 times more than the estimate I received from HELP. To further complicate the move, we were consolidating 2 houses into one. Gary the owner, came to both houses and we discussed Timelines, type of truck to be used( for a move like this Gary rented a larger truck from Penske), as well as overall costs for the move. The cost was much less than I was expecting and after reading the horror stories and bad reviews from other movers, I was expecting a surprise on quality or price at the end. Gary knows this business and knows what it takes to get the job done right. Despite issues with a Truck from Penske that put us behind by 18 hours, Gary showed up with a backup truck and got House # 1 packed on time with no issues. His team was professional, took care of delicate pieces, and made sure the load was packed securely. The next day, we tackled House # 2. All goods from House # 2 got loaded on the Penske Truck, and the two trucks were backed up end to end and all household goods were transferred from one truck to another. Gary personally supervised and managed the entire load out of the FL Bound Truck. Everything was securely packed and only one casualty was a nick in the rear corner of a large armoire which he adjusted on our invoice. Everything else arrived as packed, nothing broken, glassware, delicate items and paintings undamaged. We set delivery for Friday morning at 6:00 AM. His Team was waiting in my driveway and appreciated coffee and donuts. Unloading took about 4 hours, beds were set up, washer and dryer hooked up, and way too many boxes filled up the garage. My fault for bringing too much stuff. Team was totally professional and courteous at all times despite completing an 18 hour drive and sleeping for a few hours in their truck overnight. The surprise came at the end. The Final Invoice was exactly what I was quoted. Gary and his team came through on every portion of this move, every promise made was delivered on, and I could not ask for better service on this move. Gary I can only give 5 Stars you deserve 10 Stars. For those contemplating a Long Distance Move, pick a time during the middle of the month. A mover's busiest time is at the beginning or end of the month. Avoid Broker's who hand your belongings off to someone else who is the least cost mover, and any promises made don't count for anything. My household goods stayed on Gary's Truck and his Team handled things from end to end. And if things weren't right they knew they would answer to Gary. I read all of Gary's Reviews from beginning to end, even the few bad ones and I was impressed. Gary takes ownership and the Buck Stops with him!!! To Gary and Team I can't thank your enough for your help and Support and Excellent Service. Jim Gruber - Riverview, FL

I am over the moon with this company. Availability was amazing, they were prompt, they did the job better than any other moving company I have ever used, they wrapped my furniture and were so careful! They treated my furniture, and my home like it was their own. They let me know when they would be there, when they arrived and they were amazingly kind. AND they were cheaper than any other company I have used or asked for an estimate. I highly recommend this company.

I was very pleased with their customer service and quality. They were the lowest price I could find for moving a piano. They communicated at all steps of the way and the movers were very friendly. There was a mix up with the address they were given and it added a little time onto the trip, and though they charge by the hour, they didn't charge for that extra time. They also honored the price originally quoted to me, even though with traffic and the GPS mix up, the price should've been higher. I would definitely recommend this company for moving!

Marathon movers is a quality moving company at a great price. They all are understanding, ask for a "run of show" to know where to start, and are careful with your items. I recommend to have the house ready for when they come in, so the job goes smoother. The one reason I have not given five stars is because unfortunately they scratched the floor of the new house when dropping off one of the items.

All I can say is wow! I was very nervous to hire movers because I thought they were young and would milk the clock but they sure proved me wrong. We needed someone last minute for helping to move a large house and they were available and the best price around. They didn’t stop working the whole time, almost 9 hours on a very hot July day with some pretty heavy furniture. I was very very impressed. They don’t nickel and dime you like other companies. They were friendly and professional and did great work. They were a little late but nothing terrible and their hard work was SO greatly appreciated, I don’t know how we would have made the move without them! Thank you!!!!! 10 star rating if possible!

I had an excellent experience with Veritas moving from Cincinnati to Louisville. Nathan was very responsive, despite being on vacation, and the two movers who came were SO courteous and quick. They were clearly experienced - I never thought all my things would fit in a truck the size they brought but they managed to Tetris it all in beautifully. I would have never found them if not for Thumbtack, and their pricing and availability was much more competitive than the huge companies I’d contacted (Atlas, Champion, etc.). Thank you!!

I talked to 5-6 moving companies but only two of them actually sent someone out to give us an estimate. Andrews was more price competitive and I liked the reviews I read online about them. Our move date ended up getting juggled due to the closing schedule of all the other buyers involved. That was a semi-nightmare by itself. Andrews was able to get me on the schedule and spread my move out over two days when I found out we had to be out at closing! The guys who did the actual load out arrived 15 minutes early. We were scheduled for 4 hours for the load out and they were done in 2 1/2 hours! Same thing on the load in the next day. They arrived 15 minutes early and unloaded in 2 1/2 hours. Since they charge by the hour I was concerned about them taking their time. That was not a problem. They were total pros and it was a great experience for us. I would use them again but I don’t see us leaving this house! Highly recommended! It was a pleasure dealing with everyone at Andrews.

There is so much I can say about this company, so I will start off with "Thank you for making my BIG move even possible!" Working with Krystal and the moving crew was such a delightful experience! If I had a question, it was answered almost immediately, and no hidden "extra" costs that I have found in the past other moving companies! All my items were so carefully wrapped and packed, I was extremely impressed that nothing was broke, or misplaced, or any other thing that can go wrong when taking a chance on a moving company! And during the actual move, all my items where in order and best of all on time! With such a busy life schedule, kids, job... this was the best and most smart move on my part! And if I ever move again I will be calling this company! I would definitely rate this company with a 5 thumbs up! Thank you to all the crew members and especially Krystal for making my move possible! I couldn't have done it with out you... Thanks again!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do moving companies do?

Moving companies provide a range of services to help you physically move out of one residence and move into a new place. But moving companies can do so much more than just haul your belongings across town in a truck. The national average for moving company prices ($250-$350 per hour) reflects the range of services provided. Here are examples of all the ways moving companies can help:

  • Packing: Moving companies can pack your belongings for you. They typically charge a flat rate for both the box and the labor to pack the box. The more time-consuming the belongings are to pack, the higher the cost per box. For example, books could be $5 per box, linens $10 per box, and fine china and glassware $18 per box.
  • Specialty moving: Safely move a baby grand piano, a oversize aquarium, or other specialty items with the help of pro movers.
  • Storage: Many moving companies can store your belongings while you wait for a new home to be remodeled or closing of your new home to be finalized. If you’re moving long-distance, they often provide short-term storage free for a specific length of time, and a set rate after that (such as $60 per square cubic foot of storage space used).
  • Long-distance moves: No need to rent a trailer and move your things; a long-distance moving company can haul your belongings across the country for you. Typically they charge by the cubic foot for moves, with prices based on your destination.
  • Unpacking: Moving companies can even unpack your belongings for you after they have moved them. This is not as common, and will definitely increase the price, but can be helpful if you’re not able to tackle this task yourself.

How much does a moving company charge per hour?

When you’re ready to make a major move, it’s time to research moving companies’ prices. A moving company may charge on average anywhere between $25 and $100 per hour, per worker, for moving services. The price will vary with regional labor rates, local cost to do business, and the level of service the movers are providing. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a moving company is $250-$350 per hour. This price includes a range of pricing, from all-in service with four or more movers on site to standard hourly rates for one or two movers. Other factors that affect moving companies’ prices are packing, stairs (or elevators), and distance. For a full-service move, you pay movers to pack your belongings for you. You may pay for the cost of the moving boxes and an hourly rate per worker, and there may be additional charges for packing fragile items. Stairs will also add to your moving prices. Lifting and carrying boxes and furniture up and down stairs takes more time and creates more physical labor for the workers. Moving companies may charge flat rates for flights of stairs, such as $50-$70 per flight. A moving company may also charge a one-time fee for moving things via elevator, such as $75-$100. If parking is not accessible in front of your home or apartment building, there may also be an additional fee for the added distance to carry your belongings to the truck.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

How much does it cost to move a one-bedroom apartment across the country?

Professional movers can handle the hard work of moving your one-bedroom apartment across the country for you. You can determine what your move will cost by learning the rate your movers charge per cubic foot and how they factor distance into the total cost. Cross-country movers typically charge based on your belongings rather than apartment size because that determines how much work they will have to do. For example, a studio apartment that is crammed full of things will take more work and moving truck space than the contents of a three-bedroom apartment with very little furniture.

Cross-country movers may also have varying rates, depending on where in the country you are moving. For example, a company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. A one-bedroom apartment costs approximately $1,500 to move across the country.

How much does it cost to move across the country?

The national average cost for hiring cross-country movers is $1,490-$2,220. A number of factors can affect the cost. One factor is the distance you want to move. For example, an East Coast-based moving company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. Another factor is how many belongings you have. Most cross-country movers charge by the cubic foot.

The type of move you want is another consideration in cost. You can have your belongings moved exclusively and delivered on a set day, or you can opt for a consolidated move, which is less expensive. In a consolidated move your belongings are stored and transported with the goods of other customers who are moving to your general vicinity during the same general time frame as you. Your belongings should arrive within a one- to two-week window, rather than on a set day. If you want the cross-country movers to pack your belongings for you, the cost will also increase.
