I highly recommend Barbara's class on manners for dogs. It was very informative and not ridged as some other classes. My dog learned the basics, which every dog should know to be safe. I also learned about grooming and the nutritional valve of different dog foods, which was very eye opening. It is a very good class and I have already recommend it to several of my friends and new dog owners. Barbara is very knowledgeable and has years of experience with dogs. If a dog is not responding to a certain command, she can come up with a different way to get the dog to do as you want. It was a very good learning experience for me and my dog.

Jessica, owner of Downtown Dog, is a very professional, knowledgeable, and friendly trainer. Her facility is impeccably clean and comfortable. Jessica has trained my dog Sam (and me). Sam has also had successful play dates (with other dogs) at Downtown Dog and boarding sessions. Jessica is very accommodating in scheduling training sessions. I would highly recommend Jessica and her knowledge of dogs and dog training.

I had an excellent experience when I took our dog Minnie to Basic Puppy School at Top Dog Training. Merit Day was very knowledgeable about the different breeds in the class and she shared that knowledge with the class. In addition Merit was an excellent instructor and very patient in working with everyone in the class. Merit was also willing to take time to work individually with you when needed. Minnie learned a lot in the class and I would certainly recommend Top Dog Training to anyone. I plan to take Minnie through the next level of training with Merit Day.

About

We love all creatures. I say creatures because it better encompasses those we care for from day-to-day. These are pets outside the traditional scope or just creatures who their people consider more companion and friend than anything else and we don't want to diminish that sense. And then of course, you have livestock, etc but many of them are very special. Have you ever noticed the connection between a kid and their horse? That is magic and the horse may be "livestock" to an outsider, but it isn't. Creatures seemed most appropriate. Also, we have combined over 100! years experience with creatures of all kinds. I couldn't believe it when I added it up for this. We both brought home pocketfuls of lizards, frogs, etc. We patched up hurt animals we found. We always had lots of different creatures on our farm so learned hands on. We both have experience as veterinary technicians though we do require a veterinarian's name on file in case of an emergency. We both handle training for dogs, cats, etc backed with many years experience. We are also both accomplished riders in the Western style and have given many lessons over the years.

About

We are currently the top-ranked dog trainer in the sate of Oklahoma with 31 five-star reviews. We teach obedience, off-leash obedience, and manners, and our goal is to help anyone and everyone enjoy his/her dog more! We take unruly dogs and turn them into well-behaved companions that people can take with them anywhere and everywhere either on or off leash. Don't put your dog on Craigslist! We can help! We have four trainers who do a variety of different things. We teach group classes. We do private lessons and board and trains (doggie boot camp where we take your dog and train it). Half of what we do is dog training and the other half of what we do is human training! Just like most of our dog trainers who don't have the ability or knowledge to do their own fences (except for Robert), most people don't know how to train their own dogs! Sure the rest of us could get on YouTube and buy a book on building a fence, but we probably aren't going to do it very well compared to the company that builds 200-300 fences a year. Here at Tip Top K9, we are that company who builds 200-300 fences a year, except that we don't build fences. We train dogs! Just like the company that builds fences is going to build with more excellence than an amateur, we are going to train your dog with a greater level of excellence than someone who has never trained a dog before. This obviously comes at a cost, and I will be honest that we are not the cheapest dog trainers. We are not the most expensive in the state, but we are the highest-ranked trainers. Our prices average between $400-$3,600. Please call us or e-mail us with more information so that we could meet you and your dog and see if we have a plan that would fit your situation!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How old should a puppy be for training?

Dog training shouldn’t wait until you’re having behavior problems. If you get a new puppy, start from the beginning with professional training to give both you and your puppy the tools you need for a healthy relationship. Dog training is as much about teaching the owner how to interact with their new dog as it is about the dog learning to behave. Puppy training can start as early as eight weeks old. Trainers who offer puppy training programs may works specifically with dogs between the ages of 8 and 18 weeks old. Trainers can teach owners about potty training and how to deal with accidents, working with separation anxiety, and training your pooch out of destructive behaviors like chewing, biting and demand barking. Puppies will start to learn to walk on-leash and other basic skills.

In addition to behavior training, socializing your puppy is an important part of dog training. Socializing your dog means they become comfortable and confident in a variety of settings and have a great foundation for becoming a well-adjusted adult dog. After your puppy has had the proper vaccinations, you can start to introduce it to a variety of different dogs and people in safe settings.

Which dog training method is best?

The best type of dog training for both you and your dog depends on the outcomes you hope to achieve. If you want your dog to learn agility training, go to someone who specializes in those techniques. Regardless of whether you want your dog to learn basic behavior or competitive-level tricks, the majority of dog training is actually about training the owner how to communicate with their dog. Most professional dog trainers agree that a model of training based on positive reinforcement breeds a happy, healthy, well-adjusted dog. The alternative to positive reinforcement training is using force or aggression techniques like physical punishment or shock-collar training to get the dog to do (or not do) a behavior. While the dog may learn how to behavior as you direct, it is also learning to communicate with force and aggression, and will in turn use those behaviors on other dogs (or people) that are smaller or weaker than it is. Before signing up with a dog trainer, meet with the trainer and ask for references. Watch the trainer interact with your dog, and make sure they treat your dog with patience and firm kindness. Ask them questions about their training methods:

  • What type of training methods do you use?
  • What is your background and training, and how did you become a dog trainer?
  • How long do you expect that we will work together before we achieve the results I’m after?

How long does it take to train a puppy?

Dog training depends on the dog and how much homework the dog owner is willing to put in. Puppy training is similar to dog training in that the onus of the work depends on the owner learning new ways to interact with their dog. For a quick crash course, you can opt for a single, two hour smart-start puppy training consultation to teach you the ins and outs of being a new dog parent. You can learn how to manage potty training and what to do if the puppy experiences separation anxiety. As long as you’re willing to work on dog training a little bit each day, your puppy will quickly learn these new behaviors. If you’re not confident about training your puppy yourself, you can enroll in a 6- to 8-week puppy training course, with weekly lessons touching on everything from bite control to obedience. Puppies usually need to be at least three months old for group training classes. If you want more intensive one-on-one work, you can opt for private lessons. Some behavior problems can be resolved in one session if the dog owner learns and can implement new skills. In the case of more serious issues, 3 to 10 private sessions can typically correct challenges.
