We hired H&H Outdoor to build an outdoor fireplace, grill counter, patio and new shade bed. We couldn't be happier with the finished product, the construction process and clean up. Mike was an excellent communicator. He personally stayed on top of the job, constantly checking in with phone calls, not just emails. We really appreciated that. We contacted several landscapers for this project. Mike was the first to quote a price and had the best price for the job. He also hung in there while we made our decision! The job got done on time despite the unusual wet fall we had in Oklahoma. The crew did an excellent job cleaning up the yard and Mike replaced sod over the construction area. We highly recommend H&H Outdoor for your next landscape project.

Brad poured a back porch and a base for a built in brick grill and they are flawless. It was a tough job because all of the cement had to be carted to the backyard but his crew did an excellent job with very little impact on my property.

Michael and his team did an amazing job on our project. It was a large one: install french drains, replace mulch with stone in front and back flowerbeds, extend the back flowerbeds, build a custom pergola and design and install a custom waterfall on our new pool. He and his crew were professional, meticulous in their work and answered all of our questions along the way. They were even good with our dogs! They worked hard to help us create the backyard oasis we were looking for, and it is more than a job well done.

Gabe doesn't promise anything he can't deliver. He takes pride in his work and it is reflected in the quality and craftsmanship of everything he does. His first project for us was building a pergola to add to our deck. We get harsh west sun and wanted something open, but also something that added some shelter. We use all the time. It's better than we ever expected. Our next project was a major remodel of our master bathroom. I smile every time I walk in. Everything from the tile to the shower to the tub to the sink. He did a fantastic job. Gabe hires great subs, when necessary, and they are equally as professional. He helped us find a reliable painting contractor that did an excellent job painting our house, and found another crew to refinish our kitchen cabinets. We are very pleased and will definitely hire R Shields Construction for our next project(s)! --Dana Box and Lucy Dolman, Sand Springs, Oklahoma

From start to finish it was a fantastic experience. In just under a month, Clere Enterprise Group built and installed a 3-shelf microwave cabinet that matched the style and color of existing cabinets for me. Michael consulted with me on the best place for the cabinet considering my future renovation plans. There were a couple of delays, but they were totally understandable and caused me no issues. He more than made up for it by keeping me informed and delivering a high quality product. He even fixed a couple other hinges on existing cabinet doors. I am extremely pleased with the professional, quality craftsmanship. I highly recommend this business and will be using them again!

Gunner's tile man, Jose, along with Camille who provided design guidance, completed my kitchen back splash tile project. Although it took a couple days longer than estimated, they did a great job and we will enjoy our kitchen for years to come.

Our church needed someone to do a large platform build-out. Keith did the design work for us, suggesting improvements that we hadn't even considered. The finished work seamlessly integrated into the old platform. The project was completed on time and on budget. We will definitely be using Choice Contracting again. I don't have a single negative word to pass along.

Zack has performed a wide range of work for me from as simple as changing light bulbs I couldn't reach, repairing door knobs and some assistance with yard work. He also cleared out my storage building and things I needed removed from my garage and hauled the debris to the disposal site. He assisted in the demolition of my kitchen to make way for a remodel. He built a large shelving system in my garage for storage. He has also done caulking and general maintenance I have asked of him. He also found a buyer for a car I no longer needed.

Brandan is awesome! We moved to Bartlesville in April 2015 after buying a foreclosed home built in the 50's. Brandan helped us from day one with a complete demo and rebuild from the studs, rafters and joists. It was a huge project. He replaced all our plumbing with new PEX piping, and installed new drainpipes in the entire house. He installed fresh drywall on walls and ceilings and completed the mudding, taping, and sanding. He put in new subfloors, added 2 new walls, closed off a doorway and created a walk thru from the kitchen. He helped us install all new cabinets and also built several custom cabinets that saved us money. He installed all new ducting for our new HVAC and a new whole house fan in the attic. He installed a complete new bathroom for us. The list of what he did is endless! I can't remember it all! We have purchased a second property and plan to build a rental home on it. Brandan will be totally involved in the entire project from start to finish. He also is going to help us put on a new roof on our large detached garage and build a deck off the bedroom and install french doors leading to it. Hire Brandan, you will be happy! Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who is a carpenter and what do they do?

Carpenters are skilled craftsmen who build things out of wood. Depending on what the carpenter builds, they may be referred to by various names. A framer is a carpenter who puts up the framing on a house. A trim or finish carpenter installs the finishing touches of prefabricated or custom trim and detail work once a house has been built and the walls are up. A furniture maker or woodworker builds furniture — such as tables, beds and dressers — out of wood. A cabinetmaker is a carpenter who builds custom and semi-custom wood cabinets. If you’re having a home built or remodeled, your general contractor will either provide or subcontract the carpentry work for the framing, cabinets and trim. You can hire a carpenter directly to update the trim in your home, build you a piece of custom furniture, or repair or replace your wood cabinets.

What does a landscape contractor do?

Landscape contractors work from outdoor architectural or design plans to build and install hardscaping or softscaping for the client, much as a general contractor uses architectural designs to build a house. Landscape contractors are experts in soil drainage, grading, hardscaping (installing concrete paths and retaining wall, building ponds, etc.), and planting. They have heavy equipment such as excavators and tractors to prepare the land as needed.

Some landscape contractors are also landscape architects or landscape designers. The titles can be compared with those in home construction: A building or landscape architect must earn a specialized architecture degree and pass an exam to have a license. A designer — whether an interior designer or a landscape designer — does not usually require a license to work. Landscape contractors are not required by law to work from plans designed by a landscape architect, so you may work directly with the landscape contractor to specify the work you’d like done. The national average cost for large-scale landscaping projects is $10,160. Pricing can vary greatly depending on the project scope, materials and design.

How do you find a good landscape architect?

Hiring a landscape architect is an investment in your home. Landscaping can reduce water bills, improve your home resale value, add to your daily living experience and significantly boost curb appeal. A landscape architect will draw the designs for your new landscape; you’ll want to hire a landscape contractor to carry out the plans. Many companies provide design-build landscaping services, with a company architect creating plans for your vision and the landscape contractor executing the vision. With the proper academic background and licensing, a person can be both landscape architect and landscape contractor. Here are a few tips for finding a great landscape architect:

    • Research online portfolios and find several landscape architects whose work interests you.
    • Read online reviews of client experiences.
    • Research whether the landscape architects you are interested in are currently licensed and in good standing with the licensing board, and check whether any complaints have been issued against them. Each state will have their own searchable database. For example, you can search for California landscape architects via the state’s Department of Consumer Affairs.
    • Request bids from your selected landscape architects.
    • Hire the one you like the most, taking care to have a clearly written contract outlining scope of work.

    Do carpenters build houses?

Carpenters are trained to work with wood. That means that any part of your home that is built of wood is very likely to involve a carpenter. Framing carpenters will put up the wood that makes up the bones of your home. If you’re having a wood floor installed, it may be done by a carpenter — although being a carpenter is not a requirement to install flooring. Trim, baseboards, wainscoting and any other detail work is typically installed by a finish carpenter. The wood boxes of custom cabinets will be built and installed by a carpenter.

Although all of these components in your new or remodeled home are built by carpenters who specialize in building things with wood, a general contractor typically oversees construction of the entire house. If the general contractor is also a carpenter skilled in all these areas, they may well construct your entire home. More often, the general contractor subcontracts out the various building stages to different individuals, including carpenters.

What should you look for when hiring a landscaper?

Landscaping can be costly — though it usually pays off in curb appeal and home resale value — so finding a landscaper who is worth the investment is important. When hiring a landscaper, look for proven success with the type of results you want. For example, if you know you want a drought-tolerant yard, research websites, reviews and portfolios that showcase beautiful drought-tolerant yards that the landscaper has installed. In addition to relevant experience, you’ll want to find a landscape contractor who has good client reviews. Good communication skills are another important quality in a landscape contractor, since everything from plant selection to hardscape installation needs to be discussed and agreed upon. A landscape contractor who is reliable, easy to understand and able to listen to what you want will help make the process seamless and enjoyable.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
