Bryan Trent calls himself a "Handyman"--however, while both handy, as well as a man with tremendous integrity and character, he exceeds this label. Bryan came to us on the heels of four different construction-remodelers, providing an excellent comparison pool. In short, Bryan Trent has now been finishing our 1200 square foot remodel, and we have hired him as our permanent Handyman. More specifically, allow me to describe his particular skills and abilities for others considering his employment. 1) His construction skills are outstanding--we have been most impressed with the mantel, completion of our deck, mirror trimout, and hardware mounting on decorative wooden panels he made; 2) He can and will do most anything asked of him. If he is not heavily skilled in an area, he finds resources that prep him to complete special projects, such as the installation of a screen door on double panel patio doors, raising our treadmill to proper height with a wooden block design, and trimming the kitchen with retro moulding, to name a few; 3) While not a licensed plumber, he has skills in this area as well. As stated, he can fix most anything; 4) He took his time to insure high caliber work, respected our property (and we are extremely particular about this!...e.g., he wears "booties" over his shoes when walking on our new carpet)--and our time. 5) He offers a very fair price. After numerous contractors and construction personnel, we would, and have, hired Bryan Trent as our "Handyman," but he is really a contractor, carpenter, plumber, and whatever meets your needs. While working for you, he will afford you respect, listen to your needs, communicate with you concerning your wants, and give you his very best effort. We could not be more pleased to have found and hired, Mr. Bryan Trent via Thumbtack. If you do the same, he will not dissapoint.

These young men took very good care of me. My new TV was mounted above my fireplace, and it looks great. They even carried furniture in from my garage, threw away the boxes for me, cleaned up their mess, and made sure my sound system was hooked up. Definitely above and beyond service.

We just had a baby and needed to be able to mount our flat screen tv before our daughter was able to crawl around and pull the tv on top of her. We have built in bookshelves and wanted to convert one into a space where we could mount the tv. Matt did a beautiful job of opening up the space while maintaining the historical feel of the built ins. Matt also took on some additional electrical work to add an outlet and run cable lines. Matt was very professional and considerate.

He did an excellent job! Was very friendly and knew exactly what he was doing. I would highly recommend him if you need someone quick, reliable, and affordable! I had my 55'' flat screen T.V. mounted on the wall. He asked me where I wanted the T.V. and asked me how I wanted it positioned. He even provided me with a cable cord at no extra expense. He made a little mess from drilling through the dry wall, but he offered to clean it up. If I ever need a handy man I would use him again!

Mr. White was extremely helpful when I contacted him about hanging a couple televisions. He was very polite and professional. I have never had a tv mounted to my wall before so I was a little nervous about the process and whether it was a safe option with kids in the house. But Mr. White patiently answered all my questions and concerns. But the thing I liked and appreciated the most was the way he talked to me on the phone and his professional behavior when he came to my house. It was obvious from all my questions that I am not very tech or home improvement savy. This was definitely not something I knew very much about. He not only explained things in a clear, easy to understand manner but he was also very patient and respectful. He did not speak to me like I was an idiot or a child. There have been many times I have hired a handy man or other type of home contractor or gone to a mechanic and when I have tried to ask questions they either talked to me like I was an idiot or a child. I fully expected this time to be no different and was pleasantly surprised when Mr. White proved to be a cut above the rest. I have already recommend him to several of my friends and they have been just as happy with not only his work but his exceptional customer service and professionalism. If you are looking for help you should definitely give him a call.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

      Who wall mounts TVs?

Electricians, handymen and TV installation specialists may all provide television mounting services. The person who does the mounting should be qualified and knowledgeable about basic construction concepts as well as working with audiovisual cables. In general, no specialized certificates are required to provide television mounting services, but as always do your diligence and make smart hiring decisions.

It’s important to find an experienced professional who will ensure the TV wall mount meets building code. Most regions have fire codes that don’t permit high-voltage power cords behind walls (low-voltage wires like HDMI and video cables are generally acceptable). A basic wall mount on drywall may take approximately one to two hours, while more complex mounts on brick or stone with hidden cables can take three or more hours. If you need more electrical outlets installed near your entertainment system, you may want to hire an electrician. Check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

What should you do with a broken LCD TV?

Nationally, the average price range for TV repair is $60-$90. LCD TV repairs are one of the most common TV repair requests. A liquid crystal display (LCD) TV uses the same technology as your smartphone and most computer screens. Images are created on an LCD screen by electric currents that pass or block light through liquid crystals that are encased between two polarized, glass-like sheets. LCD TVs can be very thin and are relatively affordable, making them one of the most prevalent types of TV on the market. If you have a broken LCD TV, it can probably be repaired. Common problems that can be repaired include a blank screen, sound issues, power problems and digital connection problems. Here is one example of LCD TV repair cost:

      • 55-inch Samsung LCD TV repair: $150, including parts and labor
        • The LCD was intermittently powering up and powering off. The main circuit board was removed and replaced.

Can you fix a flat screen TV?

Yes, you can usually fix a flat screen TV. Whether you have a plasma, LED, OLED, HDR, HD or even LCD, TV repair pros can repair your TV. Flat screen TVs are expensive, and when they stop working it can make your heart stop. But TV repair technicians have advanced along with TV technology and are equipped with the proper tools and training for major and minor repairs. If your flat screen is too massive to transport, most repair companies have pickup and drop-off service. For the most common problems, TV repair pricing might range between $175 and $200 on average. Here are examples of the most common problems:

      • Power problems: The TV won’t turn on or will not stay on once started.
      • Digital problems: All connections are in place but you’re not receiving any signal.
      • Sound problems: There is no sound, the volume doesn’t respond to attempts to raise or lower it, or the volume is inconsistent.
      • Screen problems: The TV is on but there is no picture.

How much does it cost to mount a TV?

Elevate your home style with television mounting services. The national average price for television mounting services ranges between $100 and $130. Factors that can affect cost are the material of the wall you want the TV mounted on, whether you want the wires hidden, and any additional entertainment system connection you desire. It probably costs more to mount a TV on brick, stone or concrete than on drywall or plaster due to the added labor required to drill holes. For example, a company may charge an additional $99 to mount a TV on a brick wall. Here are some examples of average costs for television mounting services:

      • Basic TV wall mount: $40. Does not include bracket, device connection or strip management.
      • TV wall mount: $119. Includes bracket, mounting services, strip management system (for concealing external wires), and connection of all entertainment devices.
      • TV wall mount with wires hidden inside wall: $139.
      • Installation of additional electrical outlet: $65.
      • TV wall mount over fireplace with wires hidden: $179-$249.
      • TV wall mount and up to 5 speakers wall-mounted with hidden wires: $399.

Can a TV be mounted above a fireplace?

You may be able to mount your flat screen TV above your fireplace for a more streamlined look in your living room. In fact, TV mounting professionals can hang your flat screen TV flush with a wall or from a tilting or full-motion bracket mount in any room in your home. A tilting or full-motion mount may be the best option above a fireplace so you can tilt the TV down for the best viewing angle. Whether the wall above your fireplace is brick, drywall, concrete, stone or plaster, most television mounting services can accommodate your needs. Hardier wall surfaces like concrete or brick will require more labor and expertise to mount, and will likely have a higher price range.

If you want your AV and cable wires hidden in the wall, you will also pay a higher price due to the added time and skill to properly drill the holes and run wires. Before mounting your TV above your fireplace, consult with the manufacturer about necessary distance from heat sources. If the space above your fireplace gets too warm, another location could be better for the longevity of your TV. Your television mounting services may take between one and two hours, or more depending on your home theater setup.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
