How much are singing lessons?

Singing lessons cost $50 per hour, on average. Hourly rates can range anywhere from $40-$80. However, some vocal instructors may charge flat rates or offer packages. They may also offer 30-minute lessons for a lower price. Or, they might require monthly tuition for ongoing classes. It depends on the voice coach.

Contact vocal instructors near you to get a sense of how much singing lessons cost in your area.

How can I find a good voice teacher?

Use Thumbtack to find a good, top-rated voice teacher near you. With Thumbtack, you can view the teachers’ profiles, read their client testimonials and check their ratings. To ensure you hire the best instructor, ask them questions about their credentials and success with other students. You should also get cost estimates from at least three instructors before you make your decision.

What is a good age to start vocal lessons?

Whether you’re a novice or experienced singer, it’s never too late to start taking vocal lessons.

If you’re thinking about signing up your child for voice lessons, keep in mind that some instructors recommend waiting until their voice settles after puberty. Talk to voice coaches near you to find out if now's the time for you (or your child) to start taking lessons.

What are singing lessons like?

Every voice coach may have a different style of teaching, but here are a few things you'll likely experience during a singing lesson:

  • Explaining to the instructor what you want to improve on.
  • Going through a few breathing and riff exercises.
  • Receiving constructive feedback and criticism from the instructor.

Before your first voice lesson, you can ask your instructor what you should expect and how to prepare.

Our 5 year old daughter started lessons with Jana 3 weeks ago. Jana is very energetic and keeps the lesson moving for a 5 year old. She incorporates all the elements of music into her lessons such as rhythm, melody, voice, etc.. She comes well prepared and my daughter loves her lessons.

Greta is a wonderful teacher. First off, let's talk about her music skills and music experience and her people skills: She excels in all areas. Next, from the perspective of my own lesson-to-lesson experiences: I look forward to each sessions and am inspired by her and what I am learning. What more can you ask?

Jana is a fantastic and enthusiastic teacher. She is innovative and always coming up with new ideas to help my 5 year old learn piano. We miss having her come to our house for lessons, but she has a fantastic music room and my daughter loves discovering all the instruments. Jana uses a variety of instruments in her instruction, so lessons are more than just piano, they also create an in depth understanding of music theory.

My son is learning so much more than the basics of piano from Shannon and developing the love of music and creativity besides just playing notes. He's 8 and just starting lessons.

Aaron provides unique guitar instruction, meeting my son at his entry point and interest level. Each lesson is fun. Aaron balances traditional instruction with other methods. My son is learning pieces of music theory, the science behind music, and details about his instrument, all while learning to play. I highly recommend this teach.

Jana is an excellent instructor. I have been playing for many years, and I was not sure how useful lessons would be. She has shown me where I was missing things like music expression, awareness of chords and how to break down those difficult parts of songs. Her musical knowledge is amazing. She is fun, amiable and patient. I highly recommend her.

Jana is a total inspiration! She is very accepting of where I am musically and provides a total balance with theory, playing, and fun! It is apparent that she is quite adaptable to specific students learning styles. She was very open to every style of music. I felt completely encouraged and couldn't wait to practice after my lesson. Truly a gifted teacher as well as musician. Thank you Jana!

I’ve been taking piano lessons with Shannon at the Fellowship Music & Arts Academy once a week for 3 months now and everything has been fantastic. Shannon uses his decades of experience in the music industry to help teach you things you can use right away to play songs, understand music theory, or anything else you want to learn. He has adapted his teaching style to fit me specifically and I’m learning way faster then I thought I would have. If you want to learn an instrument. This is the place you should go. Easily the best music teaching in the Portland area.

Evan is an excellent guitar teacher! Lessons are always fun with a perfect balance between music theory and practice. He is extremely informative and helpful when it comes to tricks and techniques to work on to improve my skills. He is really flexible and can come to my house for lessons when I can't make it out to his. I'm exited to continue working with Evan and I would recommend him to anyone looking to learn how to play the guitar!

I am so happy to have found Kris as my daughter's piano teacher! She is 8 years old, had some introductory, minimal piano lessons at a summer camp last year so basically a beginner student. We started once-a-week lessons in January and 4 months later...L loves playing the piano! She plays when she is getting ready for school, she plays when she gets home from school. I have to remind her about the week's lesson but more importantly, she is experimenting and enjoying making music and this is encouraged by Kris as well as the fundamentals. I have seen her confidence grow, be proud of her development, and practice towards a goal. Since the lessons, when she listens to music she sometimes tries to play the chords or mimic playing it while we are in the car. I can tell she is thinking about how she could play songs she enjoys. Wow! Kris is patient, focused on the student, provides clear guidance and tailors the lessons to her level. For example, if she needs more time to practice a newer concept, he understands this. He also challenges L to stretch her ability a bit each week which is perfect for her personality. He has a calm, positive, and encouraging presence. I am so appreciative of his dependability and flexibility to make up a lesson the two times we weren't able to make our scheduled lesson due to scheduled events. It's clear he cares about the consistency of her lessons/practice and is reasonable about the occasional scheduling hiccups in families. I highly recommend Kris!

Having Jana as a teacher has been a wonderful experience. I used to hate piano, but now I am excited for my lesson every week. Instead of teachers that make you do what they want, Jana gives me options. We tried jazz, baroque, pop music and more. She lets me use her own piano books and gives specific tips. Jana has taught me so many different areas of music. We also have fun. She always comes with a smile on her face. She always comes when we need her to(even on short notice.) Jana teaches piano theory, technique and music (of course!) When we did pop music, she bought the song I was playing on I-Tunes just so that she could help me with it even better. Jana has without a doubt, been my favorite piano teacher ever!

Started lessons with Maxime after initial trial sessions with several instructors. He stood out for his knowledge, content, focus on teaching, and ability to adapt his style and approach to the individual student. I've never been so comfortable being pushed out of my comfort zone on areas of music and guitar playing where I know I'm weakest. His rates are also a great value. Top notch, all around.

Jana is amazing with my son, who is 5 years old and has Down syndrome. He's always responded enthusiastically to music and rhythms, so we were excited but a little bit apprehensive to see how he'd respond to the "structure" of a lesson. Jana was incredible: she moved from one concept to another quickly, but in a way he could follow 100%. She's really incorporated "play" into learning, and we couldn't be happier.

I found Jana after sending out an APB for a piano instructor with experience teaching brain-damaged students. Run-of-the-mill lessons just weren't cutting it for my daughter, who has mild cerebral palsy. I'd been heartbroken to see the spark go out of my kid, who has so much music in her heart but but was burning out on the old routine of drilling scales and following the dancing elves. Though well intentioned, our previous teachers seemed to feel they weren't giving us our money's worth unless they nagged us to practice every day and perform in a recital every term. (Not that I have anything against daily practice and recitals, but they were just the wrong approach for this physically tentative child, who was already overloaded with special ed and physical therapy.) Thankfully, things began to look up when I read Jana's proposal. Not only was it clear that Jana had a working knowledge of neuromuscular disorders, but more importantly she "got" that I was trying to enrich my kid's artistic soul without adding to her stress level. I must confess that, even in spite of the wonderful written proposal, I was nervous leading up to the first lesson; and, given our previous experience, so was my daughter. But within minutes of Jana's arrival the house was ringing with music and laughter. Of course, Jana's enthusiasm and easy nature won my daughter over instantly. But behind the fun it was clear to me that a great deal of preparation and thought had gone into the lesson. Jana had combed my daughter's Walkman playlist for a catchy song with a straight-forward chord progression that my daughter could play along with on an electronic keyboard that a musician friend has been storing in our basement. Jana brought a portable boom box and a list of program codes for our keyboard. Within minutes my child was producing genuine, "cool" music. No more dancing elves! At the risk of sounding maudlin, my daughter and I actually wept for joy after her first lesson with Jana. It was such a relief, after a year of tedious school bureaucracy and occupational therapy, for this child to once again feel that she was creative, talented and in control. We are now two months in, and my daughter still looks forward to every lesson. I've even begun to catch her practicing on her own, without prodding, just for the sheer pleasure of it. When Jana submitted her original proposal to me, she had suggested that at some point my daughter might like to jam with school friends. As lovely as that sounded, I was skeptical at the time, because my daughter's friends are fairly experienced musicians, and when they had invited her to play in the past she'd expressed terror at the thought. So you can imagine my surprise and joy when, out of the blue, my giggling kid bragged to me the other day that she was working on a tune to play for her friends AND (the ultimate sign of kid confidence) mulling over potential band names! I wish you and/or your child the same joy. Hire Jana--she is one in a million!

I have been in choirs and in various other musical settings for 12 years and have experienced many different teaching styles. When I initially started individual voice lessons, I was with an instructor who had a "one teaching method, fits all" approach to teaching. After about 4 months of lessons, I gave up and began looking for a new instructor... someone who would identify my weak points and help me develop a stronger, more balanced voice. After many, many initial interviews, I was very discouraged... until I met Emily. Emily invests in her students. She came up with a daily vocal routine specifically tailored to me and remained in constant communication with me about any questions I had. Not only is she continuously helping me identify my struggles and build technique but she also has taken the time to show me that I have many options of making it as a serious musician. Because of her, I am in the process of re-evaluating my whole academic plan. I am so grateful to have found such an amazing, talented, and skilled instructor! I am learning so much from her continuously!

I really liked the instructor Western. He was very patient and explained things thoroughly. I did not like the lack of communication with the studio, however. First, I had a "Fit session", which I was charged the same price ($49) as an actual lesson for, where I casually just talked to the instructor about what kind of music I liked. I felt short-changed when I found out that was all it was, and that I was spending basically $50 to talk to a person. A couple weeks into my lessons, I found out that I was auto-enrolled into a membership that I never agreed to and my account was charged a chunk of money that I did not authorize. Upon emailing the assistant and asking why this was, I never received a response. A week later, I decided to contact the head of the studio and she had told me that I had "I clearly marked this membership option", when I know that I had not, because I did not want to enroll into any membership until I knew I liked the instructor. She went on about policies in the fine print, instead of apologizing for the poor communication and the oversight of billing someone's account without notifying them. Unfortunately the poor standards of communication and customer service the studio has, is enough to make me not want to go there anymore.
