Jerry and his crew were FANTASTIC. Everything was spectacular from the food quality and flavor to the flexibility of menu options including vegan, vegetarian and gluten free. The buffets were set up to allow less than a 2 minute wait at the busiest time making all our employees very happy and a smooth process. That Food Guy Catering is being added to our preferred vendor list for future events and recommended to other departments within our organization.

One of the top three successes for our week long training was Sandra's food service. From start to finish this week, she and her staff provided a wide array of options for our lunches that left people with consistent variety of entree, side, veggie, and dessert choices. On top of this, she prepared vegan, gluten free, and nut free options throughout the week, allowing our staff with dietary limitations access to the same amount of variety mentioned above. As the coordinator for this event - I especially appreciated her attention to details every day. Set up was fast and smooth each afternoon, she brought plates and utensils each day if we needed them, and she built a week long menu based on our staffs preferences.

Alison and her team made my 30th birthday an absolute success! Alison is a joy to work with: professional, timely, gracious, and personable. And of course, the food was fantastic! Being new to "hosting," and also as someone who battle food allergies, Alison worked patiently and meticulously with me on the menu that turned out to be both visibly "fun" and incredibly delicious! Guests were complimenting the food the entire night. I will definitely use Alison again in the near future. Thanks for the fantastic service, Alison!

Hiring The Refuge Chef team was a great experience for my wedding. The food was outstanding - it was really delicious and beautifully presented! I asked him to make it gluten free, so we went the paleo/primal route, and my friends and family were raving about the meal all night! He felt more than just a chef, but someone that understood and knew what I needed for my dietary needs. I would hire him in a heartbeat for any future events. John is simply an amazing person to work with and an incredible chef!

It's been a week since our wedding celebration party that was catered in our home by Keith Banks and his efficient and thorough team. We had planned on sixty guests, and began at 5pm, with a menu emphasizing a wide variety of both hot and cold finger foods. I am still hearing compliments about the entire menu, which was designed to offer fare for carnivores, vegetarians, vegans and the gluten-free guest. Keith was also willing to prepare two special dishes with game sent down from family in Alaska. No matter what your menu is, don't omit Keith's mushroom puffs, which were loved by all. The personal attention paid to me in the planning stages, and the professional execution, artistic presentation, and clean-up was nothing short of a god-send. My only regret is that the set-up stage was still happening as the guests were arriving. Otherwise, everything went smoothly. Several of our guests went away with his business card!

I can't say enough about Whisler Sisters catering. Our research institute is very diverse in culture and eating preference and can be a bear to plan for. Amber presented a menu within 30 minutes that not only covered everyone from carnivore to vegan and the variety was so varied and delicious I didn't get one complaint! That's a first in the 18 years I've been planning these events. Amber even brought a couple extra dishes that weren't in the original plan! Her sister Wendi's scrumptious desserts were all gluten free and not one person noticed the difference. I'm still thinking about those chocolate macaroons! Both Amber and Wendi are loaded with personality which added another celebratory layer to our event. Afterward, they even helped me clean up the room. Above and beyond anything I'd expected from a caterer. To be fair, I should mention where they fell short but I can't think of anything that was underwhelming or negative and I didn't get any negative feedback from the 50+ people who attended...and they usually let me know...trust me. Oh...there is one thing...I didn't get to hear Amber sing and I hear she's got her jazz standards down. I highly recommend Whisler Sisters for your catering needs and look forward to having them back for future events.

We had a very simple wedding ceremony at home, followed by an intimate catered dinner with a grand total of 11 people including me and the groom. It was greatly appreciated that staff were willing to drive all the way from Tigard to our house in Kalama, Washington. Miranda was well organized and friendly. She was quick to respond to emails and phone calls, thoroughly answering any questions we had for her. We did a food tasting prior to booking and enjoyed the food we were able to sample, although after the fact we wished we would have had the opportunity to try the coriander salmon with peach/avocado salsa since it was "award-winning". We ended up ordering it as one of our three entrees and were a bit nervous that it may end up being a little over the top for us since we usually prepare salmon very simply at home. However, we found it to be delicious. The guests were very complimentary about the dinner. I especially liked the penne pasta with mushrooms and truffle cream sauce. We were sent two caterers for our event, one to serve food and one to bartend. We provided our own alcohol for the bartender to serve, so we had ingredients and garnishes for most basic cocktails. We also provided homemade mint-infused simple syrup to add to mojitos. When the catering staff showed up on the wedding day, the staff member designated as our bartender confided that she was very nervous since she had not bartended in about 30 years. She did not know how to make basic cocktails, which surprised us a little, but she was very friendly and accommodating, and used a flip book of recipes for guidance. The groom pointed out the mint simple syrup in the fridge while the bartender was setting up for the event and explained to her that it was for the mojitos. When I took a sip of the first mojito I ordered that evening, it was extremely strong since it had no simple syrup and just a splash of club soda. The bartender was more than happy to add the simple syrup and a bit more club soda at my request, which made it taste great. I was a bit worried about how my guests' drinks might be tasting, but didn't hear any complaints. The bartender was hard working and personable with the guests. We provided our own coffee to be served at the event. However, the grounds we had were either too course for the catering company's percolator or the measurement was off, because the coffee poured out looking more like dilute tea. We ended up making coffee for our guests with our French press. The catering van pulled into the garage and remained parked there in order to load the food and supplies into our house. The garage is the first thing one sees when he or she is driving up our long, winding gravel driveway. The groom asked staff if they could please shut the garage door once they were inside so that guests would be prompted to use the walkway around the side of the house and enter from the entrance rather than through the garage and laundry room. The garage door was never shut, so all of the guests came in this way. It wasn't a huge deal, but it wasn't as visually appealing. Overall, we were happy with the way our wedding dinner turned out and found the staff at Divine Catering to be very friendly. I may have decided not to purchase a bartending package had I known that we would be provided with an inexperienced bartender, but the evening still turned out well regardless.

Chefs Heather and Chad cooked for a dinner that I had at my house for a group of 16 friends. The communication with Heather was excellent and she had great ideas for the menu. We chose a latin feast theme. She was able to accommodate for gluten free needs with ease. They are wonderfully nice people, hard working, and their food was excellent. The guests all raved about the food. Particularly favorites were the grilled shrimp with mango salsa and the pulled pork. Their salsas were incredible. At the end no one had room for dessert but it was so good that every last person ate it anyway. I was pleasantly surprised and highly impressed. I would highly recommend Heather and Chad for any of your cooking needs.

Alison made everything so easy! She was very accommodating to our budget, and put together a delicious dinner for our office party. We went with the BBQ dinner, and I'm still dreaming about that grilled garlic chicken! Alison even made a special gluten free cupcake for our one gluten free employee. It's obvious that she loves what she does and really cares about creating a good experience for her customers. We will definitely be ordering from her again.

Kitchen Goddess Catering does a fantastic job of bringing healthly and flavorful meals to our organization's public and private functions. Elaine is great about preparing meals that include tasty dishes our vegetarians and gluten-free staff can also enjoy. It's always a pleasure to work with Elaine and her friendly staff. No matter if our event is large or small, I know I never have to worry about running out of food since there is always plenty. Highly reccomend!

We recently engaged Fork It Catering for our wedding reception, and it was the best decision of our entire event! I will start by saying that we have a diverse group of friends, with all different kinds of dietary needs. For some caterers, this would have been burdensome, as I have learned from talking to other couples. But Ron helped us with how we could include elements that would satisfy everyone's dietary requirements. As my husband and I were new to all of this, we weren't sure what we needed to do, and this is where Ron excelled. He helped us plan things that weren't even part of the catering part of our event, guiding us through the important decisions that had to be made, and even giving us the 30 day out plans, 14 day out plans, 7 days out plans, and what we needed to do the day of the event (which was really nothing except to bring the wine and beer that we were bringing from our private collection to share with our friends and family). Throughout the event, there were two overwhelming themes that people told us. They enjoyed the space that we had chosen, a little hidden gem in Southeast Portland. But the praise for the food was what people kept raving about - and I joined in with that praise. Everything was fresh and delectable, spiced perfectly, and the presentation was gorgeous. Not only did Ron and Fork It do our catering, but they did our cake, as well as a separate dessert for our vegan and gluten free friends. People raved over BOTH, and there were several people that had both desserts! In all, the day was beautiful, and made all that much better by Ron and his staff. We couldn't have made a better choice in caterer!

My experience with Sweet Tomaotes was excellent. The food was fresh and full. Salads were cold and delightful. The hot potato bar was hot and cooked to perfection. Cookies and muffins were warm and delicious. The staff was on time, happy, very helpful with things I needed. They were very informative about what was gluten free and what was vegetarian.

My Husband and I have enjoyed their delivered single meals. Our favorites are Chicken Parmesan and Stuffed Chicken Breast Marsala. My husband was born and raised in Chicago and he believes he as found the best Italian Cooking since leaving Chicago. Prices are reasonable for the quanity and delivery is usually as they say! I was impressed when I spoke to the owner. He apologized that he would not prepare a certain dish because the quality of the food was not as he expected from his supplier. He offered, and I accepted, an alternate dish free of charge. We order at least twice a month from Italy Delivered.com

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good caterer?

Reviews, interviews and menu tastings will help you find the right catering choice for your big day. Start by screening possible wedding caterers based on past reviews. If a caterer you are interested in has a review that concerns you, ask them about it; how they respond will be very telling. Next, ask about their availability for your wedding date.

If the wedding caterer is available on your date, it’s time to talk about menus and prices. Be clear about what your maximum budget is find out what choices this will allow you. Caterers may custom-create a menu for your event, or they may have menu templates within different price ranges that can guide your decision. A clear budget gives the caterer clear parameters within which to work and offer creative suggestions. Schedule a menu tasting to confirm you love your wedding menu. Once you have a menu and date, and have paid a deposit to reserve the caterer’s services, confirm additional details including when the food will be delivered to the site, what kind of service will be provided, how many servers will be onsite and for how long, and who is responsible for setup and cleanup. The more specific your contract, the fewer worries you’ll have on your wedding day. Get more smart hiring tips here.

Do you tip a wedding caterer?

Tipping 15 percent to 20 percent on a $3,000 catering bill can feel daunting — especially in light of all the other costs of throwing a wedding — but tipping your wedding caterer is standard practice. Be sure to ask your caterer about their specific policies. Many catering companies include gratuity as a line item on their bill. If tipping is not automatically included in your total, a good approach is to tip all the people involved the day of the event rather than paying one lump sum to the catering company. For each server and bartender, you can tip $20-$50, depending on how long they were onsite and whether they did exceptional work. You can also tip the chef; experts suggest $50. It’s also a good idea to tip the catering manager, the point-of-contact person who keeps the catering service running smoothly the day of your wedding, ensures all the food looks beautiful and is plentiful, and resolves any mishaps. Industry pros recommend tipping the catering manager $100-$200. If gratuity is not included and you’re tipping individuals, set aside $200-$500 in cash to be safe.

How much does wedding catering cost per person?

Wedding catering costs will always vary based on the number of guests you’re inviting, the menu you want to serve, and the way the food will be served to your guests. As you interview wedding catering companies, you’ll be presented with a cost per person for various menus. On the low end, wedding catering may cost approximately $15-$18 per person. This would include prepared food only, with no setup or service of any kind. The starting price for a simple buffet meal with minimal service typically averages $22 per person. Opting for the same menu with all organic ingredients could raise your costs to about $33 per person. A moderately upscale menu (finer ingredients, more elaborate presentation) could range from $24 to $34 per person. High-end wedding catering cost truly has no limit. Lobster, filet mignon, specialty seafood, organic ingredients — menu choices like these can boost your cost per person up to $150 and more.

How much does it cost to hire a caterer?

Catering prices depend mainly on how fancy you want the food and service to be and how many guests you’ll have. When you’re first looking to hire a caterer for your event, consider how many guests you’ll have and your total food and drink budget. The national average for event catering is $340, but catering prices can range into the thousands depending on your menu, guest count, and service.

Event catering is a broad term that covers everything from fully prepared, ready-to-eat food that the hosts plate and serve themselves to full-service, multicourse meals, including rental of linens, glassware and other items, with service staff organized by the catering company. Usually a caterer will determine cost based on the type of event you’re having, how many guests will attend, the level of service you desire, and what type of menu you’d like to have. For example, if you have a set catering budget, say $1,500, and you plan to have 50 people attend, that means you have $30 per person for food. If you have the same budget with 100 people, you have $15 per person for food. In this way, the number of people you want to attend your event and the level of food you want to serve them determines how much catering will cost.

What should you look for in a caterer?

A delicious meal is a critical element of a successful wedding, with happy guests fondly remembering your fabulous wedding food. The right caterer for you will be:

    • Available: Even the best caterer is no good if they aren’t available on your wedding date. Ask early before you get your heart set on someone.
    • Affordable for you: Find a caterer that you can afford. Having a spending plan ahead of time will mean you won’t overspend on food.
    • A good personality fit: Wedding planning is stressful, so work with someone that you can get along with and communicate with easily.
    • Experienced and recommended: Ensure the company has a proven track record with events of your size and the references to back it up.
    • Transparent about money: Steer clear of shady pricing. Find a caterer who is very clear about costs and is happy to talk you through budgets and pricing options.
    • Transparent about food: Find someone who is clear about where they source their food from and where it is prepared.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
