I liked how the answer explanations were very in-depth and something that you will never be able to get just from a prep book. Scheduling for sessions was very flexible and Jennifer would often go overtime to help me understand difficult stuff. Jennifer also helped me make the decision between SAT and ACT as I started out studying for the ACT but then turns out that the SAT suited me better so it saved me lots of time. Overall Jennifer is a very honest, helpful, genuine, experienced, and caring tutor and I would definitely recommend her not just for anyone who is trying to test prep but in general for people who are trying to have a time learning.

Beth was my daughter Abby’s English tutor 3 years ago when we just moved to US. English is the 2nd language and Abby passed ESL level 5 within 1.5 years. This is the 2nd time Beth tutoring Abby, but for SAT prep. specifically . Beth is always well prepared and communicates with me the learning target, provides effective feedback to keep me updated on Abby’s progress. Abby is also pleasant to learn from Beth and becomes more confident. It is very important that your kid accept his/her tutor, that makes learning become more interesting and productive. Beth is definitely a great tutor to work with, highly recommended!

After our one on one interview with Joey, we knew right away Joey would be a perfect fit to work with my son on SAT prep. We found Joey to be very professional, trustworthy, persistence, caring, smart, and very pleasant to talk to and work with. The system/program that Joey used to work with my son worked well and very thorough, it is tailored to my son’s needs. By the end of the program, my son picked up so many helpful skills working with Joey, for examples, reading comprehension which my son really struggled with for the longest time and strategies on tests taking that he can applied in school. My son’s SAT score has improved significantly by over 130 points working with Joey over a short period, that put him in the 90 percentiles. Additionally, not only Joey worked with my son on SAT prep, he was also a good mentor and really motivated my son to do well and recognized my son’s potentials. More importantly, my son gained more confidence and less anxiety going into the real test. On that note, I highly recommended Joey to any parents who is looking for someone to work with their child with SAT help or simply want to boost SAT scores to attracts those Ivy League schools and more scholarships! I was very pleased with Joey. Andrea

We were pleased with the work Miriam did with our son. She helped him analyse the mistakes he'd made on the PSAT and helped him learn strategies to avoid making similar ones in the future. I'll let you know if he gets a scholarship !

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do I prepare for the GMAT?

If you’re thinking of enrolling in graduate school to earn your MBA, it’s time to start thinking about preparing for the Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT). Working with a GMAT tutor is for many people a wise investment to help you strengthen the academic areas you may be weak in and improving your overall test score. A GMAT prep tutor should teach you not only the kind of information you need to know for the test, but the best test-taking strategies. The GMAT tests you on four categories: quantitative, verbal, integrated reasoning, and an analytical writing assessment. Cramming is probably not going to give you good results for this standardized test; give yourself between two and six months to prepare, focusing on your most challenging areas first. Successful GMAT prep means planning ahead and studying thoroughly. Those students who reported studying under 75 hours were more likely to score 400 or lower on the test, while students who studied 121 hours or more were more likely to score 700 or higher on the test. Hiring a GMAT prep tutor can range in price from under $50 to over $200 per hour.

How long does it take to prepare for the GMAT?

Pros recommend planning to spend two to six months for GMAT prep. The test itself is only 3.5 hours long, but your score will have a major effect on what schools grant you admission. If you’d like to be considered for one of the top-tier schools, it’s recommended to score at least a 700. Your goals for your MBA can help drive your GMAT prep. GMAT tutors will guide your study plan and help analyze your strengths and weaknesses. GMAT tutors also offer professional guidance and insights on strategic GMAT test-taking. Avail yourself of free GMAT prep software that provides sample test questions for you to practice. The creators of the GMAT recommend creating a structured study plan detailing when you will study each day and what topics you will study during each session. Take into account what style of learning works best for you (solo study, one-on-one tutoring, group tutoring, study groups, prep courses) and proceed accordingly. The test is made up of these four categories, each with an allotted time:

    • Analytical writing assessment: 1 topic, 30 minutes.
    • Integrated reasoning: 12 questions, 30 minutes.
    • Quantitative: 37 questions, 75 minutes.
    • Verbal: 41 questions: 75 minutes.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
