Dr. Judkins is an excellent teacher. Only after a few lessons with him, my son had a significant improvement in ACT reading, from 19 questions wrong to 2 questions wrong in official practice tests. We are looking forward to seeing other big improvements in his future college level lessons with Dr. Judkins.

Elissa is excellent with my 14-year-old granddaughter who had become discouraged with her online high school French class. Elissa is encouraging, tells interesting stories, is very attentive, is firm and helps move along with the lessons. I see the excitement in my granddaughter, she looks forward to going to the tutoring sessions.

    About

I speak several languages, and I'm currently attending PSU, so I was looking for a part-time job that would include practicing the languages I happen to know. I have a colorful background and have experienced quite a bit, so I can help with Mandarin, Korean, English, Arabic, or Japanese.

    About

I am an experienced English and English as a Second Language instructor/tutor in the Portland metro area with a diverse academic and professional background. Education: Senior Applied Linguistics major at Portland State University, GPA 3.06, Expected graduation December 2015. (70 hour) TESOL Certificate from Portland State University - June 2015 Associate of Science in Environmental Science from Tacoma Community College, June 2012 Associate of Art in Arabic from Defense Language Institute, June 2009 Relevant Experience: Tutoring: Arabic (2004-2009) Tutoring: Pre-calculus, Organismal Biology, Geology, History, Geography, English (2009-2012) Tutoring: English as a Second Language (ESL) (2014-2015) Teaching: English as a Second Language (ESL) (2015) I have tutored many students over the years and am nearly done with my teaching credentials. I would like to continue tutoring students in English before I leave the country to teach English abroad next June (2016). I am also a parent with a 9 year old daughter and a 7 1/2 year old son. They both demonstrated delayed language skills, though my son's IQ is 168. I understand a parent's concerns about their children keeping up with their peers and providing appropriately challenging lessons for talented students. Hobbies/Interests: As a child I excelled in school, attending gifted student programs in elementary, left the 7th grade mid-year to attend high school (9th grade in my region) and left high school after the 10th grade to go to college. During my early education, I struggled with standardization and understand that students think in a variety of ways. The way a student learns isn't always compatible with a teacher's or textbook's approach. Variety and practicality are often much better options for these students. I am an active martial arts student and have practiced Judo, Hapkido, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu(BJJ), Aikido, Muay Thai and general MMA skills over the past 3 months. In the past, I was a Marine Corps Martial Arts Program trainer and trained in Haganah using the F.I.G.H.T. system originating in Israel. I understand students whose interests are in physical, rather than academic, subjects, as well as how to use those passions to learn English. Other active hobbies of mine include table top roleplaying games and camping. I have a passion for writing and storytelling that I enjoy sharing with others in the games that I play. It is often easier to engage younger students through learning tasks that are fun than those kinds of tasks typically found in textbooks.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a Spanish tutor do?

The goal of a Spanish tutor is to help students improve their Spanish reading, writing, comprehension, and conversation skills. The tutor’s approaches may vary, depending on whether the instruction is individual or a group class. Many Spanish tutors practice immersion — meaning they will speak only Spanish with their pupils. For students with little to no Spanish experience, the Spanish tutor may use a mix of Spanish and English to accustom their students to speaking the language.

A Spanish tutor can offer a wide range of services to their students. For students currently enrolled in a Spanish class through their middle school or high school, a Spanish tutor can help them with homework and language practice, as well as expanding their understanding of their current school curriculum. For adults, Spanish tutors will have different approaches based on that student’s need. Academics and those seeking high-level professional development for their career will often have more intensive and targeted lessons, drills, and interactive speaking tests. For adults who wish to learn conversational Spanish for fun or for travel, lessons may revolve around learning commonly used phrases and practicing speaking in relaxed settings.

How much do Spanish tutors charge?

Nationally, the average cost for a Spanish tutor ranges from $30 to $40 per hour. The cost for a Spanish tutor can vary depending on whether you choose private instruction or group lessons. Geographic location can affect cost; tutors in expensive cities and pricier regions command higher rates than in rural areas and small towns. The experience and education of the Spanish tutor will also affect their rates. For adult education, many people learning Spanish choose to join a Spanish school with tutors who teach group classes and also offer private tutoring for students. Typically these schools charge a monthly tuition that gives students access to a set number of classes per week, with private tutoring available at an additional cost. One example of an average cost is a monthly tuition of $200, which includes five 90-minute group lessons per month. Monthly tuition can vary depending on the school and the teachers. Short-term workshops are also a way to learn Spanish. Students may work with a Spanish tutor and group of other students at their skill level for a short period of time. One example of an average price is $100 for an eight-week course, with one 60-minute group class per week.
