Introduction: Hi there! My name is Eric and I'm a music teacher here in Portland, Oregon. I studied theory and composition at New York University under Pedro Da Silva and moved out to Portland afterwards. I am a guitarist and I additional play and teach piano and bass. I am also a film composer, recording artist and producer. I teach classical, rock, jazz, folk guitar and much more as well as music theory, piano, songwriting, bass and electronic music. I've taught private lessons independently for about 6 years now, and have also taught lessons through Rose City Music Academy, Keys to Life Music School, after school at Catlin Gabel, and Saturday Academy. I love teaching students of all ages and interests, and find it equally rewarding sparking and cultivating a growing interest in music in new and young musicians just starting out as I do doing deep dives into studying more advanced music with my more advanced students who are interested. For students who cannot afford the full prices of my lessons -- I DO OFFER DISCOUNTS!! :) As a composer, I work independently as well as with local mentor film composer Mark Orton (Nebraska, My Old Lady, Boxtrolls, This American Life, more.) I have worked on and composed the music for numerous feature films and documentaries including a feature length documentary this Spring titled "Chehalis: A Watershed Moment" about the impact of dams on the salmon population here in the Northwest. In 2020 I co-composed the music with Mark Orton and John Hancock to a Podcast created by NYTimes Journalist Patrick Radden Keefe and produced by Spotify called “Wind of Change,” and recorded with the Moscow Bowtie Orchestra for upcoming feature length film “12 Mighty Orphans” starring Luke Wilson, Robert Duvall and Martin Sheen. I also release records under the named 'Kennebec' -- my debut album “Departure” released to critical acclaim on Night Time Stories, original artist label of the acclaimed Late Night Tales compilation series and home to texan trio Khruangbin, Leifur James and Ash Walker. Vinyl and CD are available in stores throughout the US, Canada, Europe and Japan and can be purchased and streamed on any platform. I have also played guitar on a variety of records including Kalaido's 'Moonlit Tales' which has garnered I-Don't-Know-How-Many-Millions (but many millions) of plays on Spotify nowadays. I have more of my work across streaming platforms and on my website here -- EricPhillipsMusic.com Thanks! I look forward to meeting you -Eric

Our 13 year old daughter is learning beginning guitar under Eric's tutelage. We are impressed by how quickly she is learning guitar basics and grateful she is eager to play and enjoying the weekly lessons. Eric is a terrific communicator and like the typical busy family we appreciate his flexibility. I highly recommend Eric!

Eric did an excellent job teaching electronic music to my 13yo one-on-one. My kid can be hard to keep focused and can become frustrated when they are not good at something. Eric was always patient, thoughtful and flexible. He worked with my child around their particular musical interests. I was very happy with everything.

My son has been a student of Eric’s for two years now, beginning when he was 8 years old. Eric’s teaching approach with my son is student driven. Rather than being prescriptive with a rigid set of songs or playing styles, my son selects songs, sometimes on his own or based on a few recommendations that Eric plays for him to choose from. In either case, Eric incorporates new techniques into the arrangement of the songs my son wants to play. Having that ownership in the song selection process has been a great motivator for his desire to practice. He has learned to play a number of songs from different genres, and performed them in recital settings as well. The song range he has played at recitals has spanned from Edvard Grieg’s In the Hall of the Mountain King to Jimi Hendrix’s Purple Haze. Currently, he is working on a ragtime jazz piece. Eric’s own musical talent is readily apparent in his instruction as well. Not in the sense of bravado, but competence with an aim to teach my son. Overall Eric has been a great fit for my son with good patience while challenging him to learn more and have fun playing.

Eric is awesome. He’s patient, puts in the time and follows up after our lessons with additional instruction for practice throughout the week. He’s able to interpret any song to keep our daughter engaged from folk, classic rock to pop. It’s been a smooth transition to virtual lessons, but hopeful to be back in person when able.

We have been taking lessons with Eric for 5 years now. I love that he meets my kids where they are and encourages them to explore what thrills them about music without adding pressure. They love working with him!
