We hired Steady State for photography for our wedding. We couldn't be happier with the results! When we first reached out Steady State responded immediately, even though they were on vacation! Shortly after we spoke on the phone and they took their time getting to know exactly what we wanted. Jason, the owner, is very fun and engaging, and knows exactly how to get everyone smiling. His turnaround in getting us our final photos was way faster than expected. We highly recommend Steady State Studios! Thank you! -Rachel & Tom

For my parents 50th wedding anniversary we purchased a family photo session with Jerrad and was impressed from first contact. I had never used Thumbtack before, and Jarred was prompt with a response and his package/prices were reasonable. The photo shoot occurred on location and Jerrad was timely and professional. He was patient with our ideas and offered some excellent advice along the way. My son will need senior pictures in a few years and I will not hesitate to call Still Soul Photography. Thank you Jerrad!

Our family looks forward to many more photo sessions to capture special moments with Ryan and highly recommend him.

My wife and I knew from the start that we couldn't plan a wedding for 100 guests by ourselves. After reviewing a couple event planners, we found Morgan. It was clear from the beginning that her personality was a nice match for ours, so we hired her for the full wedding package. She anticipated our needs and understood the level of effort we wanted to put into the big day (ie not much; we're fairly lazy, but we still wanted to throw a beautiful wedding). Morgan took our aesthetic, goals and budget into account at every turn, and was awesome at laying out each choice and presenting our options. She gently prompted us to complete tasks to stick to our timeline, but it never felt like a chore. She also connected us to amazing vendors. On the surface, she was so cool, calm and collected, she made it look easy. But make no mistake, Morgan worked her tail off, and in the end, everything came together beautifully with no drama. I can't recommend her enough!

Our wedding was on 2011. Juan is amazing. My wife and I would never be described as naturals in front of the camera, but Juan made it so much fun that we didn't feel awkward. We could just focus on having a good time with our best friends and family and being ourselves. He is the best.

I am thrilled to have Stefani as our wedding photographer; she handled a the chaos of coordinating pictures with 60+ people, rainy weather, and low lighting. She answered all of my questions, listened to my concerns, was reassuring, and did it all with a smile. It was a wonderful experience!

My husband and I hired Richard for our wedding videographer. We chose him because he was very professional, showed awesome videos that he had previously done, and he seemed like a great fit for what we wanted on a tight budget. Richard went above and beyond my initial expectations, he listened to what we had in mind and created a beautiful video from it. Not only did he capture our once in a lifetime moments, but he created this video that we will forever cherish. The thing I loved most was that we chose our songs that we wanted on the video and boy did he make it all match up perfectly, I really don't know how he does it. We also got all of the raw footage which was a must as well. We couldn't have gotten this beautiful work from anyone else. We had put a lot of trust in him to film our wedding and he exceeded our expectations! The thing that makes Richard stand out was that he went the extra mile to make sure we were completely satisfied. Thanks again Richard

McCale did a wonderful job DJing and MCing our wedding reception! He was very responsive and very professional during the planning process and our event. We had guests of a variety of ages and he made sure there were hits from a variety of decades. Everyone had a blast on the dance floor, young and old. We had so many family members and friends comment on how great the music mix was after the event. He also helped facilitate various announcements during our reception, which helped our reception to flow smoothly.

Our wedding photos were no less than magnificent and we could not be happier! Jenn is so enthusiastic and have a great eye for detail. She and her daughter put together a wedding video for us that was absolutely beautiful, they were so easy going with our crazy families, and took photos that are completely jaw dropping. Sarah Haimes has truly been a dream to work with. I started booking her travel dates and can't be even more thankful for having her be the one to document very precious moments of my life. She is primarily a wedding photographer, but OMG you know it's talent that no matter the time of day, or the location, or the genre of portraiture. Because Shuttergram Photography PREFORMS. That is the true beauty of working with a professional! Shuttergram Photography stands out from other photographers in the industry because of her unique eye and artistic approach to all sessions. She has strong work with single subjects all the way to group photos for families or wedding portraits. But what really gets me is her artistic editing and knowing how to highlight your best features that make you feel like a million bucks. I'm a proud client and supporter of Shuttergram Photography. And I've been contemplating on a vow renewal just so I can get wedding portraits with her artistic vision!

Since the beginning of working with Crystal, she has been outstanding in listening to our interests, visions, and timeline. Crystal is extremely professional while quite pleasant and patient. In our situation, there was a family emergency which required the cancellation of the wedding. Crystal accommodated these changes, working with us to achieve an ideal situation, which forced an entire year of waiting to take photos. For two extremely introverted people, Crystal was able to draw out the beauty of relationship and adornment. The final product is nothing less than OUTSTANDING at an extremely discounted price. For the quality, price, and great gal with whom to work, you can find nothing better. So much so, my youngest daughter immediately contracted Crystal to shoot her wedding next year. I cannot say enough to express my appreciation for all she has done for us. I know you will find yourself extremely pleased with having an amazing experience and great support in making your photography timeless. Look no further, you found the best!

We hired Dave to shoot our wedding and everything went as planned. He prepared a schedule, stuck to it, and ultimately delivered everything as expected. His assistant was also easy to work with and they had a lot of great ideas.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a videographer and what do they do?

A videographer professionally films weddings and other events and edits the footage to create film keepsakes or marketing materials for their clients. Wedding videographers record all the key elements of your wedding day, ceremony and reception, and then edit the hours of film during post-production to make a wedding video, social media highlight reels, and any other film features you choose. Wedding videography captures, in live action, your vows, the cake-cutting, the first dance, reception toasts, the decor, the guests and all the details of your day. Many wedding videographers also interview guests (based on an interview list provided by the couple) and incorporate the recorded responses into the wedding video. Event videography typically costs less than wedding videography, as events are shorter with less detail. The national average cost for event videography is $500-$760, while the national average cost for wedding videography is $990-$1,260. A videographer usually does not need to be licensed, but it is important to confirm they have insurance and good standing in the business community, as well as good client reviews. A great majority of the work happens during post-production. The pros watch and blend together the hours of footage they took (sometimes from multiple cameras) to capture the story of your wedding day or event.

How do you choose a wedding videographer?

A wedding videographer will create a lifetime memory for you from edited video footage of your wedding day, ceremony and reception. Choosing a wedding videographer starts with looking online at portfolios of their past work. There’s no need to talk to anyone unless you love what you see. Next, make sure they have good reviews and past client experience; don’t be shy about asking for references if there aren’t any posted online. When you find someone who has a style you love, ask if they are available on your wedding day. If so, it’s time to talk pricing. Be clear about your maximum budget, and ask what kind of packages they offer. Pricing will depend on the number of crew needed for filming, the hours they are required to be onsite, post-production editing, and the length of the final product. Talk with several wedding videographers to get a feel for what prices are like in your region. Nationally, the average cost for wedding videography ranges between $990 and $1,260 per event. Once you agree on a product and have a plan, get everything in a written and signed contract. Clearly state the details of what is expected for your wedding day and from the final product. Be prepared to pay a deposit to reserve their services for the day, then pay the remainder upon receiving the video.

What should you ask your wedding videographer before hiring?

Finding the perfect wedding videographer doesn’t have to be stressful. Asking a few key questions upfront will help you find the right fit for your big day. Before talking with wedding videographers, research their work online. Look at their websites, business profiles and social media, and see what their finished wedding videos look like. If the style fits what you’re envisioning, it’s time to reach out. During initial contact, make sure you get along with the person. This is important since they’ll be interacting with you and your guests.

Your first question should be about their availability; there’s no point in going further if they’re booked on your wedding day. Ask to see references if they’re not readily available online. Next, it’s time to talk about money. Ask how they determine rates or what kind of packages they offer. When you settle on a rate and the services you want, make sure to have a written contract that outlines everything, including cost, length of time they film, what post-production will include, and when you can expect to receive the edited project.

How much is videography for a wedding?

Wedding videography is one thing many couples regret not paying for. It may seem like just another expense during wedding planning, but it’s really special to have a moving memory of your big day. The national average cost for wedding videography is $990-$1,260. Pricing can vary depending on wedding length, special film features, the amount of editing required, and how many videographers are needed to cover the event. Many videographers offer packages that provide different levels of service. A very simple wedding documentary could be $600 or more, while a full-scale cinematic experience involving multiple videographers could be $2,500 or more. Here’s an example of average package pricing:

  • Package 1: $1,400
    • Footage during and after the ceremony, including highlights requested by the couple.
    • Two cameras with audio equipment.
    • DVD including a 3- or 4-minute edit to a song of the couple’s choice and a 45- to 50-minute raw edit covering the entire event.
    • Recordings of guests’ good wishes to the couple.
  • Package 2: $1,800
    • Includes everything from Package 1, plus an additional videographer (2 total) and aerial videography.

How much does it cost for a photographer for a wedding?

Finding the right wedding photographer can make a big difference for your ceremony. Nationally, the average wedding photographer’s price ranges from $800 to $1,000, but costs can be much higher in areas like Chicago, New York or Los Angeles where some couples spend $2,000 to $5,000 or more for the photographer they want. Factors that can affect your wedding photographer prices include the photographer’s reputation and experience. Heavy hitters can command top rates, especially during wedding-season weekends. Day of the week also affects your cost. You may get a $200 discount on wedding photographer prices if you get married on a Friday in November rather than a Saturday in June. Time onsite is also an important cost factor. Hiring a photographer to snap photos from the moment you wake up until after last call at the reception is going to cost more than five hours of pictures during the day. Multiple photographers, special lighting, and videography will also increase your costs. Ultimately you want to find someone who has a style you love and can provide the number of edited shots you want for a price you can handle. Learn more about hiring a wedding photographer.
