We hired Steady State for photography for our wedding. We couldn't be happier with the results! When we first reached out Steady State responded immediately, even though they were on vacation! Shortly after we spoke on the phone and they took their time getting to know exactly what we wanted. Jason, the owner, is very fun and engaging, and knows exactly how to get everyone smiling. His turnaround in getting us our final photos was way faster than expected. We highly recommend Steady State Studios! Thank you! -Rachel & Tom

For my parents 50th wedding anniversary we purchased a family photo session with Jerrad and was impressed from first contact. I had never used Thumbtack before, and Jarred was prompt with a response and his package/prices were reasonable. The photo shoot occurred on location and Jerrad was timely and professional. He was patient with our ideas and offered some excellent advice along the way. My son will need senior pictures in a few years and I will not hesitate to call Still Soul Photography. Thank you Jerrad!

Deanna was very quick and generous to share her work with me (another wedding professional) when I requested to keep and use her photos. She got some great shots and I hope we get to work together again!

I found myself in a dilemma when the video editor I hired told me it would take 2-3 weeks for my final product. Tim responded to my inquiry quickly, and set off to work. He listened to what I wanted, and created magic, which was a miracle with the not so stellar wedding video I had. Duclos Media did a wonderful job, and I wouldn't hesitate to hire him again.

Our wedding was on 2011. Juan is amazing. My wife and I would never be described as naturals in front of the camera, but Juan made it so much fun that we didn't feel awkward. We could just focus on having a good time with our best friends and family and being ourselves. He is the best.

My husband and I hired Richard for our wedding videographer. We chose him because he was very professional, showed awesome videos that he had previously done, and he seemed like a great fit for what we wanted on a tight budget. Richard went above and beyond my initial expectations, he listened to what we had in mind and created a beautiful video from it. Not only did he capture our once in a lifetime moments, but he created this video that we will forever cherish. The thing I loved most was that we chose our songs that we wanted on the video and boy did he make it all match up perfectly, I really don't know how he does it. We also got all of the raw footage which was a must as well. We couldn't have gotten this beautiful work from anyone else. We had put a lot of trust in him to film our wedding and he exceeded our expectations! The thing that makes Richard stand out was that he went the extra mile to make sure we were completely satisfied. Thanks again Richard

Couldn’t be happier with Rob`s work for our pregnancy shoots! I love my maternity photos – it was such a wonderful thing to do just before giving birth! Rob was absolutely incredible to work with. He is experienced, very creative and his warm personality brings out the best in his subjects, especially if you are unsure of how to "act" in front of the camera. He makes you feel completely relaxed and at ease, and it truly makes a difference in your photos. I have to say Rob actually makes taking photos fun! I'd consider myself not photogenic until I started working with Rob - he really works his magic and can give just the right direction to make all the difference. I absolutely love my maternity photos and can’t believe how fantastic Rob made me look just a week before giving birth! Him and his assistant were patient but professional, giving us tips throughout the session to make sure the pictures came out great. At every moment they were kneeling, bending, standing on chairs just to get the shot they wanted. Rob is very dedicated to get the best shots, it is clear though that he truly loves what he does. Robs photos are stunning, natural and proudly hanging throughout our home. We will treasure our photos for years to come and will likely be back for future family shoots. Rob is also great at portraits and wedding photography. Check out his blog for loads more cool pics. He has an incredible eye for the "right" shot, being a top notch photographer and we are so happy we hired him! I would recommend him for any special occasion you want to remember forever.

Andrea & Kevin delivered! From the time we had our first conversation on the telephone, to our first meeting the day of our wedding to receiving the photographs, they were top notch professionals. They made everyone feel comfortable; no one realized they were being photographed, no one ever felt imposed upon. The posed photos were fun, the candid ones more so, and they managed to capture some very unexpected moments (the smashing of the glass which was quite dramatic!), and some quiet moments as well. They were easy to work with, very personable, and people I would definitely recommend. A++!!

We got a family portrait with parents taken by the studios in Minneapolis recently. The pictures came out great and we are receiving rave reviews for it. We also had a pre-wedding video shoot done which was amazing fun. It captured our relationship perfectly and has become a memory we will always cherish - A & P

My fiance and I are still talking about how romantic and fun our engagement photo shoot was with Stephanie. She made us feel relaxed and comfortable! The experience alone was so worth it. She got our photos edited and sent to us SO quickly and they.are.faaaabulous! We only managed to narrow down our favorites to 30 photos! We are so excited to have her shoot our wedding - not only for her incredible work, but her fun, calming company as well.

McCale did a wonderful job DJing and MCing our wedding reception! He was very responsive and very professional during the planning process and our event. We had guests of a variety of ages and he made sure there were hits from a variety of decades. Everyone had a blast on the dance floor, young and old. We had so many family members and friends comment on how great the music mix was after the event. He also helped facilitate various announcements during our reception, which helped our reception to flow smoothly.

My future daughter n law spoke with Abby and said had the best conversation with her. Along with her mom, Susan, Jenny met Abby in person and were very impressed with her professionalism and fun personality! They were able to view other wedding albums and fell in love with her work. I look forward to meeting Abby and her assistant. Their upcoming nuptials is on Dec. 2, 2017. I know she will make Jenny and Ryne's wedding beautiful and unforgettable.

We had Kevin Perkins come out to one of our outdoor events to capture some of the riders on the track in action. After seeing the photos he took, we were blown away how awesome they looked. My wife and I hired Chris as our wedding photographer. He was professional, arrived early, and was flexible with our requests. Everyone loved the photos he took. He found some great backgrounds near our venue to use. The pictures ranged from very candid to staged; but all of them looked awesome! We were lucky to have hired such a great photographer last minute. We'd highly recommend Chris to anyone looking for an event photographer.

Tamara Sloboda was a phenomenal videographer to work with. My wife and I are able to relive our best day of our lives through the amazing wedding video that was created by TessFilms. I would highly consider using her for your wedding. Very professional, always serious, business like and very easy to work with. The communication was important for us and she went above and beyond what we expected. The best surprise was when we were handed our video in a little cute, wrapped present. Thank you so much Tamara Sloboda!!!

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a videographer and what do they do?

A videographer professionally films weddings and other events and edits the footage to create film keepsakes or marketing materials for their clients. Wedding videographers record all the key elements of your wedding day, ceremony and reception, and then edit the hours of film during post-production to make a wedding video, social media highlight reels, and any other film features you choose. Wedding videography captures, in live action, your vows, the cake-cutting, the first dance, reception toasts, the decor, the guests and all the details of your day. Many wedding videographers also interview guests (based on an interview list provided by the couple) and incorporate the recorded responses into the wedding video. Event videography typically costs less than wedding videography, as events are shorter with less detail. The national average cost for event videography is $500-$760, while the national average cost for wedding videography is $990-$1,260. A videographer usually does not need to be licensed, but it is important to confirm they have insurance and good standing in the business community, as well as good client reviews. A great majority of the work happens during post-production. The pros watch and blend together the hours of footage they took (sometimes from multiple cameras) to capture the story of your wedding day or event.

How do you choose a wedding videographer?

A wedding videographer will create a lifetime memory for you from edited video footage of your wedding day, ceremony and reception. Choosing a wedding videographer starts with looking online at portfolios of their past work. There’s no need to talk to anyone unless you love what you see. Next, make sure they have good reviews and past client experience; don’t be shy about asking for references if there aren’t any posted online. When you find someone who has a style you love, ask if they are available on your wedding day. If so, it’s time to talk pricing. Be clear about your maximum budget, and ask what kind of packages they offer. Pricing will depend on the number of crew needed for filming, the hours they are required to be onsite, post-production editing, and the length of the final product. Talk with several wedding videographers to get a feel for what prices are like in your region. Nationally, the average cost for wedding videography ranges between $990 and $1,260 per event. Once you agree on a product and have a plan, get everything in a written and signed contract. Clearly state the details of what is expected for your wedding day and from the final product. Be prepared to pay a deposit to reserve their services for the day, then pay the remainder upon receiving the video.

How much does it cost for a photographer for a wedding?

Finding the right wedding photographer can make a big difference for your ceremony. Nationally, the average wedding photographer’s price ranges from $800 to $1,000, but costs can be much higher in areas like Chicago, New York or Los Angeles where some couples spend $2,000 to $5,000 or more for the photographer they want. Factors that can affect your wedding photographer prices include the photographer’s reputation and experience. Heavy hitters can command top rates, especially during wedding-season weekends. Day of the week also affects your cost. You may get a $200 discount on wedding photographer prices if you get married on a Friday in November rather than a Saturday in June. Time onsite is also an important cost factor. Hiring a photographer to snap photos from the moment you wake up until after last call at the reception is going to cost more than five hours of pictures during the day. Multiple photographers, special lighting, and videography will also increase your costs. Ultimately you want to find someone who has a style you love and can provide the number of edited shots you want for a price you can handle. Learn more about hiring a wedding photographer.

What should you ask your wedding videographer before hiring?

Finding the perfect wedding videographer doesn’t have to be stressful. Asking a few key questions upfront will help you find the right fit for your big day. Before talking with wedding videographers, research their work online. Look at their websites, business profiles and social media, and see what their finished wedding videos look like. If the style fits what you’re envisioning, it’s time to reach out. During initial contact, make sure you get along with the person. This is important since they’ll be interacting with you and your guests.

Your first question should be about their availability; there’s no point in going further if they’re booked on your wedding day. Ask to see references if they’re not readily available online. Next, it’s time to talk about money. Ask how they determine rates or what kind of packages they offer. When you settle on a rate and the services you want, make sure to have a written contract that outlines everything, including cost, length of time they film, what post-production will include, and when you can expect to receive the edited project.

When do you pay your wedding videographer and wedding photographer?

Most wedding videographers and photographers require a set deposit when you hire them. Wedding season is a busy time and a deposit secures that vendor’s services for your wedding date. It also protects the vendor if the couple changes their mind at the last minute, and they can’t find a new booking and lose work for the day. The deposit may be anywhere from 20 percent to  50 percent of the agreed-upon total price. Always get a written confirmation that your deposit has been received.

The remainder of the wedding videography and photography bill may be due in the week before to your wedding or on the day of the wedding. Other vendors may require a second payment immediately before the wedding and a third and final payment after the wedding video or photos are delivered. Each vendor has their own policies, so before hiring be sure to read, understand and agree to payment protocols. There is no requirement for tipping wedding videographers or photographers, but if you do want to tip them, the end of the reception is the appropriate time.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
