We had Glenn come and install our hardwood floors for us. When he gave us a bid that seemed kind of low, I was a bit skeptical, but we decided to go with him anyways, because of his previous reviews. Glenn was awesome! He was able to get us in rather quickly, and he did a great job. I am super happy with the work that he did, I get comments all the time on how great our floors look. Glenn also has many other areas of expertise, so we will keep him in mind the next time we need something done around the house. I would definitely recommend him for other jobs!

Corey is professional, knowledgeable, polite, friendly, honest, and helpful. We are very lucky to hire him as a plumber to putting our broken bathroom together beautifully. We got ikea a vanity and sink that are quite difficult to install. He explained what needs to be done and what he is going to do. He did exactly what he said. He also installed a light fixture professionally. And, he is going to put door frames, base boards, and a floor transition etc. He is good at what he does. He cares every little details and he treats our home like his own house. His pricing is reasonable. His advice is super helpful in terms of problem solving. The best thing was after his work. He put drawers back in the vanity enen if I didn't ask and he cleaned up everything. I feel like It's hard to find a good person who can do their job well in this industry. But, Corey is the one we can trust and rely on. I look forward to hiring him 100% happily to make our home safe and beautiful in the near future. Thank you so much. Corey.

Daniel did all the work for a competitive price. Responded to texts/calls promptly. He had everything he needed for the job, was careful in the house where I just had the new wood floor. He also made the recommendation on another door to me to match the both side color in the kitchen. He didn't charge you with tiny things, attention to details. I would definitely recommend. Daniel is a fantastic professional. I'd hire him again to do another project such as the tile backsplash.

Lucian literally saved the day. We had a large cabinet removed from our kitchen and our contractor said he could repair our hardwood floors. After three days of unsuccessfully pounding and drilling screws into the wood to make it fit, he gave up. Lucian had been over a couple week prior to give us an estimate, but I had decided to let our contractor do it, since he said he could. So when I contacted Lucian again, Luiza responded immediately and said Lucian could fix the floors, and they even lowered their original bid because of some of the work the contractor was able to perform. Lucian came the next day (at 7:45AM, which these days it's hard to get any contractor or subcontractor to your house that early) and he stayed until 6:30PM until the job was completed. It looks amazing! I am still amazed he was able to fix the floors AND complete the project within one day, and with very little dust and smell too. I highly recommend Vibrant Flooring. If I ever have any hardwood floor projects again I won't contact anyone else.

I liked the work Anatolie did for me. He installed a heated bath and shower floor and he also helped me install kohler choregragh wall panels that look like subway tile that is one piece with only corner seems. I liked his work so much that I told a friend and he installed a shower floor and tiled the 3 walls of the shower. My friend liked the job that Anatolia completed also. I am going to hire him again in a couple of months to do 2 more baths for me.

I just completed a condo remodel for a client in SW Portland. I worked with the client to help her design and project manage the work from start to finish. Part of the process is partnering with General Contractors to undertake the work. This project included a kitchen remodel, (new cabinets, quartz, appliances etc) new flooring and painting throughout. Ben was selected as the contractor to do the work for a variety of reasons. He was responsive, communicated well, his rates were good and he committed to get the work done in just over 3 weeks so they could list the property on the market. Ben worked long hours to achieve this, was flexible throughout the process and listened well. In this case he was managing my expectations and meeting the needs of the client. The work got achieved on time, within budget and the client is very happy with the end result. I would certainly use Ben again on another client project. Thank you!

We highly recommend NW Madera flooring! We had a large hardwood floor refinishing project and they completed it on time, well within our budget and used top-of-the-line equipment and products. None of the other flooring company quotes came close to what they quoted for the project and they were able to complete it within a time frame that caused the least amount of inconvenience- even though it meant staying on the job until 9:30 PM! ( One less night in a hotel for us!) We will definitely use them for future projects and have already recommended this company to our friends.

Working with Geoff and his guys was a great experience! Our project consisted of finishing 2 bedrooms, including drywall, texturing, painting, flooring, and carpentry work. Geoff was able to take our ideas and make them happen in our allotted timeframe, as well as providing valuable insight that really made our project a success. Communication was great too, we were always in the loop. Overall, cant say enough good things about working with Geoff. Will look to him again for future projects!

Bateson Hardwood Floors (BHF) sanded and refinished the oak floors in our living room, hallway and downstairs powder room. Of the five estimates I requested, the BHF bid was not the lowest but it walked me through the work process and helped me decide on which type of finishing product to choose. Of the five contractors, BHS was the only contractor to follow up with references, references that were complimentary. Randy and his crew always arrived on time and followed the work plan Randy explained to me. I was concerned about dust. BHF blocked two passages to the kitchen with plastic sheeting and did a great job minimizing/vacuuming dust. Cleanup was minimal on my part. So the process was very professional and the results now look far better than the original finish when the house was new. One thing I found interesting is that I asked each contractor if I should paint the baseboard before or after the floors were refinished (I had just repainted the living room and hallway). BHS was the only contractor that recommended that I paint the baseboards before they did their work. There was absolutely NO repainting necessary when they completed their work...very precise work. I was very impressed with the crew; they were easy to have around the house, easy to communicate with and trustworthy. I would not hesitate to employ Bateson Hardwood Floors again. We are very happy with their work. The floors look fantastic.

Virgil and his crew did a superb job. They showed up on time, worked hard, and took obvious pride in their work. Our floors look beautiful. The first job they did for us was 1400 sq.ft. of some really hard prefinished Brazilian ipe--the wood was so hard that another installer gave up after one day. Virgil came in, took a look at the wood, showed me what he was going to do, and then did it flawlessly. We also had him install 400 sq. ft. of bamboo. Every time there was something to figure out and deal with, Virgil and his installers found a solution. I feel lucky that they were available to install the floors in our house. They were also friendly and professional and kept the place clean as they worked. If I ever install floors again, I will definitely use All Green Hardwood Floors.

We remodeled a recently purchased 1970's home. We raised the living room floor, removed a raised floor in the master bedroom, replaced all the floors with hardwood, moved the washer and dryer to a different location, installed recessed lighting, changed all of the interior doors, changed an interior cedar wall to an amazing feature wall and painted the interior. We used IBI as the contractor for our remodeling. The quality of work was excellent. The work was completed on budget except for change orders that we made during construction. When changes were needed we received bids, negotiated the work to be completed and electronically accepted the changes before any work was done. The workers on our project were excellent and professional. They continually asked us questions to be sure the work was done to meet our needs. They gave us advice and helped us make the right decisions. They were pleasant and made the experience fun. We weren't living in the house when the project was done, but we never felt uncomfortable about leaving knowing that the workers were going to do the right thing. We learned to be patient as there were delays. Sub-contractors were not always available, IBI had other clients that had deadlines that needed to be met; however, we had regular communications on reasons for delays and when they anticipated completion of tasks in the project. We have recommended IBI to friends and IBI would be our first contact if we need a contractor.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long does it take to install a hardwood floor?

Hardwood floor installation can take anywhere from a few days to more than two weeks, depending on demolition, wood type, the condition of your subfloor, total square footage of the project, and installation method. Demolition is necessary if you have existing flooring you want to replace with hardwood floors. New-construction homes do not require this step, as the subfloor is primed and ready for floor installation. During demolition, the flooring crew may find that your subfloor has damaged wood, uneven surfaces or other problems that must be addressed before the new wood can be laid down. Crews may charge on an hourly rate for subfloor repair, and the work can take a few hours to several days, depending on what’s hiding underneath your floor. The wood for your new floor generally arrives a few days before any work begins. This allows the wood to acclimate to the relative humidity in your house, which prevents it from shrinking or expanding after installation and causing gaps or buckling. The actual wood installation may take several days or more, depending on the size of your home and what type of custom cutting and designs are desired. If your flooring is not prefinished, the unfinished wood must then be sanded and stained in the home to treat and protect your new investment. Typically, stain takes a full day to dry, and multiple coats are applied. Baseboards and trim must also be installed. With all these variables at play, you can see why it’s important for a wood installation pro to provide an estimate only after seeing your home.

How much does it cost to install flooring?

On average, Thumbtack customers nationwide pay $5,500 for floor installation. The cost can range much lower or higher depending on the type of flooring you select (laminate is far less expensive than exotic hardwood), the square footage of the project, and other important variables like demolition and repair work needed. Here are some examples of average floor installation cost:

  • Basic floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • This can range up to $7 or $8 per square foot when tear-out and prep work is required.
  • Laminate floor and installation cost: $3-$8 per square foot.
    • Laminate is one of the most affordable materials and can start as low as $1.50 per square foot.
  • Wood floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • $7 and up for hand-scraped oak planks and other specialized work.
  • Luxury vinyl tile installation: $3.50+ per square foot (not including tiles).
    • Cost includes prep work, underlayment, leveling and grouting.
  • Examples of additional floor installation costs:
    • Pouring concrete to level the under-flooring: $1,000-$1,500 for materials and labor.
    • Removing carpet: 35 cents or more per square foot.
    • Removing difficult ceramic or porcelain tile: about $2.25 per square foot.
      • Includes removal of the dura rock.
  • Floor repair: $75 minimum.

How much does it cost to install hardwood floors?

The cost of hardwood floors will depend primarily on the total square footage of flooring, the type of wood you select, the cost of labor in your region, and any preparation or repair work that needs to take place before installation. Selecting exotic woods, such as teak, will result in a higher cost for the project than a more affordable wood such as oak. The national average cost of hardwood floor installation is $5,750. Here are some examples of different woods and their average costs; actual costs will vary depending on the factors listed above.

  • Basic wood floor installation: $3 per square foot from a wood floor installation company.
    • The product cost for hand-scraped ¾-inch oak planks: $7 per square foot.
  • 620 square feet of maple floor:
    • Residential installation, total project cost: ~ $2,400 with five days of labor.
    • ¾-inch dark stained maple installed on top of new concrete in three rooms, a hallways, and a staircase.
      • Cost for total project: ~$3.87 per square foot.

How much are oak hardwood floors?

Installing oak hardwood floors can add value and beauty to your home. The cost of hardwood floors is typically based on the overall square footage of your new floor, the type of oak you select, any repair work your subfloor requires prior to installation, and any demolition costs to remove your old flooring. Other factors that will affect your total cost can include the regional cost of labor and business overhead of your flooring company.

A flooring installation company may charge $3 per square foot for standard installation. For hand-scraped (higher-end) ¾-inch oak planks, the cost is approximately $7 per square foot, for a total cost per square foot of about $10 as long as no repair work is required. Standard oak planks are available from big-box stores for as low as $3 per square foot, so the quality of oak you want will affect your total project cost.
