Chris arrived on time ready to go! He installed my new water heater in less than an hour. I appreciated his attention to detail and giving me a discount for the dork I had done before he arrived. Also appreciated his flexibility, working around my work schedule. I will use him again for other projects!

We called Omar after another yard service company left us high and dry this summer. Omar and his crew came over, leveled out our front yard, added sod, and placed paver stones around the perimeter of the grass (as a mow strip). They also worked on our sprinkler system, swapped out several of the sprinkler heads, and helped us get ready for winter. Omar is a professional - he communicates well with clients, is very attentive to what the client says, wants, and needs. We will be using him in the future, and we will be having him help my senior citizen mom out with her yard as well. Highly recommend - Omar, Pancho, and the rest of the crew were wonderful!

We hired Creekscape Design to completely overhaul our backyard space. When Juan met with us the first time, we talked over how we wanted to use the space and shared some vague ideas we had - he was able to return quickly with a beautiful design for a new paver patio, retaining wall, improved irrigation and drainage, and beautiful plantings. It is a complete transformation, and we have spent many hours outdoors enjoying our "new yard". Juan was very generous with his time, answered many questions, and his crew were very respectful and efficient during the project. When the first proposed installment dates didn't work well for us, they were able to shuffle their schedule and fit our 2+ week job in without significant delay. During the job we discovered some additional needs, and they were able to make adjustments on the fly. One part of the project proved to be more complicated than expected, and Juan explained our options then removed the cost without complaint when we decided to cancel that part of the job. Juan developed the design plans at no charge, met with us a couple of times and encouraged us to look up every plant before we made any financial commitment. When there were one or two plants I wasn't thrilled with, he happily located alternatives. He also worked with us to locate paver colors that would match nicely with existing brick, and it looks great! We will not hesitate to hire Creekscape again when we are ready to work on the front yard.

A built in watering system -- sprinklers and drips -- had more geysers than area watering. Needed it fixed, things were drying out. Hank arrived when he said he would, troubleshooted what was needed and got it fixed, including some additional requests.

Ramiro was enthusiastic and confident that he would be able to solve the leak in the irrigation system. Even when it became more complicated requiring a control valve with accompanying wiring, he was able to get the job done at the estimated price. Great job!

Thomas Darnell is extremely responsive. His prices are competitive, and his service level is excellent. Thomas has been helping us with our irrigation needs for the past 4 years, including an entirely new system and when we moved, repairs to an existing irrigation system. We've referred several customers to him and will continue to do so without reservation.

Great job, Jose, on repairing my sprinkler system problems! Jose arrived right on time and knew exactly what to do to move and then replace a sprinkler head; discovered where the leak was in another sprinkler head; and replaced a broken part on a third sprinkler head. I plan to have Jose return in the Fall to winterize the sprinkler system. I highly recommend giving Jose a call to fix your sprinkler system in a professional manner and at a reasonable price.

What was supposed to be a simple value replacement ended up being a much bigger project because the original installation of my irrigation system was dated and not properly done in the first place. Larry's estimate was more than reasonable and he completed the work in a timely manner which included new valves for all zones, new blowout and shut off.

Israel did a great job of finding and repairing an underground leak in our sprinkler system. He also identified and replaced 15 sprinklers that needed replacing. My only issue was that when he gave me his bill I was really surprised at how high it was. This was because, due to communication problems, I had not come to an understanding of his rate or how he billed. Actually, at this point, I still don’t know how the bill came to be what it was because there was no written invoice. When I actually think about how much he did and how well he did it I realize that his bill was actually pretty reasonable and probably lower than it would have been from other companies. So – I believe a really hard working guy did a really good job at a good rate. He just needs to make his business process a little more professional than it is.

Max and his team are professional, competent, caring, accountable, punctual. We received a comprehensive response to our irrigation needs; he and his team repaired the system saving us considerable money. Max also found some wiring irregularities while replacing an old controller. He dealt with a hazardous situation expertly and recommended what we need for electrical repair. Other issues arose with our system while they were working and those issues were addressed and resolved. We are immensely pleased with the work they did and look forward to working with them in the future.

His service, responsiveness, work quality professionalism, the value - everything was excellent. I have given his name to several others too and plan to use him again in the early spring.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a landscape contractor do?

Landscape contractors work from outdoor architectural or design plans to build and install hardscaping or softscaping for the client, much as a general contractor uses architectural designs to build a house. Landscape contractors are experts in soil drainage, grading, hardscaping (installing concrete paths and retaining wall, building ponds, etc.), and planting. They have heavy equipment such as excavators and tractors to prepare the land as needed.

Some landscape contractors are also landscape architects or landscape designers. The titles can be compared with those in home construction: A building or landscape architect must earn a specialized architecture degree and pass an exam to have a license. A designer — whether an interior designer or a landscape designer — does not usually require a license to work. Landscape contractors are not required by law to work from plans designed by a landscape architect, so you may work directly with the landscape contractor to specify the work you’d like done. The national average cost for large-scale landscaping projects is $10,160. Pricing can vary greatly depending on the project scope, materials and design.

How do you find a good landscape architect?

Hiring a landscape architect is an investment in your home. Landscaping can reduce water bills, improve your home resale value, add to your daily living experience and significantly boost curb appeal. A landscape architect will draw the designs for your new landscape; you’ll want to hire a landscape contractor to carry out the plans. Many companies provide design-build landscaping services, with a company architect creating plans for your vision and the landscape contractor executing the vision. With the proper academic background and licensing, a person can be both landscape architect and landscape contractor. Here are a few tips for finding a great landscape architect:

  • Research online portfolios and find several landscape architects whose work interests you.
  • Read online reviews of client experiences.
  • Research whether the landscape architects you are interested in are currently licensed and in good standing with the licensing board, and check whether any complaints have been issued against them. Each state will have their own searchable database. For example, you can search for California landscape architects via the state’s Department of Consumer Affairs.
  • Request bids from your selected landscape architects.
  • Hire the one you like the most, taking care to have a clearly written contract outlining scope of work.

What should you look for when hiring a landscaper?

Landscaping can be costly — though it usually pays off in curb appeal and home resale value — so finding a landscaper who is worth the investment is important. When hiring a landscaper, look for proven success with the type of results you want. For example, if you know you want a drought-tolerant yard, research websites, reviews and portfolios that showcase beautiful drought-tolerant yards that the landscaper has installed. In addition to relevant experience, you’ll want to find a landscape contractor who has good client reviews. Good communication skills are another important quality in a landscape contractor, since everything from plant selection to hardscape installation needs to be discussed and agreed upon. A landscape contractor who is reliable, easy to understand and able to listen to what you want will help make the process seamless and enjoyable.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
