The food was delicious, and the Catering Staff were very friendly, the only issue that we had was a difference in quoted price verse actual price. They were 300.00 over what we were quoted, but I think that was due to some plates being changed.

I used S&B Event Concepts and Catering for a last minute in-home affair and I needed catering quick. It was my first time using a catering company. I setup a last-minute romantic in-home catered dinner for my wife and me. I got rid of the dogs and the kids. I shampooed the carpets and had a long-desired present ready for my wife when she walked in. In addition, when my wife walked in the S&B hostess / waitress and chef were standing (professionally dressed) adjacent to the dining room table. My wife was very surprised. The multi-course dinner, desert and event went perfectly. I worked with Sodiah from start to finish. She talked to me on the phone at times I liked -- at odd hours on occasion as she responded immediately once to my late-evening email. She always responded quickly to my calls. The food menu was huge. I picked out just the stuff I wanted. And, she kept it within my budget and not once suggesting items to raise my spending. We double checked all items and expectations including but not limited to the food selections and preparation desires, timing, supplies, etc. The table setup was complete with fine china and silverware, candles, white linens and other stuff to make it look very special. They used our kitchen and left it spotless (including the trash removal) when they left. She and her team were great to work with. They were pleasant, on-time and very professional. They remained out of site. They exceeded my expectations. They will be my go-to for in-home catering and catering for other events. I will call further in advance next time. I promise.

We have used this service 2 times. Both times, nothing short of EXCELLENT! The food was delicious and presented beautifully. It is such a wonderful treat, to have someone come into your home and prepare the food. We had a small dinner this past summer, and EVERYONE raved about the food Deirdre presented us! The food was mouth watering, magazine quality.

We couldn’t decide whether a food truck or catering would be best for our wedding; I discussed multiple possibilities over the phone and appreciated most his willingness to work with our unique needs and tight space (no kitchen on premises!). Would definitely recommend for local events.

Bee&Jay Catering was recommended from a friend. I called them and set up an appointment for tasting for my Networking Event. The were very professional and the food was delicious. They are prompt with answering questions when needed. I was contacted the day before the event to make sure nothing else was needed. The day of the event Bee&Jay Catering was on time and setup a hour before it started. Everyone enjoyed the food and couldn't stop talking about their famous meatballs. I would definitely recommend Bee&Jay Catering to anyone that needs catering for a small or big event.

I love to cook but there are days when I have so much running around to do that at the end of the day I just don’t have the time to prepare a meal. A friend told me about The Comfort Queen and how they can prep your food or deliver food to your door even cook with/for you and your family. Although skeptical I gave them a call and spoke to Michelle. She’s lively to say the least and even more so in person but we hit it off great. The prices we discussed for her services are quite reasonable and truthfully I know I spend more than that dining outside. I decided to try the Spicy Shrimp Empanadas and Oxtail Stew in red wine with capers. We arranged a time for the following week and right on schedule Michelle arrived. I showed her the kitchen and she instantly started to organize my prepared food and it smelled amazing. All I can say is even before Michelle left half of the shrimp empanadas were devoured by my family. To say that Michelle did her thing would definitely be a gross understatement. I’m already looking at setting up one of her family classes so we can cook together. Thanks Michelle and thanks to the Comfort Queen.

The Dancing Palate cooked for my thanksgiving party which had 20 guests. She did an amazing job. She arrived early to drop off the food and she was very professional. She helped me set up everything and gave me tips on how best to serve the food. The food was delicious and my guests kept talking about how good the food was. The Dancing Palate made a lot of food which I really appreciated. She came with extras. She was kind and polite the whole time.

Wild Blue Creative Catering has done multiple events for our organization over the past few years -- from exclusive executive dining to a 500 person summer employee BBQ. Their menus and food are excellent -- the executive chef takes great pride in utilizing the best food sources available. In addition, their staff is very professional and great to work with. We look forward to our next Wild Blue Creative Catering event.

The whole experience was great. Latonya worked around my schedule and was answering my emails even at 11pm at night. I think the food presentation was outstanding and everything came out great and tasty! The guests were satisfied and I was as well. Only thing I can say was that the chicken tenders were a little dry but that's due to transferring and holding. Other then that, I will be very glad to have her cater my events again. :)

This is our 4th event with Christina's Catering. They were wonderful for our parent's funeral luncheon. We found them here and liked them so much we hired them as our office caterer and company BBQ last week. We were impressed from the beginning when they handled our call and concerns with care. This was our first time hiring a caterer for a funeral luncheon and we had no idea when, where or what to do. Dan and Christina were very helpful. We loved them so much they catered 2 business meetings last month in our Philadelphia office and last week a 220 person BBQ at my home. It's obvious that they truly have many years of experience. The staff were wonderful and friendly. The food was wonderful too! Dan and Christina handled all the catering items from food, linens, staff and even the professional bartenders at our latest BBQ. We shopped a few caterers and they could not compare to Christinas. They even helped us find a local banquet room for the funeral. We recommend that you contact them for your next event. I want to start off by saying thank you to the chef and his wonderful team for everything they prepared for me and my husbands housewarming party! The chef was very reasonable with pricing and when it came to service him and his team went above and beyond to make sure everything was perfect for our night. The food was out of this world our guest couldn’t stop talking about how amazing and delicious everything was. The hit of the night was the BLT sandwiches with their special sauce and the spicy deviled eggs. The Chef was very attentive and made sure he was able to give us everything we wanted the way we wanted it. How many people can Honestly say their caterer answered their call at 11pm?? I mean he really made sure he was available 24/7 ! We were able to actually relax and enjoy our party instead of worrying about guest and food and etc. The feeling was absolutely indescribable. The chefs passion and drive was visible and made our night much more perfect! I look forward to hiring him and his team for future events!

The food and set up were awesome. The first meet to go over everything was smooth and detailed as well as professional. After that communication became a little more difficult. This was for a special needs adult and proper reciepts etc were needed. I would have given 5 stars if communication didn't lack at the most crucial times and still not getting what is needed . If I am judging by the quality of food and formal set up it is 5 Stars all the way.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good caterer?

Reviews, interviews and menu tastings will help you find the right catering choice for your big day. Start by screening possible wedding caterers based on past reviews. If a caterer you are interested in has a review that concerns you, ask them about it; how they respond will be very telling. Next, ask about their availability for your wedding date.

If the wedding caterer is available on your date, it’s time to talk about menus and prices. Be clear about what your maximum budget is find out what choices this will allow you. Caterers may custom-create a menu for your event, or they may have menu templates within different price ranges that can guide your decision. A clear budget gives the caterer clear parameters within which to work and offer creative suggestions. Schedule a menu tasting to confirm you love your wedding menu. Once you have a menu and date, and have paid a deposit to reserve the caterer’s services, confirm additional details including when the food will be delivered to the site, what kind of service will be provided, how many servers will be onsite and for how long, and who is responsible for setup and cleanup. The more specific your contract, the fewer worries you’ll have on your wedding day. Get more smart hiring tips here.

Do you tip a wedding caterer?

Tipping 15 percent to 20 percent on a $3,000 catering bill can feel daunting — especially in light of all the other costs of throwing a wedding — but tipping your wedding caterer is standard practice. Be sure to ask your caterer about their specific policies. Many catering companies include gratuity as a line item on their bill. If tipping is not automatically included in your total, a good approach is to tip all the people involved the day of the event rather than paying one lump sum to the catering company. For each server and bartender, you can tip $20-$50, depending on how long they were onsite and whether they did exceptional work. You can also tip the chef; experts suggest $50. It’s also a good idea to tip the catering manager, the point-of-contact person who keeps the catering service running smoothly the day of your wedding, ensures all the food looks beautiful and is plentiful, and resolves any mishaps. Industry pros recommend tipping the catering manager $100-$200. If gratuity is not included and you’re tipping individuals, set aside $200-$500 in cash to be safe.

How much does wedding catering cost per person?

Wedding catering costs will always vary based on the number of guests you’re inviting, the menu you want to serve, and the way the food will be served to your guests. As you interview wedding catering companies, you’ll be presented with a cost per person for various menus. On the low end, wedding catering may cost approximately $15-$18 per person. This would include prepared food only, with no setup or service of any kind. The starting price for a simple buffet meal with minimal service typically averages $22 per person. Opting for the same menu with all organic ingredients could raise your costs to about $33 per person. A moderately upscale menu (finer ingredients, more elaborate presentation) could range from $24 to $34 per person. High-end wedding catering cost truly has no limit. Lobster, filet mignon, specialty seafood, organic ingredients — menu choices like these can boost your cost per person up to $150 and more.

How much does it cost to hire a caterer?

Catering prices depend mainly on how fancy you want the food and service to be and how many guests you’ll have. When you’re first looking to hire a caterer for your event, consider how many guests you’ll have and your total food and drink budget. The national average for event catering is $340, but catering prices can range into the thousands depending on your menu, guest count, and service.

Event catering is a broad term that covers everything from fully prepared, ready-to-eat food that the hosts plate and serve themselves to full-service, multicourse meals, including rental of linens, glassware and other items, with service staff organized by the catering company. Usually a caterer will determine cost based on the type of event you’re having, how many guests will attend, the level of service you desire, and what type of menu you’d like to have. For example, if you have a set catering budget, say $1,500, and you plan to have 50 people attend, that means you have $30 per person for food. If you have the same budget with 100 people, you have $15 per person for food. In this way, the number of people you want to attend your event and the level of food you want to serve them determines how much catering will cost.

What should you look for in a caterer?

A delicious meal is a critical element of a successful wedding, with happy guests fondly remembering your fabulous wedding food. The right caterer for you will be:

    • Available: Even the best caterer is no good if they aren’t available on your wedding date. Ask early before you get your heart set on someone.
    • Affordable for you: Find a caterer that you can afford. Having a spending plan ahead of time will mean you won’t overspend on food.
    • A good personality fit: Wedding planning is stressful, so work with someone that you can get along with and communicate with easily.
    • Experienced and recommended: Ensure the company has a proven track record with events of your size and the references to back it up.
    • Transparent about money: Steer clear of shady pricing. Find a caterer who is very clear about costs and is happy to talk you through budgets and pricing options.
    • Transparent about food: Find someone who is clear about where they source their food from and where it is prepared.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
