Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Can I use digital payments to pay for moving services?

Most local moving companies are likely to accept some form of digital payment. Particularly with the COVID-19 pandemic, more companies are likely to conduct transactions through platforms like PayPal, Zelle, Square Cash, Venmo, Google Pay and more.

To ensure the mover accepts a platform you can use, you can peruse the mover’s online profile and see what is listed there. You can also ask the mover about payment policies during a consultation call.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a mover during the COVID-19 pandemic?

If you’re trying to set up a consultation or an appointment with a mover during the COVID-19 pandemic, make sure to use digital tools to avoid exposure. When searching for movers online, ask if they’d be willing to do a video chat to assess the size of your move. This will be in place of the typical “walk-through” they perform, and they may be able to give you a price quote. You can also discuss safe strategies for completing the job during your call or video chat.

How can I find out if a mover is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Your local city or state’s government website is a great resource if you’re trying to figure out whether a mover is considered an essential service provider during the COVID-19 pandemic.

For a source of national guidelines, visit the CISA website’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19. On this page, you’ll find 16 categories of critical infrastructure sectors. But note that some -- not all --  jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Does a mover need to enter my home?

A mover will likely need to enter your home -- unless you’ve placed all of your belongings outside beforehand. To stay safe during the COVID-19 pandemic, you might to consider keeping all (or most) of the work outside and/or having at-risk individuals leave the house while the movers work.

You can minimize exposure by doing a preliminary walk-through by video call instead of in person. Discuss your options with the top movers near you before hiring one.

Do movers offer remote or virtual services?

Movers generally need to be present to do their job. But if you come across a mover’s profile that states they’re offering remote services, you can contact them to see what those services include.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire a mover when social distancing?

If you decide to hire a mover, consider making adjustments to accommodate current guidelines. This may involve staying outside while the mover works inside your home or letting the mover handle only parts of the move.

It’s important to follow social distancing guidelines while performing any service work. For example, do not make physical contact with the movers, maintain at least 6 feet of distance between you at all times, and use digital payments instead of cash or a check.

What is considered a local move vs. a long-distance move?

Local moves are among the most common moves. Unlike a long-distance move, a local move is typically less than 50 miles and does not cross state lines. Generally, a local move only takes one day, and movers tend to charge by the hour.

The definition of a long-distance move may vary depending on the moving company. Generally, a long-distance considered to be any move of 400 miles or more. However, some say a long-distance move is over 50-100 miles.

Local Move

A move under 50 miles

Long-Distance Move

A move over 50-100 miles or over 400 miles; may also be called an “interstate move” or “out-of-state move”

Out-of-State Move

A move that crosses state lines; may also be called an “interstate move” or “long-distance move”

Interstate Move

A move that crosses state lines; may also be called an “out-of-state move” or “long-distance move”

Intrastate Move

A move that begins and ends in the same state, typically beyond 50 miles

Interstate moves require additional legal preparation and will incur additional costs for distance, the amount and weight of your items, the preparation required and various other factors. Moving companies tend to do an initial weighing of the truck, which you should be present for.

A move that crosses state lines is considered an interstate move or an out-of-state move. Contrast this with an intrastate move, which begins and ends in the same state, but is typically above 50 miles.

To determine whether your move is local or long-distance, contact the best movers in your area.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

Can you move furniture by yourself?

You might be able to move smaller items like nightstands, small desks, chairs and small tables by yourself. However, it’s best to get a professional mover near you to move larger items such as couches, dressers, armoires and televisions.

If you do decide to move furniture by yourself, carefully lift and lower items and take your time.

Is it cheaper to move your stuff or buy new stuff?

It often makes more financial sense to buy new stuff when you have the chance to sell furniture to offset the cost. The cost of moving your current furniture can sometimes be more than buying new things, particularly if the furniture is large or cumbersome to move. You can sell furniture online, or make a furniture donation and deduct it from your taxes (if it qualifies as a charitable contribution). Some places near you may even offer free furniture pickup when you choose to donate.

If you have valuable furniture that would be costly to replace, however, it may be cheaper to move them. To find out which option is best for you, contact professional movers in your area to receive quotes and estimates.

I scheduled them in March 2021 for a local move happening on April 3, 2021. I spoke with Emily several times about the details of the move and I paid my deposit to secure my spot. The movers were scheduled to begin between 9 and 11 a.m. on April 3rd. When the day arrived, no one showed. I never received an email or a phone call stating that my move was canceled or anything to that sort. I called several times and left message throughout the day and couldn’t get a hold of anyone at the office even though the company was stated as open. This was absolutely horrible and ridiculous. Incredibly unprofessional.

Crew showed up on time, was courteous, moved the furniture and household goods quickly and did a great job packing, protecting my items. On load on the other end was equally well executed. All was accomplished within their estimate and timeline. Will hire these folks again for my next move.

I cannot say enough good things about Chris and his crew. They moved an entire house of extremely heavy furniture up stairs, and to the basement, disassembled and reassembled without a a scratch. Their prices can't be beat. I am a pretty hard sell, but this company exceeded my expectations! Moving is stressful enough, they made it an excellent experience!

Moving is generally horrible, but if you want a smooth experience go with Great Nation Movers! I researched TONS of different companies and even got multiple quotes - this one was the most professional, provided both an in-home long distant estimate, is licensed/insured and had all the equipment needed! It's a professional service and even offers packing supplies beforehand if you need (which we, I highly, suggest). Excellent packers!!! We moved from Harrisburg, Pa to D.C and this was pack and load, and delivery next day. We had two 26 foot trucks full! And of course, the best part - the gentlemen that provided our moving services were super professional, polite, and unbelievably hard and fast working. They did such an awesome job. Not a single scratch on anything. If you feel like you need to do a ton of research and get multiple quotes, I understand. BUT -- consider saving your time, because I did it for you, and this IS the best moving company in DC. Call them and schedule already!!!

Bob was excellent to work with! He was honest and upfront with cost, responded quickly to communication and gave no bull. He arrived on time and got everything done timely with his team. He took good care of my piano moving it, and spent a lot of care and attention to stretching the strings and tuning. If you need someone affordable to move your piano, don’t hesitate to call Bob!

The experience I had with this moving company has to of been one of the worst experiences I ever had. Moving is a stressful exercise as it is and then dealing with an unprofessional and inept company made things so much worse. Prices looked good online, saw an overall positive review of the company, but, I should have done more research. Sometimes you get what you pay for. I was told that my “window for arrival” for the movers to arrive would be between 9am and 11am. I was told by Emily that I would get a phone call 30 minutes before the arrival of the movers. By 10:30 I had not received a phone call. I waited until 10:40 for the benefit of the doubt. Still no phone call. So things are already outside of the 9-11 window and I call Emily, one of the owners to inquire about not receiving a phone call. I was told she would reach out to the moving men arriving to call me for an ETA(I made this call to Emily at about 10:40). It was now 11:20 and no call from Emily or the moving men. So I called Emily back again and she told me that they called and left me a voicemail; this is not true. I get great cell service at my home and saw no missed call or no voicemail. I requested the phone number of the actual movers. I called and spoke to one of them and they told me they would be there in about 12 minutes(this was at 11:25). Well guess what? 35 minutes passed and the guys still aren't there. So well passed 12 minutes, no phone call, and no voicemails. I already knew this day was just going to be terrible when the first phone call had to be made. Communication is key and the failure of it by the movers or the owners just was already enough to doubt this move was going to go well at all. So now I am well passed the 9-11 window which they originally promised and my plans for later in the day are ruined as they would show up at about 12:20 or so. The two guys that showed up were unprepared. They had no straps, blankets, pads, or dollies to use for any of my things. I will give them the benefit of the doubt though. It seemed the other owner Todd, did not have the truck properly prepared for the two men to complete the move. How do I know this? Well that is what the two guys actually told me. They said the owner, Todd, did not have the truck and supplies ready for us(the 2 guys). Also, the straps, blankets, pad, etc all of that was in the original quote that I got that these things would be used for my move. I had to use 2 of my own personal blankets for some glass items! I had to supply the items they needed for MY move; let that sink in. They managed to get my boxes and furniture in the truck kind of like Tetris they were all in place sturdily and no damage was done; I was very surprised. Other then them getting snow on some of my things which I needed to point out to avoid getting snow on my furniture... With the absence of the required equipment and blankets for my move I called Emily and calmly told her how much anxiety and stress I have been dealing with today and explained to her the above situation.A few minutes later Todd called me. This man was very angry and snapped at me. I simply told him the guys were almost done(I do not have a lot of stuff) which they were truly almost done. He said well why are you so stressed out? I told him, well, they have no blankets or pads for my things to be protected. I explained the poor communication to Todd and also how the movers almost crashed into my wife's car while backing into the driveway(more on this soon). He said ok well I can be there with that in 45 minutes. I said the 2 guys will probably be done by then. He then said so what is the problem? The whole time on the phone with him I was just trying to explain to him the principle of the matter. No blankets or pads for my things and that I had to use my own blankets for my move, the communication, etc. So I told him to call his guy(the one of 2 guys there). Those two were then infighting on the phone with each other; it was unreal. There was also infighting between the 2 guys. As I mentioned before, they almost backed into my wife's car, the one guy was on the outside signaling the other guy(driver) how far to go. Well, the driver nearly hit him too and they were yelling at each other. I basically had to be with them the whole time to deescalate the tension and make sure none of my things got destroyed. To make matters even worse, my wife is upstairs working watching and hearing all this happen. Why does this matter? She too hired this same company for the following week. So she had just experienced the cluster I endured and she is freaking out about her move the next week. I will let her type her own review but today is the day of her move and they are already outside of her window of 1pm to 3pm...She already has dealt with attitude and rudeness from one of the owners. She and I have already had promises broken(Todd promised to be at her move personally today for her. He promised me too he would be there today. He did not show up at all today; yet another lie). I waited to post this review in an event they would be vindictive and cause my wife more stress. To say the least I will never use this moving company ever again; even if it were free. In good faith, I could never ever recommend this company to be used by ANYONE. This experience was a total nightmare. The only thing I would do is warn people to find someone else! Beware.

David and his crew were professional, polite, and extremely efficient. The day of the move had me driving across 5 states to get to Pennsylvania, so naturally I was stressed. They calmly and efficiently did my entire job in under 90 minutes, which gave me the rest of my day to unpack. They also tightned up a loose screw and put my mattress and box spring on its foundation (without me asking), which was a very nice touch. Would recommend this company to anyone.
