Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much should you pay for a pet sitter?

Pet sitting provides your precious pet with in-home care. A pet-sitter can make a brief visit during the day to provide snacks, playtime or affection, or stay at your house for one or more nights to tend to your pet. Prices for pet-sitting will vary based on length of the visit. Nationally, pet sitting prices range from $20 to $30, although prices run higher for your sitter to stay the night. Prices will also be affected by where you live in the country. Here are some examples of average pet-sitting prices based on length of time and region:

  • 30-minute visit: $17 in a small Texas town.
  • 30-minute visit: $25 in Southern California.
    • 45-minute visit: $28.
    • 60-minute visit: $32.
  • Overnight stay (10 hours): $50 in Texas.
  • Overnight stay (10 hours): $85 in Southern California.
    • 12 hours: $100.
    • 24 hours: $200. This is a good option for a sick, elderly or brand-new pet that needs constant supervision.

How much does it cost to hire a house sitter?

House-sitting can be a lifesaver when you’re leaving town for any length of time. Whether you work remotely, you’re taking a much-needed vacation, or you just want to road-trip for a few days, it’s wise to have a pro keep an eye on your house and pets while you’re gone. Your home is more likely to stay safe and you won’t have to wrangle the kitty into a kennel to travel with you. The national average pet-sitting price ranges between $20 and $30. Pet-sitting and house-sitting costs will vary based on where you live in the country and regional labor rates. Another factor in cost is how long you want the house-sitter to stay. Some people prefer to have the house-sitter stay the night at their house, perhaps to care for an elderly pet or simply to keep a watchful eye on the home at all times. Overnight stays will cost more, ranging anywhere from $50 to $100, depending on services provided. For day visits, house-sitting and pet-sitting prices will increase incrementally the longer the visit and the more service you want performed. For example, a quick 10-minute visit to feed and walk the pet and bring in the mail could be $12.50, a 25-minute visit could be $18, a 40-minute visit $25, and a 50-minute visit $32. After seeing such stellar reviews, I was shocked to experience what I did with this service. I'm based out of Philadelphia, PA. I confirmed signup over a month ago for cat sitting over the winter holidays. I received no communication about the meet and greet until I emailed them six days before my planned departure date. After three days of delayed responses, I was told I would have a meet and greet with a pet sitter yesterday, two days before I'm planning to leave for two weeks. They set an appointment time and things seemed like they were moving. Yesterday rolls around, and the sitter supposedly has a family emergency. Texts this to their boss 25 minutes before the scheduled meet and greet time. Emergencies happen. I get it. Was totally okay with a delay due to that. Claire, or whoever has been messaging me from this Thumbtack profile, says they're scrambling to find a replacement. Three hours go by (it is now 5:30-6:00pm) and I ask if I should assume the meet and greet isn't happening today. They say they're still trying. At 10:40ish last night, I get a message saying that another sitter will be visiting me for a meet and greet today. They offered 1 and 2pm. I agreed with 1pm. No calls or texts from this sitter beforehand. No communication at all. 1pm rolls around. There's still snow around, so I give them a few extra minutes before assuming anything about the lateness. 1:15, 1:20, 1:25... no messages from anyone... no calls.. 1:30 hits, and I'm furious. I had these people booked for over a month to cover a two week span that includes holidays, which makes it extremely difficult to find a replacement. After the first meet and greet cancelation, I very luckily got a message from a friend saying that her brother lives in Philly and can help if this falls through. I told this company that, and offered for them to cancel on me so they don't have to worry about finding a backup. Instead of doing that, they insisted on the meet-and-greet today that turned out being a no-show. I sent them a message at 1:30 saying I'm canceling. I've given them over an hour and a half to send some form of response, but I have gotten nothing. I don't know what has happened with this pet sitting service, but they are NOT reliable. Please look elsewhere. This has been an extremely frustrating experience, and I am lucky that I have someone as a backup.
