Ed is an excellent eletrician and we would highly highly recommend him based on several criteria, including but not limited to, professionalism, quality of work, affordabality, patience with all our questions and other estimates. We had him install and run new wire for a new switch and light fixture in our bathroom remodel project. We will be using Ed in the future to maintain and update our electrical amd fixtures in our 1920's home for sure.

Mr Clifton Davis did a good job on installing my 2 toilets and vanity in my bathrooms. He went above and beyond when I had purchased a solid backed vanity, which would not work with my old house pipes. He offered to come to my house to help me return the first purchase and then take the new vanity to my house for installation. This was on the second day because he also worked with my on starting the job both days at 3 pm so I didn't have to take off work. Great attention to detail and concern that everthing worked as it should. He measured for my next project. I already have plans for more work as I can afford it throughout this year. Thanks, Clifton.

Joel responded quickly to my request for a quote to paint the master bedroom and master bathroom. Since we were flexible with timing, he communicated often regarding his availability and anticipated start date. We were pleased with finished walls and feel that we got what we were expecting for a very reasonable rate.

Dave and his crew removed laminate and wood floors in my hallway and bath. They installed ceramic tiles. The tile work is outstanding! While working, they found a structural issue with my house and addressed it immediately. They were very professional. I highly recommend Dave and his crew!

I am so happy I hired Damian. I just recently moved and I have a long list of items that I need completed. I hired Damian because he is knowledgeable about everything from plumbing, to electrical, to hanging TVs, he's very professional, and I felt I could trust him the moment I met him. I recommended him to my sister who has hired him to remodel her kitchen and bathroom. She felt the same way I did, that you could really trust Damian and he will give you an honest answer to your questions. Damian knows his stuff and I would definitely recommend him!! I look forward to hiring Damian for many future projects!!!

Brooks was on time, honest, professional and even picked up the vanity from Lowe’s on his way over to my house. He went out of his way to make sure I was satisfied. Even when everything was installed, he rechecked his work. I only hire local, home businesses, and my usual plumber retired. Happily, I have a new plumber!

Amazing work! Jeff did some painting for my downstairs and bathroom. He was able to fix a leak that was coming from the wall of the sink vanity. He also completed painting of my basement and kitchen and doing some trim work. He was very professional and responsive in taking initiative of what needed complete in the home and even was able to give suggestions on how to do the project. You'll be satisfied with his work! I have since hired him on to put up doors and do dry wall and other sink and light fixtures!

We highly recommend Eric Plomchok and Second Nature Home Improvements. We engaged Eric to take down a wall between our kitchen and dining room, remove cabinetry and a desk and to install 11 sets of cabinets, cabinetry and ceiling lighting, shelving and wallpaper. The result is amazing. The finished ceiling blends so well that it is impossible to see where a wall might have been. Eric’s care and attention to detail in all of the work he completed is extraordinary. No seams are visible in the wallpaper, the numerous relocated electrical switches and outlets are in perfect places and no nail marks are visible in the cabinetry. The last bit of work left of the original job is matching the wooden floor boards where the wall once stood and we trust that, given his track record so far, this will be completed soon and will look terrific. Eric is professional, friendly and always cleaned up at the end of the day. He was also very patient when changes were made to original plans. We came to think of him as family and to trust him in the house when no one was home. We were so impressed with his work and so reluctant to see him go that we kept finding other things since he was so proficient in so many areas! In addition to the original work he was engaged to do, we also engaged him to help install new electronic temperature controls and a keypad system for our garage doors. Unfortunately, now that Eric has completed the extension of the kitchen in such exemplary fashion, the rest of the kitchen looks old and tired and needs updating! As a result, we have asked Eric to provide estimates for the kitchen update as well as a remodel for our master bathroom. Again, we highly recommend Eric and Second Nature Home Improvements! Jeff put tile in our shower and laid a tile floor in our bathroom and entranceway. He has great suggestions if you aren't sure what you want. And we still receive compliments on how beautiful the bathroom & flooring look. I definitely recommend his services and will use him myself in the future if/when the need arises.

Nate was a pleasure to work with. He was very professional and thorough. We ran into multiple challenges when installing my vanity but he went above and beyond to make sure everything was installed correctly in a timely manner. I would recommend Nate to anyone looking to have work done at their home. I’m already thinking of my next project.

Tyler did a great, professional job on our bathroom remodel. His attention to detail was excellent. Tyler kept us informed clearly and frequently. Excellent demeanor. We will be using him again to paint two rooms next week. He has been arguably the best contractor we have used for needed work at our home since we moved to Harrisburg four months ago.

We had a total redo of the bathroom and kitchen, in addition we had some outside work done. It seemed no job was too big or to small. Rooms look great and functional. There were times when the techs were thinking about things like what side should the cabinet door open from and readjusting it from it original position to accommodate our kitchen set up. Extra care was given to details and any time something needed it they were able to handle it in a timely fashion with quality work being the result. Suzanne

Josh and his crew arrived on time, were very courteous, helped me move some things I could not, did an excellent job, left the basement in good order and clean from the dust. I have recommended them to my friends and neighbors and will call Josh when I decide to redo the bathroom.

David Lewis remodeled my bathroom which included painting, removal of a wall and its reconstruction with glass block, and installing new plumbing. He wasn't expecting the extremely heavy porcelain tub I bought, but he went above and beyond to obtain help to move, place and install it without complaint. The job was completed in a timely manner and everything was clean and fully ready when he told me it would be. David has also repainted every room in the house, changed out outlets and installed new overhead lighting throughout. His work is always of high quality, done efficiently, and on budget. When he is done, every area is left clean and spotless. David continues to be my "go-to" guy for all of my house projects.

Keystone flooring installed a floating laminate wood floor in my living and hall areas. They also installed ceramic tile in my bathroom. In my shower they installed ceramic with numerous inlays. The product selection process and the installation were both done very professionally.

Mr. Shifflet is trustworthy, intelligent, imaginative, and creative in his approach to remodeling. Steve genuinely enjoyed the challenges involved in removing a garden tub and installing a wheelchair accessible shower in our master bathroom, which was built on a slab. He also replaced what was the shower with a laundry facility, giving us an extremely functional and lovely space. In the midst of this project my husband required a triple bypass and was hospitalized for two weeks necessitating leaving Mr. Shifflet and his employees alone in our home for extended periods. We never had any reason for concern about the security of our property. He even walked my son's dog when my son came from out of town to visit his father in the hospital! Mr. Shifflet is also communicative, keeping us advised of his work schedule and being flexible in accommodating our needs in scheduling. He is a decent person of good character and a sense of humor and we are appreciative of having crossed paths with him.

Tom is now my go-to guy! His first impression was made when he showed up to do the estimate for my bathroom remodel when he said he would-on time. I am a landlord with many properties that often need work. Reliability is important to me and Tom has completed three jobs for me including an emergency heating situation. He was immediately responsive, dealt well with my tenant and took care of the problem quickly at a reasonable cost. Couldn't ask for more!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good handyman?

Finding a good handyman can change your life. Within days, the endless list of insurmountable tasks that were either out of your skill range or impossible to fit into your busy schedule can be completed. If you know you want help but aren’t sure how to hire the right pro, ask these questions to find the right fit:

  • What is your work experience? If you are putting in a tile backsplash, you want someone experienced with the task, not someone who generally does painting and junk removal.
  • How much do you charge? Handymen often charge hourly rates that vary based on the complexity of the task they’re hired to do, as well as flat rates for standard jobs. Be clear about what they’ll charge before you hire them.
    • On that note, discuss payment details. It’s wise not to pay all the money up front, especially for larger projects. You may be able to pay a deposit for materials and pay the remainder upon project completion.
  • How long will the job take you to complete? If the handyman is as busy as you are and a fence repair is going to take months, you should probably find another qualified handyman for the job.

Read client reviews and follow up with references to make sure you’re choosing the right handyman for your projects. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

What does a handyman do?

A handyman is a skilled laborer who provides basic home repairs. Anyone can call themselves a handyman, although most who do so are skilled with repairs and home projects. Reading reviews is a good way to determine their fitness for your job. The tasks a handyman can perform include assembling furniture, painting interiors and exteriors, repairing fences, repairing broken doors or replacing trim, hanging lights, hooking up appliances, and much more. Handymen may have flat fees for certain services, or charge an hourly rate. Handyman rates are often lower than those of a contractor, as they don’t have the same specialization. Some states have no limit on the work a handyman can perform, while others do. For example, California’s Building and Professions Code section 7048 (small operations) permits handymen to provide work similar to that of a contractor (floor installation, painting, etc.) provided the total cost of labor and materials does not exceed $500. A handyman is a great resource for minor home repairs at a lower cost than a licensed contractor, but for more complex projects, it pays to hire a specialized contractor. Fore more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much does a handyman charge?

The national average rate for handyman jobs is $90-$160. A handyman performs general maintenance and repairs for residential and commercial properties. A handyman may charge a flat fee for standard services that take a predictable amount of time, such as installing a new appliance, as well as an hourly rate for larger projects such as digging out and replacing a rotted fence post. A cost-saving strategy when hiring a handyman is to bundle all the tasks you want them to do into one visit to make the most of any minimum service fee. Hourly rates for a handyman can average $50-$100 per hour. Pricing will depend on skill and experience required for the job, as well as regional labor rates. Here are a few examples of average handyman flat rates.

  • Attic ladder replacement: $150.
  • Toilet replacement: $75.
  • Ceiling fan and light fixtures: $75.
  • Faucet replacement: $125.
  • Garbage disposal: $75.

Can a handyman do plumbing?

In some states, a handyman can provide plumbing services, but it may be in your best interest to call a plumber, particularly for issues more major than unclogging a drain or attaching a new sink. Hiring a plumber is important because mishandling your water and gas lines has the potential to do great damage to your home, your family’s health, or even the safety of your neighborhood. A handyman is not legally required to have any training or licensing in plumbing matters, while a licensed plumber has undergone years of education and on-the-job training. In some cases, homeowners insurance won’t cover damage caused by plumbing repair done by an unlicensed handyman.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, most plumbers learn their trade through a four- or five-year apprenticeship with 2,000 hours of paid on-the-job training. They also receive classroom education including “safety, local plumbing codes and regulations, and blueprint reading. They also study mathematics, applied physics, and chemistry. After completing an apprenticeship program, plumbers … are considered to be journey workers, qualifying them to perform duties on their own,” according to the DOL. Licensed plumbers should do continuing education to keep abreast of safety and technology changes. Poor plumbing can lead to sewage backups, a flooded home or even natural gas leaks, so it’s best to leave it in the hands of a specialized professional.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
