David M. Glasgow, musician (West Shore location)

    (16 reviews)

Music teachers tend to fall into two categories: either they're conservatory-minded folks who dream of seeing their students on Broadway, at Carnegie, or at the Met; or they're casual musicians trying to make a few bucks by "sharing the love." And while there's nothing inherently wrong with either approach, I'm a horse of a different color in that I have the credentials of a college music professor (I taught at Dickinson College for a decade), but prefer to work with students who simply want to enjoy music-making as part of a rich, happy life, whatever their career goals. I love helping a student to find their own voice--whether that's the song they share with their vocal folds, the music they draw out of a piano with their fingers, or the sounds they imagine onto paper for others to share. There's a light that goes on in a musician's eyes when they discover "who they are" as an artist for the first time, and it comes back every time they do something they didn't think they could do before. Those are the moments that make me love teaching.

When teaching music to students, I want to make it fun for them! There are a lot of people who have had bad experiences; not because of music, but because their teacher may not have been the right personality for them. My students have individual ways of learning and so I choose books and sheet music based on their learning styles. If my students want a particular piece to play, I will even arrange it for them so they can learn to play what they want to play! I love working with students of all ages one on one with their instrument. I have a passion for music and I love when I'm able to see that passion or enjoyment in them as well!

Because I have specialized training, I am able to systematically determine how a student learns. I, therefore, design individualized curricula for each student to maximize our utilization of their learning potential. Being in lessons! I love getting to know each student, especially getting to know them as a musician. Helping them to realize their inner musician is the most rewarding aspect of the work that I do.

I am actively involved with my students for every minute of their lessons, whether I am listening, demonstrating, or playing along with them. My goal is for students to love and enjoy music, to make playing a regular part of their lives, and to develop as musicians, so we spend time on not only repertoire, theory, and technique but also on learning how to practice. I do not employ a cookie-cutter style of teaching (i.e., working mechanically through a particular set of method books) since each student is an individual with individual needs. I am thrilled to hear students develop as musicians, to see them concentrate and work hard and achieve mastery. There's nothing better.

  • Mary E. Firestone, Private String Lessons

    (3 reviews)

In teaching different types of students I try to find what piece or pieces of music are the most interesting to them. The parts of importance vary between the youth and the adult student, as well as between males and females. What doesn't seem to change is the power their interest holds in their connection to and passion for music. From naming an instrument and reviewing the proper care for some, or playing The Beatles arranged for viola for others, to performing for friends and family; I believe that I offer the ability to match the needs and wants of most students. The best thing about teaching music for me is the shared experience of your student feeling that connection or passion for music. You are able to share in their pride and honor as they share their abilities with the world.

Lessons in the Key of G

(19 reviews)

What do you love about your job?

I love that I am helping people discover themselves and develop skills that will stay with them for the rest of their lives. Each student is so unique and it is a great pleasure to have the opportunity to get to know them so well that I can tailor their lessons. My absolute favorite part is seeing them succeed and reach their goals, whether it's a big performance or a skill-level accomplishment. I strongly believe that everyone can succeed in music given the right support.

Who or what inspired you to start your business?

I put myself through college completely independently. Starting a business was the only job choice that allowed me to make a livable wage while affording myself the flexible hours that I needed for school. At the suggestion of my former teacher, I started Lessons in the Key of G. Starting up has been slow and doing this independently is strenuous, but seeing my students succeed is worth every ounce of stress.
