Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Can a handyman repair a roof?

A handyman may be able to repair simpler problems on a roof, such as damaged shingles or gutters. However, it’s important that you hire a pro who’s properly trained and skilled to handle your roof repairs. When in doubt, research the licensing requirements in your state, and review several handymen and roofers before making a decision.

Is it better to repair or replace a roof?

It depends on the severity of the damage. If a falling branch or a windstorm damages an isolated patch of shingles, you could probably repair it. However, if the underlayment is damaged or if the whole roof is showing signs of wear, you might need to replace it.

Always have a professional roofer near you assess the roof before making a decision.

Is it worth it to hire a roofer?

There are several reasons why it’s worth it to hire a professional roofer instead of attempting it yourself. The first is safety. Roofing is inherently dangerous, as a fall from a roof could seriously injure or kill you. Roofers have specialized equipment and training to help prevent accidents.

Next is experience. Roofers know how to spot problems (leaks, missing shingles, moss or mold growth, etc.)  in your roof that could potentially save you from costly repairs down the road.

And finally, roofers save you time by getting the job done quickly and with a high degree of quality.

Does a roofer need to enter my home?

Generally, a roofer will likely not need to enter your home. The bulk of the work takes place on and around the edges of the roof, where roofing material meets either dormer walls or other structures. So, there is usually no need for person-to-person contact. However, there might be some cases where a roofer needs to enter your home, perhaps to inspect damage or access electrical outlets.

You can take care of any consultation calls using video chats, photos and emails, and payment should take place on virtual platforms. Put together a strategy with any local roofing professionals you contact.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a roofer during the COVID-19 pandemic?

Because social distancing is important during the COVID-19 pandemic, it’s recommended that you message roofers after narrowing down your choices through an online search of local roofers near you.

Ask if the roofer is willing to conduct an assessment via video chat rather than a traditional site inspection. Additionally, strategize on what other steps you can collectively take to make sure you’re following guidelines on social distancing during this time, including conducting a virtual payment.

Can I use digital payments to pay for roof installation, replacement or repair?

Digital payment platforms are common among roofers, roof repair companies and other services. The COVID-19 pandemic will likely cause more service providers to adopt platforms like PayPal, Zelle, Google Pay, Square Cash, Venmo and others instead of cash or check to decrease the risk of transmission.

You can typically find out whether roofers accept digital payments on their online profiles, and you should confirm this information with them during a consultation call.

How can I find out if a roofer is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

To find out whether a roofer is an essential service provider during the COVID-19 pandemic, start by visiting your state or city’s government website. Local governments are providing up-to-date information for residents during this time.

A national guideline is available on CISA’s website, Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19. This page addresses 16 different categories of essential infrastructure sectors, but note that not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Do roofers offer remote or virtual services?

To find out the degree to which a roofing service can operate remotely, it’s best to contact local roofers and roofing repair specialists near you.

See if they will schedule a video call so that you can show them the project and get an idea of the cost. This will also allow them to give you recommendations on the type of roofing material, and the best time of year to do the project. You might also be able to book a roof installation or repair service far out in advance.

Roof repairs-I had to go in the office, so I couldn’t be there for the repairs to be done. His didn’t sit well with me, however, Devan put my fears at ease by answering my calls while working and letting me know what he was working on and the additional problems that he found while making the repairs. Definitely would hire again.

Great work, fair prices, professional service! What a great experience! I had a leak in my rubber roof. They showed up for the estimate and work promptly and even when running a few minutes late, I was notified. While they were on the roof, they didn't just do the job, they looked for any other issues and made recommendations. I have already had them clean the gutters, do maintenance on my shingle roof and a small tile repair project. I will definitely use them again.

I hired this contractor to detect a leak in my chimney/roof and repair it. Their website lists leak detection as a service they provide. They came, told me where they thought the leak was coming from and did the work and everything seemed to work out fine. Then we noticed water damage inside our home again and contacted Nate to come back and take a look. He proceeded to admit he had a alcoholic working on our house and that this worker did not do the chimney repair the way he would have done it himself. He said the worker did not clean out the cut and he believed that was what caused the water damage. I asked him if he would cover the $360.00 it would cost us to fix the interior water damage and he became extremely defensive and was down-right unprofessional about it. He made awkward and immature comments towards me, he made the excuse that at the time I hired him, he wasn’t able to offer leak detection and overall made me feel terrible for trying to ask him to “make things right.” Please beware, he doesn’t offer warranties on workmanship for repairs only offers lifetime warranties on shingle roof installs. This whole experience came down to Nate not caring about customer service. He rather defend poor workmanship than make things right with a customer. I hope anyone considering hiring this contractor holds Nate accountable for what he claims are offered services (like leak detection) and if you can’t ensure Nate does the work than don’t go with him because the worker he hired was not capable of doing the job.
