I suffered from chronic and pervasive anxiety and depression, but after just 6 sessions with Dennis, it was gone! It has been more than 9 months and I am still amazed at how well it worked. I had spent years in and out of therapy with very little results and I was skeptical, but it did and it was not hard at all. I am also now happily in a relationship that is healthy and loving. I owe it all to Dennis!

After seeing a copious amount of mental health professionals, I’ve finally found my match! I've been to many different therapists over the course of my life and tried a number of therapeutic modalities however, unsuccessful for the reason I was not receiving any results. I assumed I was strong enough to handle painful life journeys w\out any help. With having trust issues & being betrayed by people, I knew I had to navigate through this thing called life on my own. With no warnings, more issues added that were out of my control. No words could describe my pain nor the drastic painful changes I had to accept. Came to the conclusion I was being delusional w/myself assuming I didn’t need help. People I assumed cared about me couldn’t help me even if they wanted to. I became desperate and no longer wanted to suffer!!! I knew if I wanted to be around for my daughter along w/making sure she didn’t walk in my footsteps, I had to get a village around the two of us. I knew that I had a task ahead of me: finding a new therapist and psychiatrist that I could connect w\and w\a practice that wouldn’t give me an appointment 2 to 3 month out. Googled therapist near me and read over 20 or so bio’s and expertise. With me being picky and cautious, I narrowed my search to 4 people in mind. Out of the 4 I called Dr. Alston. Less than an hour, she called me back. Not a receptionist or intake department, the actual person I would share my deepest secrets with. She & I spoke on the phone and I told her briefly my situation along w/hard issues w/money. I told her what I could afford since she works on a sliding scale and we agreed upon a rate. When I first started seeing her, I was in emotional agony. I could barely articulate my words or function due to my stress level. I was mentally & physically jaded. I went through a major transition in my life which left me full of fear, anger, and hopelessness. Of course, I was nervous sharing a lot of me yet she remained stoic & concerned. Not at all did I leave the way I felt when I arrived!!! I myself was surprised. From that day on, I see her once a week. Actually, twice a week. My daughter has her own therapy sessions as well & once a month we have a session together. What I love about Dr. Alston · No waiting or seeing other clients · Have evening hours and available Saturdays & Sundays 😊 · Front door parking · She works w/my budget · Not only is she working w/me, she’s working w/my daughter whom by the way reminds me of her appointments · Tranquil environment w/welcoming aroma · Safe Zone · It’s an investment in my daughter & I future · Her unparalleled approach has changed my daughter & I relationship 😊 · She has helped me w/resources I never knew existed & go above & beyond Even though she is empathetic, she isn’t afraid to call me out when she feels like something isn’t healthy for me. It might take some trial & error finding the right therapist/psychology for yourself or family yet the process can make a profound difference in your life!!! Though still in progress, Dr. Alston along w/me wanting help for my daughter & I have taken me from lost to SOLID! So many misconceptions abound about what it means to talk to a mental health professional. The need to talk about your emotions is seen as something to poke fun at, weak or shameful. After many failed attempts, I assumed this to be true until I found Dr. Alston. Sorry for the long review yet she has changed my life!!!! Understand, I’m a very private person & for me to find time & write a review is a big deal. I must thank God for answering my prayers through some painful tears just when I was giving up. Through Him, He has giving my daughter & I peace of mind by uniting us w\Dr. Alston. Something w/in told me to write down a review on my experience yet I shared more than I anticipated. Nonetheless, I hope someone reads it & know to never give up on searching for your right match. It has taken me over 20 years to find the right one. THANK YOU, Alston & Associates Counseling & Psychotherapy!

I have know Kim Boucher personally and professionally for over 7 years and during this time she has become not only a close professional associate, but also a dear and loyal friend and a powerful energy healer. We first met at my apartment in Randallstown after I was discharged from the hospital and was not strong enough for outpatient physical/occupational therapy and Kim had helped to develop the P.T./O.T. program for the Baltimore County Health Department and came to my home to evaluate me for P.T. and O.T. I was in a frantic state and could not find my hospital discharge papers which I needed to show Kim and had a emotional "meltdown." Somehow despite all this, Kim saw through all my drama and we connected. Over time, we became friends and went to a number of workshops together in different locations. Also when I became ill and was doing all I could to avoid hospitalization, but was not strong enough to drive, Kim went and got my groceries and picked up my prescriptions for me. She continued to be a friend in good times and bad, since our initial connection. When Kim decided to start her children's center, Unlimited Possibilities for Children in the fall of 2012, she shared with me her dream and visions as well as what efforts she was making. I felt in many ways, that I was an integral part of the development of her center and made a number of recommendations of possible staff. During this initial period and until the present time, I have been able to "give back" to Kim by assisting her in any way I possibly could often doing computer searches for her in the development of the center and center programs. She has also been incredibly helpful and supportive to my life partner, Luis, who had suffered from depression after his late wife died. Her energy work on him had significant effect and both Luis and I have profound respect, love and admiration for Kim in all she does for others, in her kindness, compassion, and great skill as a healer and in her integrity. Clearly I highly recommend Kim for any position and especially in the work she now does in energy healing and in her vision to help children.

My husband and I went to counseling after experiencing a miscarriage and we were amazed by the difference it made in our relationship. Mitzie always found a way to make the both of us feel heard and we really became stronger as a couple. I'm thinking about going back to see her on my own now that we finished couple's therapy.

After a car accident in college I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia. I suffered with chronic pain for years. Massage therapy became a major component in my rehabilitation. In experiencing such life-altering results, I was inspired to move to Portland Oregon and begin my training in massage therapy. Attending East West College of the Healing Arts, I was trained in both eastern and western modality massage with a focus on crainosacral therapy. After graduation, I studied reflexology with the Oregon School of Massage and Qi gong reflexology, with Supreme Qi Gong Science. In 2013, I moved back to Pennsylvania. To continue to add to my bodywork tool box, I have taken seminars on myofascial release and polarity therapy, and I am also trained in Reiki. I have worked in clinical settings, spas, and wellness centers. With my diverse training, I feel confident that I can help you achieve your wellness goals. After discussing your needs, my mission is to provide pain relief and relaxation in a welcoming, tranquil environment.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What are the types of psychologists?

Psychologists are healthcare professionals who use scientific methods to understand the relationships between the brain, environment and behavior. Psychologists may focus on research — studying how the brain and various environments drive behaviors to better understand the issues that trouble patients and society as a whole — or they may focus on practice — interacting with people using therapeutic methods. The American Psychological Association shares some of the more prevalent types of psychologists:

    • Clinical psychologists assess and treat mental, emotional and behavioral disorders.
    • Cognitive and perceptual psychologists study human perception, thinking and memory.
    • Community psychologists work to strengthen the abilities of communities, settings, organizations and broader social systems to meet people’s needs — such as improving support for victims of natural disasters, or working to improve health policies.
    • Counseling psychologists help people understand and take action on everyday issues, career and work problems, and serious adversity.
    • Developmental psychologists study the psychological development of the human being throughout life.
    • Educational psychologists concentrate on how effective teaching and learning take place.
    • Engineering psychologists conduct research on how people work best with machines.
    • Environmental psychologists study the dynamics of how people interact with their environments.
    • Evolutionary psychologists study how evolutionary principles such as mutation, adaptation and selective fitness influence human thought, feeling and behavior.
    • Experimental psychologists study cognitive processes, comparative psychology (cross-species comparisons), and learning and conditioning.
    • Forensic psychologists apply psychological principles to legal issues.
    • Health psychologists specialize in how biological, psychological and social factors affect health and illness.
    • Industrial/organizational psychologists apply psychological principles and research methods to the workplace to improve productivity, health and the quality of work life.
    • Neuropsychologists and behavioral neuropsychologists explore the relationships between brain systems and behavior.
    • Quantitative and measurement psychologists focus on methods and techniques for designing experiments and analyzing psychological data.
    • Rehabilitation psychologists work with stroke and accident victims, people with mental disabilities, and those with developmental disabilities caused by such conditions as cerebral palsy, epilepsy and autism.
    • School psychologists assess and counsel students, consult with parents and school staff, and conduct behavioral interventions when appropriate.
    • Social psychologists study how a person’s mental life and behavior are shaped by interactions with other people.
    • Sport psychologists help athletes refine their focus on competition goals, become more motivated, and learn to deal with anxiety and fear of failure around competition.

    What is a psychologist?

A psychologist is a professionally trained mental health professional who helps patients navigate challenging life situations or mental health issues. To become a psychologist you must earn a doctoral degree; qualifying degrees include a Ph.D., Psy.D. or Ed.D. To actively practice, a psychologist must be licensed in their state and maintain good standing. Psychologists are trained to administer tests that can evaluate a patient’s cognitive strength and weaknesses, intellectual skills, vocational aptitude and preference, personality characteristics, and neuropsychological functioning, explains the American Psychological Association (APA).

A psychologist meets with patients in an office and may work with a variety of methods, depending on patient need, such as cognitive, behavioral or interpersonal.  According to the APA, common reasons a person may visit a psychologist include:

    • Dealing with depression, anger or anxiety over a long period of time.
    • Help with a chronic condition that is interfering with their lives or physical health.
    • Help with grieving and other abrupt transitions.
    • Overcoming addictions.
    • Managing chronic illness.
    • Breaking old and harmful patterns of thinking or behavior.

Can a clinical psychologist write prescriptions?

To be able to write a prescription, a clinical psychologist must practice in a state that permits them to do so, and must either have a master’s degree in psychopharmacology or have completed the required advanced training program. According to the American Psychological Association (APA), five states currently permit psychologists to write prescriptions: Idaho, New Mexico, Illinois, Iowa and Louisiana. Many psychologists who are not able to write prescriptions work in partnership with psychiatrists, pediatricians or primary care doctors to help their patients who need medication.

    How much do therapists cost?

If you are experiencing a challenging time, have mental health difficulties, or just want professional guidance as you move through life, a therapist can provide relief, tools and structure. The national average cost for a therapist is $80-$100 per hour, although prices may be higher or lower depending on geographic location and the experience and training of the therapist.

Psychiatrists, psychologists and licensed therapists are all health professionals who offer various modalities of therapy. Ask questions about the type of therapy they specialize in (such as cognitive or behavioral, etc.) and their area of expertise (such as grief, anxiety, body image disorders, etc.) to help you find the right fit for your needs. Therapy sessions are typically 50-60 minutes long.  The patient usually meets with the therapist in their office; sessions may also be held remotely (via Skype, etc.) or in a clinical setting. Psychologists, psychiatrists and other therapists who have earned advanced degrees will typically charge higher rates than other licensed therapists. Depending on your diagnosis, your health insurance may cover your therapy costs.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
