I was very pleased with the professionalism, skill and attention to detail that Saul and his assistant provided yesterday. This was a relatively straightforward carpentry repair project -- replacing a damaged wooden balustrade on our front porch, and repairing woodpecker damage on the portico above it. The price was fair, and Saul even reduced it slightly when he realized that the job took less time than he had anticipated. An excellent experience all the way around.

I was so thankful to find Rick! I had several different woodworkers come out to quote my job. They were ridiculously overpriced! I needed a bookcase/office unit. I originally thought I would order something from Arhaus but the fit wasn't going to be perfect for the price. Rick showed me his work and I was immediately impressed. After a few sketches he was able to design build and install exactly what I wanted. He was very professional and patient with me. I changed a few things along the way. I appreciated the fact that he thought through details I didn't even think of. (Proper draws for files, ventilation for my router, proper spacing for return vents on my wall so unit didn't interfere.) Definitely worth the money and the minimal wait for custom work.

I hired Ray to repair the woodwork surrounding a bay window in my farmhouse that my dog had destroyed. He was prompt in his reply, provided a fair estimate, completed the work on time and was professional and friendly. Importantly, his expertise left the windowsill looking as good as new at a fair price. I highly recommend Ray's services and, in fact, have asked him to bid on a larger project.

When we decided to update our kitchen and laundry area, we had proposals from a few companies but I just had a good feeling when I met Bruce from Bellemoor Builders. We awarded the job to Bruce and have never regretted our decision. This was a major project that took everything down to bare studs, ceiling, and floor joists. It involved structural changes and intricate woodwork and required a number of other companies to provide necessary mechanical work. Bruce approached the entire project with a methodical, well thought out plan and came up with great solutions when faced with needing a Plan B. The result is the kitchen and Butler's pantry of our dreams! We already have a number of other projects in mind for Bruce now that he and his son Bryan are part of our family. Hire Bellemoor Builders! You'll be very glad you did.

I needed a custom table due to the length of my sectional. Dominick came out to gain full understanding of what I needed. He sent picture updates of the work in progress and delivered a quality product with the exact measurements to my door just a few short days later. He's personable, professional and does a great job!

Scott did a great job! He is kind, conscientious, thorough, creative and thoughtful in offering solutions for all kinds of home repair work. He has a lot of patience and takes his time to get things right. He helped my parents with drywall repair mainly, some woodwork & hardware replacement. Just one small comment I suggest to Scott is to better communicate your overall plans for getting the job done, with your clients, before beginning the work. It might help the client & you be more aware of what is ahead. Thank you Scott. I would definitely recommend him and already have to some friends in the area.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who is a carpenter and what do they do?

Carpenters are skilled craftsmen who build things out of wood. Depending on what the carpenter builds, they may be referred to by various names. A framer is a carpenter who puts up the framing on a house. A trim or finish carpenter installs the finishing touches of prefabricated or custom trim and detail work once a house has been built and the walls are up. A furniture maker or woodworker builds furniture — such as tables, beds and dressers — out of wood. A cabinetmaker is a carpenter who builds custom and semi-custom wood cabinets. If you’re having a home built or remodeled, your general contractor will either provide or subcontract the carpentry work for the framing, cabinets and trim. You can hire a carpenter directly to update the trim in your home, build you a piece of custom furniture, or repair or replace your wood cabinets.

    Do carpenters build houses?

Carpenters are trained to work with wood. That means that any part of your home that is built of wood is very likely to involve a carpenter. Framing carpenters will put up the wood that makes up the bones of your home. If you’re having a wood floor installed, it may be done by a carpenter — although being a carpenter is not a requirement to install flooring. Trim, baseboards, wainscoting and any other detail work is typically installed by a finish carpenter. The wood boxes of custom cabinets will be built and installed by a carpenter.

Although all of these components in your new or remodeled home are built by carpenters who specialize in building things with wood, a general contractor typically oversees construction of the entire house. If the general contractor is also a carpenter skilled in all these areas, they may well construct your entire home. More often, the general contractor subcontracts out the various building stages to different individuals, including carpenters.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
