Tony was a pleasure to work with. His meal ( apps, salad, pasta course, entree and dessert ) were superb and his wine parings excellent! Tony arranged a "wine pairing" with each course so we and our guests could experience how wines from bearing the same name (two Rieslings; two Cabs, etc.) could have very different origins, flavors - and price points. Tony even arrange a blind tasting of two unexpected wines and our guests found it both educational as well as entertaining. Tony and his sous chef, Kim, were organized, professional and left our kitchen looking like it had looked immediately before he arrived. I would highly recommend Tony for you next special event!

Hog Day Afternoon BBQ (HDA) has catered for me 3x. Two times for an office picnic that she has brought everything to a park, set up and had ready on time. Enough food even for leftovers. Then once I had an appetizer party at work. Everbody was happy with what she bought and again enough for everyone. Food has always been good and plenty of it. HDA goes out of their way to make sure everything goes well and is happy.

I had a cocktail party and needed appetizers. Chef Anton followed up promptly and stayed in touch throughout the planning stage all the way up to the night of the party. He was actually early which was nice since some guests came early. People loved the pot stickers and shrimp. The cheesesteak egg rolls were my favorite as well as the tomatoes. We had plenty of food. The cocktail party was a great success and I have to believe this was due in part to the great apps! I’m very happy. I was highly recommended Feast Caterers!

I attended a private party last night. Catered by Taste of Paradise. Wow! Homemade meatballs like my grandmother from south philly used to make! Roast pork sandwiches with real sharp provalone, manicotti , seafood Newburgh , chicken Parmesan , fire grilled vegetables and antipasto salad with the perfect blend of seasoning . Not only was the food exceptional, the severs were as well! I would highly recommend them for any occasion

We celebrated our 1st year wedding anniversary and hosted a cocktail party for the occasion with approximately 50 guests. We hired Kulinary Kings to prepare an assortment of hors d'oeuvres that consisted of beef, chicken and seafood. In addition to dessert. Chef Gregory Evans prepared the food to perfection. Everything he prepared was so delicious. The chicken salad on gourmet black pepper cracker and the filet over sweet potato was to die for. Our guests are still raving about the food and service. He arrived on time and immediately started preparing the food. We also had two servers and one bartender. They were all professionally dressed. Our guests were very impressed and appreciative that they wore rubber gloves when handling the food. The Servers were very professional and attentive ensuring that everyone was okay. In fact, my husband and I never had to look for them, as they were always there ensuring that we were okay. Very friendly and sweet young ladies. We had a signature drink "Bohemian" (chambord, peach vodka and champagne). The Bartender wasn't familiar with this cocktail but was very eager to learn how to make it. She worked with me to get it to perfection. Our guests loved it. She was also able to make and keep up with whatever drink requests our guests had. She did not become overwhelmed by the number of requests...very friendly and professional. We will definitely hire Kulinary Kings for our next event and request to have the same young Ladies accompany him...although we're sure that his entire staff are just as friendly and professional as the three young Ladies who worked our event. We are so happy that we chose Kulinary Kings. Awesome job! Carl & Diane

Allison recently prepared a multi-course dinner for 11 at my home, her husband Chris was our server. From the appetizers through dessert, each of the dishes was delicious and the presentation was perfect. Aside from being highly skilled at their craft, Allison and Chris are a pleasure to be around. Our guests had a wonderful evening and I would recommend their services without hesitation.

The food was delicious, and the Catering Staff were very friendly, the only issue that we had was a difference in quoted price verse actual price. They were 300.00 over what we were quoted, but I think that was due to some plates being changed.

Our experience with Harvest Specialty Catering and Jason was all that I could ask for. We chose this company for our daughter's barn wedding. Initially, Jason was willing to work with us for a limited portion of our event, something many caterers are NOT willing to do. After time (and a taste testing!) we opted to use him for all but dessert (we had a friend doing the cake.) We so appreciated his flexibility and willingness to work with us. He accommodated us and our changing needs at all points of our journey, even in the midst of his own challenges with equipment issues. We never knew about his difficulties until later, and not from Jason but the venue staff, as he and his crew pulled off a wonderful dinner. Our wedding guests were very complimentary of the food. On every level, we were thrilled with our choice. I would highly recommend this company for your event, whatever it may be.

My daughter’s wedding day was wonderful, in part because of S&B Event Concepts and Catering. Sodiah was fantastic from the first meeting. She accommodated our schedule for the tasting, helped with appropriate menu choices and executed the “day of” with flair and genuine care. I was amazed at how aptly the staff set up in a difficult venue. Of course, all weddings have some snag or another. You would not know it at this wedding because Sodiah and her staff helped keep us calm, anticipated our needs and made us feel so special. The food was delicious, EVERYTHING from appetizers to dessert! We did not serve any meat and no one missed it. Whatever you serve, make sure to include the mac& cheese. If you want personalized service and exceptional food, S&B is your best option.

I hired F.E.A.S.T. to provide catering for a Philly Tech Week event. We went with an appetizer medley, and everything was delicious. I was pleasantly surprised by how good the roasted vegetable tray was. Jay was on time, got everything set up in an orderly fashion while I was running around dealing with other things, and was easy to work with on ordering/scheduling. Thanks Jay!

Chef Tanya provided the appetizers and desserts for a private cocktail party of 40, to celebrate my wife's 60th birthday. First, Tanya visited me at my home to get the "lay of the land" and to learn the type of appetizers that would please my crowd. Later that night Tanya sent me an email a pro-forma menu attached, and the suggestions were amazing and spot-on. No need to change a thing. Tanya and her assistant arrived 3 hours before party time with all the ingredients and equipment she would need. They made all the food from scratch, right in my kitchen: all fresh ingredients, nothing prepared or cooked elsewhere in advance. I wish I could have captured the amazing fragrances in my kitchen and bottle them! Throughout the party, Tanya collaborated with the servers, the bartender, and myself, producing wave after wave of amazing food while my guests were thoroughly entertained. At just the right moment Tanya & Co brought in the most incredible Apricot Pecan Cake, with a '6' and a '0' candle on top, and we all joined in a chorus of Happy Birthday. I could just rave on and on here, as my guests did throughout and after the party...but let me complete my story by saying that, after 3 hours of food prep and a 3 hour party of continuous food, Tanya and the servers cleaned up the entire kitchen, leaving it as they found it - freshly cleaned and spotless. As for the "planning" vs "fulfillment", Tanya's estimate of how much food would be needed was incredibly accurate...everyone ate until their hearts' content, and only small tray of hors d'oevres remained afterward...which I promptly seized for my own late night snack! Bottom Line: Chef Tanya is a complete pro and an outstanding chef. I would recommend her to anyone wanting to do something special for a special occasion. Thank you, Tanya!

Vince and The Little Sicilian did a great job catering my son's birthday party. The food was absolutely delicious. We had pizza, riceballs and dessert and the price was very reasonable compared to other quotes I got. They showed up on time and prepared to serve everyone. We will definitely have them back at some point again!

I highly recommend Couch Tomato catering for your next event. They provide a wide variety of soups, salads, sandwiches, pasta, dessert and more. Chris is always very helpful with taking special dietary requests for my vegan and gluten free customers (I am a sales rep for a Pharmaceutical company). My team especially enjoys the tortellini, tomato basil soup, and brownies. They even take care of setup and use place cards to describe each menu item! Two thumbs up.

Chef Doug has cooked for me on several occasions. He has a wealth of food knowledge and experience. He is timely, tidy, and professional. Pictured below is a salad with pickled strawberries, grilled chicken, dandelion greens, Gorgonzola, strawberry vinegarette. The other is monkfish on rice with a side of sea beans and accented with lemon zest.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good caterer?

Reviews, interviews and menu tastings will help you find the right catering choice for your big day. Start by screening possible wedding caterers based on past reviews. If a caterer you are interested in has a review that concerns you, ask them about it; how they respond will be very telling. Next, ask about their availability for your wedding date.

If the wedding caterer is available on your date, it’s time to talk about menus and prices. Be clear about what your maximum budget is find out what choices this will allow you. Caterers may custom-create a menu for your event, or they may have menu templates within different price ranges that can guide your decision. A clear budget gives the caterer clear parameters within which to work and offer creative suggestions. Schedule a menu tasting to confirm you love your wedding menu. Once you have a menu and date, and have paid a deposit to reserve the caterer’s services, confirm additional details including when the food will be delivered to the site, what kind of service will be provided, how many servers will be onsite and for how long, and who is responsible for setup and cleanup. The more specific your contract, the fewer worries you’ll have on your wedding day. Get more smart hiring tips here.

How much does wedding catering cost per person?

Wedding catering costs will always vary based on the number of guests you’re inviting, the menu you want to serve, and the way the food will be served to your guests. As you interview wedding catering companies, you’ll be presented with a cost per person for various menus. On the low end, wedding catering may cost approximately $15-$18 per person. This would include prepared food only, with no setup or service of any kind. The starting price for a simple buffet meal with minimal service typically averages $22 per person. Opting for the same menu with all organic ingredients could raise your costs to about $33 per person. A moderately upscale menu (finer ingredients, more elaborate presentation) could range from $24 to $34 per person. High-end wedding catering cost truly has no limit. Lobster, filet mignon, specialty seafood, organic ingredients — menu choices like these can boost your cost per person up to $150 and more.

Do you tip a wedding caterer?

Tipping 15 percent to 20 percent on a $3,000 catering bill can feel daunting — especially in light of all the other costs of throwing a wedding — but tipping your wedding caterer is standard practice. Be sure to ask your caterer about their specific policies. Many catering companies include gratuity as a line item on their bill. If tipping is not automatically included in your total, a good approach is to tip all the people involved the day of the event rather than paying one lump sum to the catering company. For each server and bartender, you can tip $20-$50, depending on how long they were onsite and whether they did exceptional work. You can also tip the chef; experts suggest $50. It’s also a good idea to tip the catering manager, the point-of-contact person who keeps the catering service running smoothly the day of your wedding, ensures all the food looks beautiful and is plentiful, and resolves any mishaps. Industry pros recommend tipping the catering manager $100-$200. If gratuity is not included and you’re tipping individuals, set aside $200-$500 in cash to be safe.

What should you look for in a caterer?

A delicious meal is a critical element of a successful wedding, with happy guests fondly remembering your fabulous wedding food. The right caterer for you will be:

    • Available: Even the best caterer is no good if they aren’t available on your wedding date. Ask early before you get your heart set on someone.
    • Affordable for you: Find a caterer that you can afford. Having a spending plan ahead of time will mean you won’t overspend on food.
    • A good personality fit: Wedding planning is stressful, so work with someone that you can get along with and communicate with easily.
    • Experienced and recommended: Ensure the company has a proven track record with events of your size and the references to back it up.
    • Transparent about money: Steer clear of shady pricing. Find a caterer who is very clear about costs and is happy to talk you through budgets and pricing options.
    • Transparent about food: Find someone who is clear about where they source their food from and where it is prepared.

How do you serve food at a wedding?

Food service at your wedding will affect your catering costs and influence the atmosphere of the reception. Buffet style is more informal; plated meals are a bit fancier; family style encourages sharing. Read about the different food service styles to select your preferred wedding catering choice.

    • Buffet: Caterers can drop off prepared foods for a DIY and budget-friendly buffet option where you set everything up and food is entirely self-service. For a fuller-service buffet, the caterers set up food, oversee the buffet throughout the event, and clean up afterwards. For food only, prices per person might average $16-$18, while a service buffet may start around $20-$22 per person. Adding food stations can increase per-person costs by at least $3-$5.
    • Family style: Servers bring large platters of food to guest tables in courses. It’s less formal (and less expensive) than a plated meal, but more formal and higher-cost than a buffet. You’ll need large tables to accommodate the platters, so plan accordingly when renting furniture for the event.
    • Plated: A plated event is a formal dining experience; waitstaff serve your seated guests for each course, fill their drinks, and attend to them throughout the dinner. A plated dinner is typically the most expensive option for both food and service.
    • Food trucks: Similar to buffets, with food trucks your guests get their own food and bring it to their table. A food truck gives a relaxed and playful vibe to your reception.
    • Cocktail reception: If you don’t want a formal seated dinner, you can opt for a wide assortment of passed appetizers at an extended cocktail hour reception.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
