Ellal, the owner, responded to my call very quickly and was able to come within 2 hrs. My pipes were frozen-no water. He was polite, very professional, and explained everything that needed to be done. Additionally he was very neat and did not leave a mess even though it required some tearing apart of structures. I would definitely hire him again for any plumbing or construction work that I need in the future. He is also reasonably priced.

I hired Glenn to remodel my son's closet, then it grew into remodeling his entire room. Glenn was the consummate professional, with a creative eye and ideas. I trusted him implicitly and the results were more than I could ever imagine. If I ever have any other projects, I will make sure to reach out to him again! He definitely has a lifetime repeat customer! Thanks so much for all your help, Glenn!

We needed two large holes repaired in our sheetrock kitchen ceiling. Jerry the owner did all the work on my project himself. He chose to patch the holes rather than replace the whole ceiling, which was an economical option. His work reflected the quality of an experienced craftsman. He was punctual, arriving prepared to work, and starting work as soon as we accepted his offer. He worked around our schedule, put in extra time that was required to get the job done right, and stuck to the original quote. We are very happy with the finished product and would recommend him to others.

I wish I could give more than five stars! We’ve had several highly-recommended and well-respected handymen and general contractors over the years and, without a doubt, Hill Home Improvement tops them all! I had an area of moisture-damaged drywall with mold that needed replacing, preferably as soon as possible because of the mold. Rob, the owner, responded to my Thumbtack inquiry in less than an hour. We spoke over the phone right away and he offered to come right over to provide an assessment and within 25 minutes of our call he was here! And it was 9:30 at night! - just goes to show Rob’s dedication and commitment to helping his clients. During his assessment, Rob was very professional, courteous, thorough, and knowledgeable of the problem at hand. What I appreciated the most was his unwavering integrity - he walked me through the plan and all costs; he wanted to complete the project properly while being very conscious of the cost for me. His prices were very very fair. He came the following day with one other worker. They were punctual, got right to work and were in and out so quickly - within an hour! The quality of work was exceptional. I couldn’t be happier! Thank you so much, Rob! Looking forward to many more projects together!

Joe was amazing! First of all, he responded to my request right away to replace my kitchen faucet. I was very impressed by his knowledge and professionalism. Then, I was surprised by how quickly he was able to do the work. He would have come later on the same day, but I was not available so we scheduled it for the following day in the morning. He arrived promptly at the time we set up and he came prepared to complete the job with the new kitchen faucet that I selected in hand. He was very courteous and friendly and I was able to tell that he takes great pride in his workmanship. If you want quality work done at a very reasonable price, I highly recommend him and I will utilize his services from now on. It is very rare these days to find a contractor that is responsive and cares about the quality of his work.

Lenny is amazing! He's a total professional. I'm a designer and hired him from Thumbtack. He helped me on installation day with hanging art, putting together furniture... he even fixed a mistake that the electrician made! Both my client and I were so happy with Lenny, his work, and his attention to detail. I hired him again for another client's installation! I highly recommend Lenny from Dream Garage Remodeling!

George has done a variety of jobs for us. He has realigned pavers in our walkway, replaced drywall in our garage, and repaired the side and roof of our utility shed. The time spent on these jobs was variable, but was close to the amount estimated before he began work. The quality of the work was excellent. George comes promptly to review a project and give an estimate, and provides a written estimate via email within 24 hours. He is very professional and easy to work with. We have several other jobs waiting for him.

Firstly, I can't recommend Gary highly enough for any level of remodeling or renovation jobs you may be doing. We recently used Real Deal$ to remodel the kitchen, bathroom and a large portion of the living area in our home and have been delighted with the both the process and the results. Having worked in real estate/property development, I have worked with a number of other contractors and know when I'm working with someone who knows their business and takes genuine pride in the quality of the work they're doing- and that certainly describes Gary and the sub contractors he works with. Although I was pretty sure I wanted to use Real Deal$ based on a friend's recommendation, I wanted to get bids from other renovation contractors for our remodel just to be thorough. When compared with the other bids, I was very impressed with Gary's pricing and the level of detail outlined in his bid. Another big factor for me in choosing the right contractor was the lead time involved for the renovation. Most of the other contractors couldn't work within our time constraints- which was to have all of the remodeling completed in six weeks. We knew it would be tight but Gary absolutely pulled through for us. Both our kitchen and bathroom look amazing, and both are so much more functional than they were before. We were absolutely delighted (and surprised based on experience with other contractors) that the remodel stayed on schedule and within our budget. The remodel took the demolition of the kitchen, bathroom and part of the living space down to the studs and put it all back together again with new plumbing, electrical and heating. Gary helped source all of the new appliances and finishes through his vendors for the entire remodel which can be a handful if you haven't done it before. He provided us with numerous sources for our kitchen cabinetry also. All the work performed throughout the remodel is of the highest standard and we enjoyed working with Gary and all of his sub contractors. I also really appreciated how hard they all worked towards keeping the remodel on schedule and 'WITHIN OUR BUDGET'. Remodeling, or any kind of renovation, (whether big or small) can be very stressful- but having Gary as our contractor really helped alleviate the majority of our concerns and I will definitely be calling him for any future renovation needs we may have. Michal replaced the door from my garage to the inside of our kitchen due to the old door warping and sagging. He was extremely accommodating offering to start early in the morning and provide the new door (purchased ahead of time requiring no deposit). He went above and beyond during his installation, including trim, shims, a new door knob (which he had to come back to do the next day) spray foam and about 6 hours of labor. My new door is level, does not let in any heat from my garage (not ventilated) and opens and closes with ease! I am 100 percent satisfied and he is worth every dollar... you will not be disappointed by his craftsmanship.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

Do I need a contractor for a kitchen remodel?

A kitchen remodel is one of the most important investments you can make in your home, and it’s critical to get the details right; that’s where a home renovation contractor comes in. A minor remodel usually includes new cabinet faces and hardware, replacement appliances, and paint, while an extensive job may enlarge the kitchen’s square footage, install new cabinets or an island, change the layout, and lay new tile or hardwood floors. Any renovation that includes filing permits, construction, or electrical or plumbing work is best completed by an experienced contractor who knows local codes.

How much will it cost to remodel my house?

The cost to remodel a home is highly variable — size and scope of the project, quality of materials, and the number of subcontractors required to complete the job all affect the total cost. The average national cost of a home renovation project is $13,500. The national average per-square-foot cost of a remodel ranges from $25 to $100. Nationally, kitchen and bathroom remodels are the most popular types of projects, in part because they typically have the highest return on investment when the home is sold. The national average cost of a major kitchen remodel ranges from $25,000 to $62,000, while the average bathroom remodel tends to cost $6,000 to $18,000. In addition to materials and labor costs, many remodeling project costs include permit fees, which, average $900 or more, depending on your location.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
