While my movers were a few hours late due to a previous job that took longer than expected, Art kept me in the loop and made several phone calls to provide updates. I have a few awkwardly-shaped/heavy pieces of furniture that were handled with the utmost care. Plus, my movers were friendly, courteous, and helpful. My one comment is that the truck comes with two guys - which does prolong the time it takes. In the past, I've used moving companies with three workers - two to carry items in/out and one to load the truck - which expedites the process. In addition, I moved A LOT of boxes and bags myself prior to the move day, so most of the items moved were larger items that I couldn't carry myself. That being said, the price was reasonable and the guys were friendly. All in all, a solid experience. I would use them again.

My Son was moving from an apartment into his first home and instead of renting a truck and having friends do the move we decided to hire a moving company. We searched the Web for moving companies and came across Moyers Moving Services. At first I was a little apprehensive about hiring a small moving company since I have always used Nation Wide companies in the past. After reading the reviews I decided to take a chance on Moyers. Well, it was a chance well taken because this company puts the Big Boys to shame. They are professionals from the word go. They showed up at the exact scheduled time. Elliot and Dan were the movers and I can't say enough about them. They were very profession, courteous and careful. There was not one scratch or any damage to any of the furniture or walls and there were no broken fragile items. The move was also completed in the allotted time. I also want to thank Emily for taking the time to answer any and all the questions I had in regards to the move. After speaking with her, my mind was put at ease and I knew I was making the right choice. My Mother is moving this Saturday and yes, Moyers is doing the move. Thank you Moyers, it's a pleasure doing business with you.

We had a small job: moving some large furniture from bedrooms to basement to clear out those rooms for some home renovations. They were great! Very friendly and careful with our belongings. The only thing holding them back from 5 stars was that they were held up at another job so were 90 mins late. They did, however, proactively call to let us know and to make sure that was still ok. And it was. The price was also great for the small job. Other places we called had. $120+ minimum + travel time. We paid $70 which was well worth it. We will use them again to move the furniture back once the renovation is done!

David and his moving partner exceeded my expectations. Overall they made my moving experience much less stressful. They arrived on time, were professional & courteous, moved my belongings quickly and with care, used a great looking trailer along with moving blankets, dollies, carts, etc. David Engle provided service that you would expect only to find from the most expensive moving companies, but at a much better value.

My experience with John Carson Relocation was related to a long distance (1000 miles) move of household goods, tools, and yard equipment. Mr. Carson is a friendly and straight forward person. He was always on time, and kept in contact with me throughout the planning, loading, and moving so there were no surprises or worries about the timing of activities. He has integrity with regard to taking care of his customers' goods and their property. In the case where some damage did occur, he was quick to acknowledge it and 100% willing to make things right. He also went the "extra mile" to mail a piece of hardware that, unknown to everyone (including me) at the time of unloading, came off a furniture item and ended up going back to Pennsylvania on the truck. My only criticism of the move would be that I believe more care could have been applied to the moving of large furniture pieces (especially a piano). This includes the physical moving from the house to the truck and the blanketing of the items prior to removal from the house. John was short-handed during the pick-up and unloading due to some people having the flu. Not having enough help made the job more difficult and made protection of the furniture less than it should have been. That said, with roughly 45 moving boxes of items shipped along with the furniture pieces, all the boxed items arrived in good shape with no blemishes or damage of any kind.

Josh was super helpful! We had a very difficult couch moving situation and the legs had to be taken off and then put back on. He was very patient with the situation and even came back again to fix the legs of the couch. He is super handy and even helped me build my new desk and hang some things up for my roommates and me. Also very fair pricing compared to other moving companies!

Rob and Carl were really nice guys. They were super flexible as I needed to call them back 3 times to complete a rather intricate job of hanging IKEA cubbies in my daughter's room. They built them, painted them, and then came back to attach them to the wall. When I called them for the work originally, I didn't realize it would be that complicated. They also helped with small things like hanging some paintings and building a storage unit for the basement. They are friendly, professional and knowledgable. I will definitely use them again. Their pricing is fair, I actually gave them extra for the amount of time they put in for my project. (took longer than expected)

We are in the process of downsizing and moving out of our house. Wanted to get a price to move and relocate a pool table as we wanted to include the price of moving it in selling it. Within minutes of asking for quotes we received a response from Ryan through Thumbtack. Followed up with him the next day. He mentioned he would be in the area, sent him some pics of the table and Ryan came the next day to pick it up. He bought the table. Their service was professional, honest, clean and friendly. Highly recommend Ryan and his services.

I had two other moving companies decline moving a large Norditrack treadmill from my garage to a 2nd story room. The guys at Centurion moved it without hesitation and without any damage to the walls. They even covered my wood floors to prevent any damage. I highly recommend this company.

I contacted 4 moving companies within a three day period to which no one responded. When I contacted Carlos 3 days later, since no one else responded to me, at 8:00 AM, my phone rang at 8:03 AM and he offered me the best deal and everything was prompt and smooth sailing from that moment on. They showed up exactly when they said they would be there, actually 15 minutes earlier, and made my move very quick and smooth. I would definitely give them a 10 star rating and recommend them for their prompt response, accommodations, professionalism and friendliness, not to mention the best price quote out of all the companies that I called. Carlos is very laid-back, very friendly, very accommodating and very easy to deal with.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do moving companies do?

Moving companies provide a range of services to help you physically move out of one residence and move into a new place. But moving companies can do so much more than just haul your belongings across town in a truck. The national average for moving company prices ($250-$350 per hour) reflects the range of services provided. Here are examples of all the ways moving companies can help:

  • Packing: Moving companies can pack your belongings for you. They typically charge a flat rate for both the box and the labor to pack the box. The more time-consuming the belongings are to pack, the higher the cost per box. For example, books could be $5 per box, linens $10 per box, and fine china and glassware $18 per box.
  • Specialty moving: Safely move a baby grand piano, a oversize aquarium, or other specialty items with the help of pro movers.
  • Storage: Many moving companies can store your belongings while you wait for a new home to be remodeled or closing of your new home to be finalized. If you’re moving long-distance, they often provide short-term storage free for a specific length of time, and a set rate after that (such as $60 per square cubic foot of storage space used).
  • Long-distance moves: No need to rent a trailer and move your things; a long-distance moving company can haul your belongings across the country for you. Typically they charge by the cubic foot for moves, with prices based on your destination.
  • Unpacking: Moving companies can even unpack your belongings for you after they have moved them. This is not as common, and will definitely increase the price, but can be helpful if you’re not able to tackle this task yourself.

How much does a moving company charge per hour?

When you’re ready to make a major move, it’s time to research moving companies’ prices. A moving company may charge on average anywhere between $25 and $100 per hour, per worker, for moving services. The price will vary with regional labor rates, local cost to do business, and the level of service the movers are providing. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a moving company is $250-$350 per hour. This price includes a range of pricing, from all-in service with four or more movers on site to standard hourly rates for one or two movers. Other factors that affect moving companies’ prices are packing, stairs (or elevators), and distance. For a full-service move, you pay movers to pack your belongings for you. You may pay for the cost of the moving boxes and an hourly rate per worker, and there may be additional charges for packing fragile items. Stairs will also add to your moving prices. Lifting and carrying boxes and furniture up and down stairs takes more time and creates more physical labor for the workers. Moving companies may charge flat rates for flights of stairs, such as $50-$70 per flight. A moving company may also charge a one-time fee for moving things via elevator, such as $75-$100. If parking is not accessible in front of your home or apartment building, there may also be an additional fee for the added distance to carry your belongings to the truck.

How much should you tip furniture movers?

Moving furniture is hard work and potentially dangerous unless you’re properly equipped. For anyone not ready to handle their heavy oak armoire alone, professional furniture movers can safely and efficiently move your items to another room in your house or across town as needed. The national average cost to hire heavy furniture movers is $150-$200 per hour. This rate could include multiple furniture movers working as a team to move items such as beds, armoires, billiards tables, pianos, shelves, tables, entertainment centers and more. Hourly rates can vary by region. If your furniture movers have arrived on time, done a great job, kept your home and belongings protected from scratches and dings, and completed the move as planned, a tip will be greatly appreciated. Moving companies suggest approximately 10 percent of the total bill as gratuity for those doing local moving jobs, which is also a good guideline for tipping heavy furniture movers. If the total bill for heavy moving was $100 and two workers were onsite, consider giving them $10 total, or $5 each for a job well done.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

How much does it cost to move a one-bedroom apartment across the country?

Professional movers can handle the hard work of moving your one-bedroom apartment across the country for you. You can determine what your move will cost by learning the rate your movers charge per cubic foot and how they factor distance into the total cost. Cross-country movers typically charge based on your belongings rather than apartment size because that determines how much work they will have to do. For example, a studio apartment that is crammed full of things will take more work and moving truck space than the contents of a three-bedroom apartment with very little furniture.

Cross-country movers may also have varying rates, depending on where in the country you are moving. For example, a company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. A one-bedroom apartment costs approximately $1,500 to move across the country.
