Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a tiler during the COVID-19 pandemic?

To set up an appointment or consultation with a tiler during the COVID-19 pandemic, start by conducting an online search for tilers in your area. Ask if the tiler can conduct a consultation through a video call instead of a traditional site visit to limit exposure. It’s also wise to confer about the current state of the pandemic and ensure that it’s safe to complete the project now. If not, discuss postponing for another time.

How can I find out if a tiler is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

To identify essential service providers during the pandemic, visit your city or state’s government website to find a list of recommendations.

A list of national recommendations can be found at CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 webpage. This service lists 16 different types of essential infrastructure sectors that are approved to continue operation during the pandemic. But note not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Does a tiler need to enter my home?

If the tiling job is located in your house, the tiler will need access to your home. The exception to this would be if the job was taking place in an outdoor area like a backyard.

If a tiler does need to enter your home, take strong precautions. Sanitize all surfaces, avoid being in the same room and conduct payment using digital platforms. Discuss a safety strategy with tilers in your area beforehand.

Can I use digital payments to pay for tile installation, replacement or repairs?

Digital payment platforms are popular in a wide range of service industries, and many tile installment, replacement and repair professionals now accept them. Common platforms include PayPal, Zelle, Google Pay, Venmo, Square Cash and more.

Start with an online search for tile companies near you. Ask them if they accept digital payments and which types you can use. Then, put a strategy together to follow social distancing guidelines.

Do tilers offer remote or virtual services?

Because tiling is a manual, in-person job, it is not typically considered a remote project. But if you come across a profile that states the tile company is offering remote services, ask them what those services include.

What do you need to lay tile?

If you’re laying a new tile floor, you’ll likely need an assortment of tools and supplies, including (but not limited to):

  • Tile
  • Tile adhesive
  • Tile trim
  • Tile spacers
  • Underlayment
  • Sealer
  • Caulk
  • Level
  • Goggles
  • Gloves
  • Trowel
  • Carpenter’s square
  • Grout
  • Sponge
  • Tape measure
  • Etc.

If you don’t have all of the tools, equipment and skills necessary to lay tile in your home, consider hiring one of the best tile contractors in your area.

Can you tile over drywall?

Yes, it is possible to lay tile over drywall. If you’re looking to lay a tile backsplash in your kitchen, you can certainly do it yourself — but hiring a professional may save time.

Before you tile over your drywall, make sure the wall has a smooth surface with no bumps or cracks. Start by using a compound to seal up any crevices, then sand the drywall and clean up the dust. Then, lay a coat of primer on the drywall to get it ready for your tile.

How long does it take to lay tile?

Depending on the pro’s expertise, the size of the project and its complexity, the time it takes to lay the tile will vary. For some projects, it may take a few hours to lay tile while others will require several days of work.

When planning a tiling project for your home, get free estimates from the best tile contractors near you and ask them how long it would take them to complete your job.

Can you tile over tile floors?

Yes, you can lay tile over existing tile floors (or a backsplash). Although it’s generally best to pull up your old flooring, you can simply place tiles on top if your existing floor is in good condition.

Before you start, examine your tiles carefully for mold, cracks or unevenness. Provided none of these is an issue, you can begin laying your new tiles.

But if this is your first time laying tile — or if you want to ensure that the job is done right — save time by hiring a tiling professional near you

I hired Chris to remove an old tile backsplash in my kitchen and put up a new backsplash. The old tile was on drywall which he was able to remove/replace very quickly. The new tile was up the same day and the job only took two days. I’m very happy with his work and would definitely hire him again in the future. His prices are reasonable and the quality of work was A+

Chris did an amazing job finishing off my fireplace with a complicated tile selection on my part. He was very easy to work with and even went the extra step to run out and pick up more tile for the job. The finished work is beautiful and he completed it in just one day.

Ken was a hard worker. He set a price in the beginning and stuck to it regardless of all the new issues he found from the previous person who did the floor before we purchased the house. Originally hired him to just refill in the gaps in-between the tile, but his pure professionalism shone through when he discovered a bigger underlying problem. The person who did the tile before did a lazy job and it was affecting the whole floor in a way that would cause a continuous issue. He recommended a full tear up and relaying of the tile done the right way and we are very thankful for him working tirelessly on the bathroom into the night to get it back in business. As with any work, time will be the main factor of the quality of the work done, but as of now, I am a happy customer.

Luan's work is fine. I used his services on two tile jobs. I am satisfied with the work done in the vestibule, but the job he did on my kitchen was just ok. He removed a shelf system and did not replace it correctly.

Working with Legacy Tile from start to finish was fantastic. They were quick to respond once I told them about my little kitchen backsplash project. They explained to me what to expect and what could happen which affected the price of the quote (which the quote was a great price to begin with). They showed up on time and appropriately draped the rest of my house to protect my floors before getting started and cleaned up before they left. I really liked how they respected my property throughout the time they were here. I’m glad that I do not have to go searching for a pro for my next tile project because these guys will be hired again in a heart beat!!

Cannot be happier with our experience with Donahue Family Tile. Jack, Sharon and Zach are true professionals and just pleasant to have around. Jack was always here when he said he was going to be. Jack has a work ethic and skill that put him at the top of his craft. Our bathroom addition came out absolutely beautiful thanks to Jack and Sharon. When a few plumbing and framing issues came up Jack was able to make the appropriate fixes so we didn’t have to have other contractors back. The craftsmanship and attention to detail are on full display with the end product. Do yourself a favor and call Jack in for your tiling jobs don’t waste your time with the other guys.

When I requested a quotation they were fast to respond, were able to get me on the schedule and held to the scheduled date. These guys did a fantastic job on my shower stall tile replacement project. The shower looks brand new and their work was meticulous. In addition the price came in under the original estimate.

Excellence ! I will be hiring them from here on out for all my tiling , flooring in all my properties and projects. They were very professional, clean, punctual and the best part was the quality of the work. Last, I was very impressed with their ability to make adjustment regardless of the imperfections from a previous contractor. It can be difficult to go behind someone else. Thank You! Keith

Jhalil was quick to provide an estimate and he started on time, getting the work done over a few days. He even removed and replaced drywall where the previous tiling had been attached with an extra-strong bond, not something I'd anticipated that might be an issue. I'm happy with the work and would recommend him for those looking for a combo of value, punctuality, and work quality.

We had a fantastic experience with Scott. He had great advice, and clear skill. We had a tight timeline that he made work for him, and he made sure to make us feel like a priority throughout. We were out of town, and he checked in with us every day to make sure we knew the job was progressing. Would recommend to anyone in search of a tile expert!

Bill and his crew did a great job replacing my shower tile floor. The job previously done was leaking and cracked. Bill was responsive with an estimate and worked quickly to schedule the job. He said it would take between 3-5 days and it took 3. His crew was respectful, punctual, and did great work. Even after every day of work, they did a full clean up and left my house in great condition. Highly recommended!

The guys did a great job-fast, friendly, and at a seriously great price. They took on the task of removing the heavy concrete bed that was behind the old tile in our bathroom, and their workmanship was fast & excellent. Our plumber (who came to put the sink back in) even remarked about how great the job they did was, and wants their contact info. They even offered to replace our medicine cabinet at no charge, but we wanted to keep the old one. All work done in 2 days- we highly recommend them!

The man tiled my very crappy, crumbling bath. He also checked the floor underneath the tub, retiled the bath, fixed some plaster problems in the bathroom, and the bathroom now looks 100% better at a very reasonable price and 1/3 of what Bathfitters was going to cost. He also installed water valves that were missing and just charged me for the valves. Second generation bathroom remodeler. Great work, great problem solving, responsive, prompt, professional, respectful of and communicative with women. Can't recommend them highly enough.

I unfortunately had a very poor experience working with Gary and his company for a kitchen backsplash job. I was under the impression during all of our communication that Gary was the one who would be performing the job - he made no indication otherwise. However on the day of the job, one of his employees showed up instead without a full understanding of what the job was (there seemed to be a lack of communication between Gary & his employee). There was a language barrier between the employee and myself - which is completely okay - however, it led to further confusion on top of whatever miscommunication had already taken place between him and Gary. The employee was not prepared with the proper tools for the job and had to go to the store to purchase those materials during the time he should have been working. Upon returning and finally beginning the job, I received a text about an hour later saying that he had left for the day and to text Gary for next steps. The employee gave me no notice (I was upstairs - all he had to do was give me a shout) and he left my kitchen an unfinished mess with broken tile and materials everywhere. And worst of all, he left my back door unlocked and back gate wide open. I live in the city making this a security concern for my family. We were already quite stressed as my wife was 34 weeks pregnant at the time with high blood pressure and delivering early. And coming downstairs to see our home an absolute mess added an immense amount of additional stress on our plate. We had moved everything out of the kitchen into our family and dining area specifically for this job (we live in a row home so we're already working with limited space), and to see everything unfinished and being unable to put all those items back was very stressful.  Gary's worker did eventually come back - but completed the job in a very poor and rushed manner. The tile was uneven and there were several broken grout spots. I pointed out the errors to him upon completion and he said that this job SHOULD have been a 2 day job, but he was instructed by Gary to complete it in 1 day. He said that had it actually been a 2 day job, he wouldnt have been so rushed and the job wouldn't have been so sloppy with so many mistakes. I contacted Gary and got no response. After the employee left, I noticed that he had dumped broken grout and caulk pieces into my kitchen sink garbage disposal, causing it to jam up and my kitchen sink to overflow. I spent over 3 hours that night trying to fix this issue which was not only a huge and unnecessary waste of time, but again yet another added stress for me and my very pregnant wife.  After finally getting in touch with Gary, he seemed surprised at the situation. I asked him to repair the uneven pieces of tile, but he himself suggested that instead, he would not charge me for the job and can offer me the cost of the difference of the material so I could re-purchase the tile and get the job redone by someone else. I told him I would talk to my wife and get back to him after we have our baby since we had a lot going on. I reached back out a couple times via text and phone over the next few weeks and never heard back with any sort of acknowledgement. I would strongly not recommend Gary or his company at all.

BEWARE, do not hire this company. There is a reason why the five reviews are from this year only and they have no other online presence - proprietor is either a scam or dishonest at the least. At first, John (the owner) was prompt, responsive, and showed up on time for the quote. He seemed competent and efficient and got me a quote by the end of the day. Although the quote wasn't detailed and he did not take detailed measurements at our meeting, I thought he seemed solid and people on Thumbtack appeared to be happy with him. His price was about $800 higher than our other quote but he presented well, so we decided to hire him. This was supposed to be a 2-day project for trim and tile work. John wanted 50% upfront but agreed to forego the deposit since we were providing materials - thank goodness. We agreed on a start date (a Monday). When Sunday rolled around and I hadn't heard from him, I started to get nervous. I texted him and he responded and told me his "crew" would be there between 8:30-9 AM on Monday morning. Later he admitted it was just one guy, and that he himself wouldn't be showing up until "later". At 9:02 he texted, saying his guy was stuck in traffic and would be there by 9:30. By 9:45, I had not heard from nor seen either of them, so I called him to cancel the work. He didn't answer his phone so I texted him, then he called back and now said his guy was having "car troubles". He said he understood that I wanted to cancel and he was sorry. John did not take any responsibility for wasting our time nor did he provide me with an honest explanation about what happened. I've gotten this run-around from crappy "contractors" several times before, so I know the game. He's likely just a middle man and works with highly undependable, inconsistent workers. If this is the case, he's definitely dishonest because he told me he has actual employees, not sub-contractors. Either way, if that is true, what kind of boss hires employees who can't show up to a job on time? If you want to waste a lot of time and effort, by all means consider this guy. Otherwise avoid him like the plague - he's simply not dependable, nor honest. Who knows about the quality of work, if you can even get them to show up.
