I used On-Demand Moving Services for my most recent move in Philadelphia this past week, and I would encourage you to use any other company than On-Demand for your moving services. I used Thumbtack to obtain quotes from several different moving companies and On-Demand gave me the most competitive quote, so I decided to use them this time, but after this experience, I will never again use this company or any company suggested by Thumbtack.
We are two single women, so we had a moderate amount of things - 2 bedrooms, a couch, a few bookcases and a dining room table as well as several boxes. They had 3 movers come out and they moved incredibly slow. It took them 5.67 hours to complete the move (I moved 0.5 miles down the road).
The quote that the manager gave me was inherently deceptive. The estimate included 3.75 hours of labor (at $105/hr) and several other fees (# of flights of steps at each location, mileage, mattress cover, etc.) and it came out to around $500. Lanre, the manager, had e-mailed me that he thought it would take 3.75-5.75 hours for the move, so I was prepared to pay more than the estimate when it took them 5.67 hours to move me.
At the end of the job, the mover quotes me $950 for the total. I knew instinctively that this must be wrong because I added about 2 more hours of labor at $105/hr to my $500 quote and thought he would charge me around $700. I called the manager to discuss, and he said that the quote he gave me included a “one-time charge of 1 hr travel for the move itself”. I still did not really understand what he was talking about, but basically, he sent me an estimate that said it was for 3.75 hours of labor, but it was actually what it would cost for 2.75 hours of labor with an additional flat fee hour travel charge of $105 for the move itself. I asked him why he would send me a deceptively low quote for an hour less than what he thought it would take to move all my things and he just replied, “It is only an estimate because we do not know how long it will actually take.”
We went back and forth for a while, and then he suddenly found an “error” in his calculations, and then quoted me $810 for the move. At this point, I was so disgusted with this company and wanted their movers out of my home. I paid the $810, but I would say, please do not use this company. They damaged my wall (I moved into new construction) during the move, moved at an incredibly slow pace and then used deceptively low estimates with hidden fees that resulted in me paying way more than previously agreed.
