  • Justin Gonzalez

    (8 reviews)

A native of Philadelphia, Justin Gonzalez began performing professionally at the age of 11. Having sung as a classical musician with The Philadelphia Singers, The Philadelphia Orchestra, Peter Nero and the Philly Pops, Opera Philadelphia, amongst many others, his love of pop music was never far below the surface. It was kept alive through his performances with Rod Stewart and Chubby Checker, as well as regularly appearing on the Philadelphia club circuit. While leading a life as a concert performer, often his talents were called upon to welcome dignitaries--he sang for Presidents Bill Clinton and Barack Obama, Vice President Joe Biden, Prime Minister Tony Blair, Prince Charles--the list goes on. During a time that was devoted to forging into the world of opera, Justin was the 2012 winner of the San Nicola Opera Competition and was named a finalist in both The Shyuler Foundation's Career Bridge's Foundation(2011) and The Philadelphia Orchestra's Greenfield Competition(2012). While leading seemingly separate musical lives as the internationally touring choral musician, classical soloist, award winning operatic singer, Uker, pop singer, musical theater lead, as well as stints in stand up comedy and magic, Justin was brewing all of these things into what is now Locust St. Riot. Justin brings his studies and performance experience to the classroom to help all of his students become the best musicians they can be. His philosophy can be summed up simply: "Anyone can learn to do anything better if they try." All lessons are one-on-one and tailored to what each students wants to gain knowledge and experience in. Justin strives to have every student leave his studio empowered and excited to practice. Justin Gonzalez's studio is a place for musical, emotional, and overall personal growth. Instruments and private classes instructed are: - Music Theory/Piano (6 yo plus, Beginner) - Ukulele (6 yo plus) - Voice (13 yo plus) - Performance/Audition Coaching (all Instruments and Actors)

  • Emily Anna Bridges, Vocal Coach

    (3 reviews)

My name is Emily Anna Bridges of La Voce Mia Voice Studio at Center City, Philadelphia. I am a composer, singer and vocal coach with almost a decade of vocal teaching experience. I started teaching undergraduate voice lessons in 2002 at Penn while working on my PhD in music and steadily gaining students until I graduated a few years ago. There was such a demand for my services, that I opened a private studio which has blossomed into a full-time career. My students are from all over the Philly metro area. They are of various ages and professions and come from diverse musical backgrounds. I am a classically-trained soprano who specializes in early classical music styles, such as medieval and renaissance, but I also have worked professionally with rock, jazz, blues, musical theater, cabaret and gospel styles. My students are singers in bands or small ensembles, executives honing their speaking voices, intermediate singers going to the next level and new singers exploring their voices for the first time. What they all have in common is a strong desire to make their voices stronger, healthier and more beautiful. My teaching style is holistic, health oriented and aware of the deep connection between the voice and personal identity. I offer my students complete discretion and confidentiality as well as a nurturing teaching environment. As they progress, students see results in many areas of their lives, as the voice is an intrinsic part of human self-expression. Lessons are tailored to the individual student's vocal needs and are geared to support student goals and interests, so they range widely in scope. As the process is unique for each student, we may explore any repertory genre or style at the student's request including voice work, such as public speaking. At the core of the lessons are intensive exercises and etudes, I've developed and assembled wide-reaching teaching styles. My pedagogy draws from Bel Canto, Alexander technique, Feldenkrais method and vocology, among many other sources. I've combined all of the most efficient materials specifically to strengthen the breathing apparatus, get the voice closing properly to create sound in a healthy and sustainable way, achieve clear and consistently resonant vowels and expand range and power, while most importantly allowing the voice freedom to find its own authentic and natural sound. In addition to technical work, we also explore areas such as musical interpretation, theatricality, connecting with audiences, defeating stage fright and improving body alignment in singing and every day life. Students often have the opportunity to perform in front of small audiences at studio recitals. I enjoy working with students at all levels of development. If you are passionate about improving your voice and have time and energy to commit to this intensive self-realizing process, please email me with a short history of your voice, what motivates you to look for a teacher right now and your vocal goals. I will respond to schedule a free consultation meeting.

  • Philadelphia Guitar School, LLC

    (6 reviews)

With 20 years of musicianship and over 15 years of work in education with ages 5 and up, Dan offers guitar, bass, mandolin, cello, and ukelele lessons to help you find your music voice using techniques that best suit you and where you want to grow as a musician. *Lessons can be in your home, Dan's studio in South Philly, or via Skype.* Together, you and Dan will develop a curriculum specific to your goals, drawing on the basics, from scales, chords, alternate tuning and your favorite songs to experimenting with looping and effects pedals. We offer different packages to best accommodate your starting level: Beginner - Never picked up a guitar in your life or had one for years and still don't know how to play a D chord? This package will focus on the fundamentals of getting started: open chords, simple scales and some songs of your choosing. Intermediate - You know your open chords, a few bar chords and you're ready to go a little further but not sure what that even means? The intermediate package will review and hone your existing knowledge and skills while introducing fun exercises and more challenge songs. Advance - You can play and probably even have a few guitars. You listen to a lot of music and can hold down your own in a jam, maybe write your own music. You're ready to dive down the rabbit hole, headstock first! Advance classes are chock full of headier material, philosophical musings on composition and anything else we can think of. Special Interest - You know what's up and are ready to create sounds on sounds on sounds on sounds. Maybe you have a looper but aren't sure what to do beyond laying down chords to solo over. Dan is a veteran looper, notorious effects pedal nerd, and loves working with guitarists looking to expand their sonic pallet. Dan specializes in rock, jazz, folk, experimental and ambient music with a unique expertise in looping and effects pedals. All levels, ages, and styles are welcome.

I am an experienced musician with several thousand hours of deliberate, mindful practice in addition to extensive live performance experience. I have recording and live performance experience as a guitarist, vocalist, and bassist, along with five years of teaching under my belt. I am a self taught guitarist and have taken five years of voice lessons. I am a dedicated, reliable teacher who has a passion for teaching students about their selected instrument and music of all genres. In addition to guitar/singing/bass, I also play piano, drums, harmonica, and mandolin as well as various other instruments. Music is absolutely the one thing I am most passionate about in life. I began teaching five years ago around the age of 20. Now, at 25, I have had the opportunity to teach people from all walks of life, with ages ranging from 6 to 60! I encourage students to practice "perfect practice", which means they are as relaxed as possible when practicing (mentally and physically). Daily practice is also something I cannot emphasize enough, even if only for five or ten minutes a day. That serves the student better than one day a week for an hour because short bursts of concentrated practice develop the correct muscle memory to play the instrument. Being interested in devouring all genres of music, I have found myself teaching all styles from blues to pop to metal to video game music! At the start of the first lesson, I give each new student a questionnaire to fill out that tells me their musical background, influences, goals for the instrument and what music they are interested in learning. If the new student is a younger child, I begin them with Hal Leonard's Guitar Method Book One. Once they have grasped the simple chords and melodies of the book, I begin to introduce simple songs that they are interested in learning. I encourage students to practice "perfect practice", which means they are as relaxed as possible when practicing (mentally and physically). This type of practicing is also known as deliberate practice, which I have found to be the most efficient type of practice (which can be applied to any instrument or skill) for students to progress quickly on the instrument. I am a laid back instructor that knows when the setting is right to encourage the student by leading them in the right direction to achieve their specific and unique goals. Each student is different and what works for one will not always work for another. By reminding the beginning student that we are all human and even the best musicians have started as complete amateurs, they can feel more comfortable making mistakes freely, that are bound to happen without feeling self-conscious. My favorite part of teaching is seeing the smile on the students face when the make a new discovery, have an epiphany, or play something difficult correctly for the first time!

Susan Anders Brizick Voice Studio

(2 reviews)

I teach different ability levels in a variety of ways to meet the needs of each individual student. We establish where each student is, establish goals for their singing and work from there.

Susan of Susan Anders Brizick Voice Studio teaches and performs a variety of music from classical to Broadway, from pop to country. Her experiences and passion for others to find their singing voice and enhance its quality have led her to offer lessons in her studio. Singing requires the healthy way of using an irreplaceable part of your body, your voice box. Whether you are a beginner wanting to learn to sing or an advanced student who seeks to improve skills, Susan can help reach your goals.

My favorite and most successful project was my Summer Musical Theater Series of 2012! The 7-week program included masterclass/workshops on Pilates, yoga, and acting and their effects on singing. What an amazing time! All of the students had fun exploring how freeing up space in your body can affect the singing voice.

With Susan's instructions, you can find your true singing voice and help build your own collection of music that matches your unique style.
