Tom is a conscientious professional. He arrived on time, using text messaging to communicate arrival time. I had him steam clean 5 rooms and two sets of stairs, which he accomplished in approximately 2.5 hours. Service includes moving and wiping down furniture, vacuuming floor and intake vents, pretreating and steam cleaning the carpet. The products he uses, clean effectively and are safe for pets. His rates are reasonable and I am very pleased with the results. Will be calling him again.

My basement floor, size approximately 435 sq. ft., needed leveled. The floor height varied up to five and six inches toward the center. It sloped downward toward the drain in the front and back upward toward the front wall. The floor was painted concrete from at least 50 years ago, and in a few spots the concrete was slightly chipped and cracked. The rear of the basement had a slight slope but was not as drastic as the front part. I had cement contractors suggesting to break up only the front half of the existing concrete and pour new concrete. I also had another flooring contractor willing to pour the leveling compound Ardex. Cost for the Ardex job would have been $3,200, but that was for using only twenty-five 50# bags of Ardex. If I needed any more bags of Ardex, I would have to assume the cost after the first 25 bags at a cost of $60.00 per bag. I was very reluctant to do this. I found Bamm Flooring and Construction with a very good rating and called them. Tony Georgevich said he could use Quikrete Concrete Mix for leveling, as long as I covered the finished floor with either slate, ceramic or porcelain tile. Tony, Adrian and Ray did an excellent job. They worked for about two weeks from 7:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. The floor still had some unevenness. However, it was 95% improved. They ended up using over 117 bags of 60# Quikrete @ $2.78/bag. I was so glad I did not use the Ardex product. After this leveling was complete, they laid the tile. This floor required 30 cartons of Brazilian Slate Porcelain. My basement floor is such an improvement that I actually love working in it now. Tony is a perfectionist and you can tell he is proud of his work. I would recommend this company for any flooring job, regardless of the difficulty. After they finished the floor, I asked if Adrian could help me unclog my gutters and insert gutter guards, which he did. Overall, I am very happy with the job that these guys did and would call on them again for flooring or other household projects.

I recently hired First Choice Flooring and Installation to put carpet in my new town house. I had them come for an estimate, give me a quote ( which was way better than other companies quoted me) bring their own materials and start the project, all in such a timely manner! Joseph, the owner, stopped by to introduce himself and make sure his guys were running efficiently, but still keeping the top notch quality that they pride themselves on..and I can assure you that they definetly were! I would recommend them to anyone and already have! My own mother hired them for bamboo wood on her whole upstairs and carpet in the basement and absolutly raved about Joseph and First Choice! thanks again!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How often should carpets be steam cleaned?

Dirty carpets can be unhealthy for the people living in the home, particularly those who have allergies, so itโ€™s important to have them cleaned regularly; simply vacuuming once or twice a week isnโ€™t enough. Carpet cleaning should be done by a professional carpet cleaning service at least once a year to remove grime and help extend the life of your carpet. Most carpet manufacturers recommend professional steam cleaning, which penetrates deep into the carpet fibers and lifts out both dirt and the pollutants that get tracked inside. Steam cleaning also removes most of the moisture, so carpets dry quickly enough for homeowners to resume using them the same day. Between professional carpet cleanings, your carpet may need an emergency spot cleaning. Pet accidents, food or drink spills, and more can often be effectively cleaned with some water and a drop of white vinegar, although many cleaners will also make house calls for smaller spills and hard-to-clean spots like wine or grease stains.

Who cleans area rugs?

Like your carpets, area rugs should ideally be cleaned at least once a year to remove dust and dirt and help them last longer. In general, carpet cleaning professionals also clean area rugs. Some rug cleaners bring their cleaning equipment to your home, while others remove your area rugs and clean them at their facilities. Either way, the rug should be cleaned with the solution most appropriate to its specific fabric and construction. It should also be completely dry before you return it to the floor.

How much is the cheapest carpet?

If youโ€™re looking to reduce carpet installation costs, there are several ways to save. Start by considering your carpeting needs. Manufactured materials such as polyester and nylon will be cheaper than natural fibers such as wool. From big box retailers, starting prices for olefin-based carpet are approximately 50 cents per square foot โ€” making the cost under $5 per square yard. Indoor carpets made with olefin fibers are typically the least expensive on the market. Keep in mind that olefin fibers are not as soft on bare feet as other fibers, so are often used in areas like basements, playrooms or indoor patios. Nylon and polyester are good options to reduce carpet installation costs while still creating a cozy feel. The face weight, fiber construction and density of a carpet all affect the cost per square foot. The cheapest nylon or polyester carpets can start at just under $2 per square foot, making them about $18 per square yard. Lower-cost carpet tends to wear out more quickly and show stains more easily, so avoid light colors and vacuum regularly to keep the fibers clear of dirt that might age it too quickly.

How much does it cost to install carpet?

If youโ€™re ready to bring new life into your house with a makeover from the ground up, youโ€™re ready to learn more about carpet installation costs. Installation costs vary greatly, depending on a number of factors such as the type of carpet, the number of square yards, any necessary repair work, the number of stairs you have, and where you live. Due to these variables, the national average cost of carpet installation ranges between $200 and $4,500.

To start planning for your new carpet, measure roughly how many square yards of carpet youโ€™ll need. Research the main carpet styles and materials you like to get a feel for what they cost. Nylon carpets are typically the least expensive, and wool is one of the higher-end carpets. Prices per square foot might range from under $2 to over $10, depending on materials. Count the number of stairs you want carpeted; each one might average between $3 and $10 (or more for box steps). Carpet removal can be an added cost as well, averaging $1-$4 per square yard, depending on the company and regional disposal costs.ย

How much does it cost to clean a rug?

Area rugs are typically found in high-traffic areas of the home, like hallways and entryways, so they collect more dirt and stains than simple vacuuming can handle. Similar to carpet cleaning, professionals can come to your home to deep-clean your area rugs. The national average cost for rug cleaning ranges from $80 to $120, but may be higher or lower depending on the rugโ€™s size and fiber type. Rug cleaners generally charge by the square foot; for example, a standard 8-foot by 10-foot rug costs an average of $100 to clean. Natural fiber rugs, such as wool or silk, are usually more expensive to have cleaned than synthetic rugs. A carpeting cleaning company may charge on average $1.50 per square foot to clean a synthetic rug, $2 per square foot for a wool rug, and $3 per square foot for a silk rug. Some delicate rugs need to be washed by hand, which increases the price. Carpet cleaning companies often offer additional services, such as removing odors or applying moth deterrent, which can add 20 cents to 25 cents per square foot.
