Mickey repaired our furnace in our home in January 2015. He arrived when he promised, worked in a timely fashion, and completed the job efficiently and effectively. Mickey was very professional and his cost was comparatively reasonable to others. He went above and beyond by following up and contacting us to confirm everything was in working order and that we were pleased with our service. We will definitely use Mickey Pappas for future services should we need them and highly recommend him!

This is hands down the best HVAC company I have contracted. They put in a new furnace and air conditioning and zoned the house for efficiency. Everything went well from taking out the old to installing the new and cleaning up afterward. I would use them again and would recommend them to friends!

I can't say enough good things about Airstream. I bought this home this past year. The furnace was at least 50 years old. Last week it finally died. Airstream responded to my request within a half an hour. They came and diagnose the problem within 2 hours. And within 24 hours they were replacing my furnace. They did a great job. The price was right and the quality of the work was Top Notch. I wouldn't hesitate to call them again or recommend them to friends and family. Do yourself a favor and give these guys a call if you need HVAC work.

Sam and Russell were prompt and got my furnace back up and running very quickly. They didn't try to get me to unnecessarily buy a new furnace but fixed mine for a very reasonable price. They did state I needed a new one soon but were honest regarding the condition of my current furnace and also it's efficiency. I will definitely be calling them for planned replacement.

He performed the check up service of my heating and air conditioning system and made extra effort to explain some things about my heat/air system and make it easier to get my furnace filter out to change it. R.Davis mechanical helped me out with a furnace issue I was having, the furnace was working intermittently and Rob sent Chris a HVAC technician to check it out. I was not home so my wife explained the problem and was impressed by how thorough Chris was and looked at all aspects of the furnace to make sure we were good going forward for the winter. He even checked out our humidifier. All this in a very responsive manner!! Thanks for your help in a pinch!! John

John was very friendly and explored all options with me to find the best solution. Work is very professional. Our slow drain now drains at light speed and everything is clamped and braced so it's a solid system. Work was completed about a month ago now and everything works perfectly. I'll definitely be using him for any future plumbing work.

Although my company is small, it allows me to choose which jobs that I would like to do. I don't like the "Let's hurry up, get it done, and move on to the next job" attitude, although I finish all of my jobs to the customers' satisfaction, in the allotted amount of time. Also, I am a veteran of the U.S.A.F.

We do housecleaning, laundry, carpet cleaning, HVAC, furnace cleaning and installing of ceramic tile floors. We do it all.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    Who fixes furnaces?

If your furnace needs to be repaired, you’ll want to find a qualified heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) repair technician. Each state has its own licensing requirements; some require all HVAC technicians to have an HVAC license, while others only require someone operating an HVAC service and installation company with employees to hold a contractor’s license. For example, in Alabama, the Alabama Board of Heating Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration Contractors regulates licensing, while in Kansas there is no state regulatory body and HVAC licensing can vary by region. For simple furnace repairs like changing out a filter, a trusted handyman can probably handle the job, but a trained professional should be hired for tasks like replacing a gas valve, installing a new inducer fan motor or other critical furnace repair jobs that involve dealing with gas leaks or other dangerous conditions. How much will it cost me to replace my furnace?

The national average for furnace replacement is between $1,800 and $2,500. The cost can range dramatically higher depending on the model of furnace you select, any repair work you require, your location and the cost of installation. Furnace installation costs can be more than the furnace itself due to the cost of doing business and the expertise needed to install the HVAC equipment. Installing a new furnace generally requires technical know-how and the proper tools and licensing. It’s best to hire a pro and budget for furnace installation rather than risk potentially unsafe DIY installation. This will ensure your home’s safety. Check to see if your HVAC contractor has the proper licensing to do the job. If you need duct repair or replacement, expect to pay more for your furnace installation costs. The price for duct repair could be an hourly rate ranging on average anywhere from $85 to $150 per hour, with additional costs for parts.

How much does it cost to replace a gas furnace?

The cost to replace your gas furnace will vary based on the type and size of furnace you select, labor and installation costs, and any repairs your HVAC system may need. Nationally, average HVAC prices for a heating specialist range between $1,800 and $2,500. It’s important to select the right size gas furnace for your heating needs. A furnace that’s too small won’t heat your house properly, while a furnace that’s too large will run inefficiently, cycling on and off and likely breaking down sooner. HVAC specialists calculate your exact heat needs by measuring your home and incorporating variables such as the regional climate and your home’s level of insulation. Retail pricing for gas furnaces can range from $650 up to $3,000 and more. The higher the AFUE (annual fuel utilization efficiency) rating of the furnace, the more efficient it is at turning fuel into heat and the lower your carbon footprint and utility bill will be. HVAC installation costs are often based on an hourly rate and can range from under $50 to over $100 per hour, depending on the company and the furnace being installed. Higher-end furnaces cost more to install because they require added labor and expertise. For a typical installation, it might take two HVAC installation pros one day or less to remove your old furnace and replace it with a new one.

How much does it cost to have your furnace cleaned?

To keep your furnace in good working order it’s important to have it regularly cleaned. The national average furnace cleaning cost ranges from $60 to $80, though prices can vary greatly based on where you live in the country and what your furnace maintenance includes. An HVAC company may have different rates for different levels of furnace maintenance. For example, one company may offer general furnace maintenance for $79 and advanced maintenance for $138. Another company may offer a 38-point maintenance check for $89 and a 64-point maintenance check for $178. According to Energy.gov, a standard furnace cleaning and maintenance visit can include:

    • Checking the vent connection pipe and chimney
    • Checking the physical integrity of the heat exchanger
    • Adjusting the controls to provide optimum air temperatures
    • Checking the combustion chamber for cracks
    • Testing for carbon monoxide (CO)
    • Adjusting the blower control and supply-air temperature
    • Cleaning and oiling the blower
    • Removing soot and corrosion from the furnace
    • Checking the fuel input and flame characteristics
    • Sealing the connections between the furnace and the main ducts

How much will it cost me to replace my air conditioner?

If your AC system is in need of replacement, the national average air conditioner installation costs range from $2,930 to $3,670. Costs can vary greatly depending on whether you are replacing a wall or window unit or a central air system. A central air system is connected to ductwork that runs throughout your house and pumps cooled air into your various rooms via vents and registers. A central air conditioning system is far more costly than wall or window units. Selecting a central AC system that has a high seasonal energy-efficiency ratio (SEER) will likely lower both your carbon footprint and your utility bill. The type of AC system you select, where you live in the country, and the regional costs of HVAC work, duct removal and replacement, and ductwork repairs that are needed are some of the main factors that affect the cost of new air conditioner installation. Here are some examples of average costs for installing forced-air systems.

    • Install Lennox 16 SEER single-stage AC unit: $5,743
      • Removing and disposing of the old furnace, moving and reconnecting the water heater, and installing a 3.5-ton gas furnace. The job took 18 hours of labor.
    • Installation of a new 14 SEER single-range cooling system: $4,000-$6,000
    • Installation of a new 16 SEER two-range cooling system: $6,000-$8,000
    • Installation of a new 20 SEER variable capacity cooling system: $8,000-$12,000
