Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much should interior painting cost per square foot?

You can expect a 12x12-foot average room with 8-foot ceilings to cost $100 to paint, while a 16x16-foot room with 9-foot ceilings could cost around $175.

To calculate the cost of interior painting per square foot, measure the square footage of wall space and ceiling space of your room. From this, you can estimate the number of gallons of paint needed to cover the wall space and compare it to these figures. You can also ask interior painters near you to provide an estimate before you hire them.

How much do painters cost?

The national average cost to hire an interior painter ranges between $200-$2,700. Interior painters can tackle everything from complete color makeovers in each of your rooms to touching up an accent wall to painting pieces of furniture. The square footage and complexity of the project, along with the materials needed, are the main factors that will affect cost. Other factors include whether you supply the paint yourself or want the painter to do so, whether you move the furniture and do the prep work or ask them to do it, and whether any repair work is needed on the walls.

Painting the ceiling and the trim will also have an effect on cost. The type of paint you choose can also raise or lower your house painting cost. A gallon of paint may range from $20 to over $100, depending on quality and brand. Ask your painter if they charge per hour or per square foot, and how much you can save by doing prep work (moving furniture, etc.) yourself.

How much does it cost to paint the interior of a house?

Interior house painting costs are calculated on a few key factors. Nationally, interior house painting projects range from $917 (for one room) to $4,893 (for eight rooms). The wide price range indicates how much square footage, paint selection and labor can affect cost. One pro uses a laser to measure each room, subtracting the size of the doors and windows, and then bases the quote on the square footage of the actual surfaces to be painted.

Painters may provide you with savings if you opt to paint your entire home rather than just having one room or an accent wall painted. For example, the average house painting cost for an 8x12 room with 8-foot ceilings is roughly $200, when contractor-grade paint is used. Painting ceilings, baseboards and frames can also affect cost. Pros may charge per linear foot to smooth and paint baseboards.

In one area, pros might charge 50 cents per linear foot to paint baseboards, while pros in another part of the country could charge $1.50 per linear foot for the same task. Painters may charge flat rates for painting door and window frames, with one charging $20-$25 and another $60 per door. Geography and regional costs to do business play a major role in the cost of interior painting. The same painter in a rural region has less to pay in taxes, transportation, insurance and overhead than they would in a major city like New York.

How much do interior painters charge per hour?

You can expect to pay $50 per hour for interior painting. This price will change depending on a number of factors and may range between $30 and $160 per hour. Some factors include the height of the rooms, the complexity of the painting and more.

For an accurate cost estimate, request quotes from local painters and contractors.

How often should you paint your walls?

You should repaint your home interior once every few years, depending on the condition of the current paint.

Paint on walls fades over time, regardless of the room — it could happen in a bedroom, kitchen, dining room, living room or bathroom. However, paint that is exposed to more dirt, particularly flat or matte paint textures, may need repainting more frequently.

Areas of the bathroom or kitchen that routinely get touched may show signs of collecting dirt and grease over time. These would require more frequent painting.

If you're ready to repaint the walls in your home, get free estimates from the best painters near you.

How much value does painting add to a house?

Due to a lack of data available, it’s hard to say whether painting your home’s interior or exterior will increase its value. But there are some important things to keep in mind.

If you're thinking about selling your home, you might want to repaint areas that look especially worn, dull or chipped so your house looks fresh and new to potential buyers. On the other hand, it’s possible some potential buyers will repaint the home upon moving in. So if you have a limited budget, your money (and time) might be better invested in other types of home projects, such as remodeling your bathroom or kitchen, installing new floors or fixing broken appliances

When in doubt, check with your realtor before making a final decision.

Do you tip painters?

Yes, it’s best practice to tip house painters if you’re pleased with their work. Painters perform detailed, skilled work that can last for many years, if not decades.

Tipping house painters is good etiquette. You can base the tip on the size of the crew, and request the amount to be evenly divided. Or, you can leave a tip based on the size of the job and leave it up to the foreman to decide how it is distributed among the crew. Sometimes — especially with big projects — the painters on the job change during the course of the project, so it’s often customary to leave one tip for the whole job.

How long does it take to paint a room?

The length of time it takes to paint a room varies, depending on a couple of factors. For example, the size of the job makes a difference. With a small bedroom, or with only a wall or two that have to be painted, the job can be done in half a day. Larger jobs take longer.

Also, if there are several different colors being used, the job may take longer, as one may have to dry before the other is applied. A 12-by-12 room with one color may take a morning. With multiple colors, the job may stretch into the afternoon.

Before you hire an interior painter near you, ask them how long it will take to paint the room(s) in your home.

What should I look for when choosing a painter?

When choosing a painter, pay attention to online reviews and ratings. Reviews with pictures are especially valuable, as these showcase the painter’s work. It’s also important to check whether your state requires licenses for painters — if it’s required, your contractor should be able to present their license.

Finally, compare estimates and quotes from multiple painters near you. Take into consideration what each one guarantees with the job, including factors like higher-quality paint, extensive preparation and a good warranty.

Should you wash walls before painting?

Yes, in most cases you’ll want to clean your wall before painters start. Washing walls before painting helps get rid of dirt and grime that could affect how the paint adheres, including primer. You can do this using a wall washer, especially if the top of the wall is hard to reach.

The best way to clean walls is to use a solvent that won’t affect the surface underneath. Some experts recommend using a sponge, warm water and/or a mild detergent or soap. Abrasive washing may remove some of the current pain.

Cleaning painted walls should be done with care. If you’re not comfortable with washing the walls yourself, consider hiring a house cleaner near you.

We contracted John to paint the interior of a rental property, which required painting, patch work, and some creative solutions. John tackled these problems quickly and politely. He came back after finishing for minimal touch ups. We're happy with the work and would contract him again.

I would recommend John to anyone needing interior painting. He is professional, timely, provides good quality painting and a fair price. He worked on our ceilings and painted 4 rooms, 5 closets, a hallway and entryway in 5 days. This was great for us because the project would have taken us much more time and frustration. Thanks again John!

Sean did an amazing job! I am so pleased with the whole process. I received a quote, and had the job done the next week. I had my entry, stairway with very high ceiling and upstairs hallway painted. It all looks amazing. The paint used was top quality. We had a water stain on the ceiling, and you would never know it. My home was left spotless. If you need any interior painting done, then Farrell Painting is the one to use. A big thumbs up...

I am extremely pleased with Hilson Painting. John Hilson inspected the job and provided a detailed quote within two days. He started the work at the agreed upon time and completed the work within the time estimated, while repairing some damaged wall sections not covered in the quote. All wall, ceiling and trim areas were beautifully painted. Clean up upon completion was very good, much better than I expected. I highly recommend Hilson Painting for your interior painting professional. L Lundeen

I interviewed 4 painting companies for a large interior painting project and hired Kerstons . This was a very expensive project and it was very important that I hire a painter that was going to deliver and this company did. I could not get over how perfect the lines were. This job required lots of patch work due to previous damage , after they were done it is imposable to see where any of the patches were. You can trust this company and that's important, plus they do great work.

Ethan was wonderful to work with, I highly recommend Souza Remodeling. I was impressed, right from the start, with his quick communication, and easy to work with personality. We had the whole interior of our new house painted (walls, trim, ceilings, and doors). The previous owners had put a lot of wear and tear on the walls, and the team did a wonderful job repairing the damage before painting. Everything turned out great. The house finally feels like our home!

The interior painting of the rooms was done in a professional manner and Cosme cleaned very thoroughly. May I suggest that for future undertakings , you make clients aware of the payment options you prefer. We were a little taken off guard with Zelle since we do not have a Zelle payment method set up on our banking institution account.

Our experience with Augustine Painting was less than satisfactory. We hired them to paint the whole interior of our new house and the end result was not at the quality we expected based on all of the good reviews. Although Ken and his son were friendly and they were able to get to us pretty quickly, we are disappointed with the final product. We paid for the work as promised but we basically came to the conclusion that we weren’t going to get everything addressed as we wanted so we decided to cut our losses. From paint on our floors/carpets/furniture/baseboards/ceiling/doors/banisters to areas clearly not doubled coated to rooms left in total disarray, we just couldn’t have the project continue any longer. Between hours of cleanup and the potential of needing another painter, we have been frustrated with the entire process.

We are so happy that we chose Sean to do the interior painting for our new home. He was very fair and transparent in his pricing, and was an excellent communicator when it came to scheduling. During the process, Sean made a point to seek out our feedback while still offering his professional opinion. He is also a nice guy, which is always good when a person is in your house for two days. We couldn't believe how flawless his work was- like NO mistakes or missed corners and messy edges whatsoever. Sean is priced very competitively, and I would be willing to pay more than he asks for the quality of work that he does. Highly recommend!

Background: My fiancé and I purchased a condo in downtown Pittsburgh in late November of 2014. We were ending our rental-lease at another location in downtown on December 31, 2014, and had a move-in date planned for the end of December. We planned to contract a complete interior makeover of the condo before moving in, so we had a deadline of a few weeks to get it done. Augustine Painting came in and completed a high-quality project on 1600 square feet of condominium living space for us, including removing all wallpaper (every room), painting all walls/trim in the condo, repairing damaged walls and electrical plates, repairing damaged doors/trim/fixtures, and assisting in repairing appliances, all while beating our deadline. Communication: Ken responded within hours after we contacted him on Thumbtack, and he was able to come directly to our condo within 48 hours to give us a quote and overview of his services. He was highly personable, professional, to the point, and upfront with any issues or concerns that he had as we made the initial walk through. Following the walk through, he and his wife then provided us with an easy to follow and competitively priced proposal which we accepted. Ken and his crew began working immediately. He kept me informed daily on what exactly was being done, making sure to be straight forward and thorough in his communications. He was also specific, upfront, and reasonable regarding anything that he felt was out of scope from our original contract. We had Ken perform a little more work that we had originally planned due to some unforeseen circumstances, and he quickly provided us with additional contracts/documents of scope where needed. Throughout the process, Ken exceeded our expectations in his responsiveness. If one of us called him and he was unable to answer it immediately, he would almost always give us a call back within minutes. Quality: Our unit was originally designed and decorated in the mid-1980s, so there was faded, peeling, flower-covered wallpaper throughout the condo. The first project was for Ken to remove all of this in a timely manner. To our pleasure, most of it was removed within a few days. To specifically point out Ken’s handiness and versatility, we had one bathroom in the unit which had very thick, hard glue beneath the wallpaper. Ken was unable to use chemicals or steam to remove it, so he had several of his associates sand and detail the bathroom before painting it. It turned just as faultless as the rest of the condo when it was all said and done. The second project was painting, which was also done in a precise and high quality matter. After Ken had finished the initial painting, he allowed us to go to the condo to inspect it. He gave us a blue roll of tape, and he told us to put a small piece anywhere that we wanted a touch up or found a splatter. To our pleasure, we found only a few trouble spots which were corrected the next day. Summary: Overall, we were 100% satisfied with the work that Augustine Painting provided us with. I would recommend Ken to anyone looking to contract interior wallpaper removal or painting.

We hired Wes to paint the entire interior of our home white. It is incredibly disappointing for me to leave a review like this, hence the reason it has taken me weeks to leave it. Wes started off great — very professional, kind, punctual, etc. He essentially ghosted us and left us with an unfinished job, apparently due to a car accident. Ironically, Wes also took all of his supplies the night before he never came back, despite the fact that he left everything the other 7 days he worked at our house. We totally understand that unforeseen circumstances do arise, but he could have definitely given us a time frame he was planning to come back and finish at least the work we paid for, let alone the other rooms he quoted us for. If he had no intentions of returning, a refund for the unfinished portions, or even a heads up, would have been appreciated. We were left with an unpainted mantle, and a hallway, bathroom, and bedroom that needed an additional coat. The fact that there are reviews more recent than when Wes was at our house, I’m inclined to believe he found a better offer and didn’t think the job remaining was worth returning. As business owners, this is incredibly disappointing. We intentionally chose Wes after getting a few other quotes due to him owning a small business. May be a great choice for a small job but I would not recommend for a large job.
