I originally hired them to trim a tree in the front yard. I was so amazing pleased with their pricing, responsiveness, and ability to cater to my needs that I asked them to look at my back yard for an additional estimate. They are now also completing additional work for my yard as well! They also have given me suggestions of who to contact for my next home renovation. As a new home owner, it has been a relief to find a contractor that is willing to work with me on what I want in a timely fashion that is cost effective and that I can trust.

We had one our tree's trimmed by TJM. It was an overgrown evergreen tree and they did a great job of shaping the tree and clearing some of the limbs that had crossed onto our neighbor's property. The job was done while we were out of the house, which was very convenient for us. However, we did need them to return for one more branch that was sticking out a bit. They were happy to finish the job and even did so while contending with a nasty bee's nest. Overall the job was done very well and we are very satisfied with the results. The clean up was good too. The reason I deducted stars is related to scheduling the appointments. The scheduling process was a bit unorganized and required quite a bit of back and forth. However, this was a pretty minor issue and I would still recommend TJM for your tree trimming job.

Matt and his team removed 2 large maples trees from my back yard. This job was challenged by a steep hill and blistering cold weather. I was amazed with outcome- perfect removal, no debris left behind, punctual, everything promised delivered. Super friendly guys, even after a long day trekking up and down that hill! I will hire this company for every future landscaping project.

The upper part of backyard had been neglected about 10 years. a maple cut then had brown into 5 trees making too much shade and a danger for electric wires. Eric worked with a good young arborist on the weekend for no extra charge and a very reasonable price. They took precautions to protect a young plant close by and worked efficiently. On Monday he came back with his crew and cleaned the whole backyard and howled the trees to the smallest debris. They even did a thorough leaves cleanup. I was amazed to see how well and fast they worked. Eric was so pleasant, listened, communicated so well that I hired them to clean our basement.

I live in Greensburg PA in a 79 yr. old home. There were 5 maple trees surrounding my home that we're huge and reaching over my roof. In spring of 2017 friends from church recommended Stockton tree service. Travis and his crew took down 5 trees, ground 3 stumps, and added top soil to level my yard. These men were so careful with enormous limbs not to damage my home or property. I also had them trim trees and brush along 200 ft. of fence line. Stockton removed the old trees, cleaning up continually, and now my roof is safe and I can manage my property much easier. This was a big job and it turned out really nice.

TLC really helped me out getting some much needed trimming done on my huge pinkoak in the front of the house. He not only trimmed the tree, he cut wood and stacked it for my firepit and he cleaned up the remaining pieces. Thanks Ben! I will be in touch very soon for my next project.

Working with Steve was great. I had 4 large trees removed, with one being in a problem position. Steve quoted me for the job, but his partner came out and said based on the problem tree they may need to increase the price by $100 (one day project turned into a two day based on his professional opinion). Steve said that since the price would need to go up, they would be happy to do a little additional hedge trimming for us within that price. As such both my wife and I were very satisfied with the work for both the tree removal and hedge work. would 100% use again.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to remove a tree stump?

Once you have a tree cut down, you’ll probably want to remove the tree stump as well. You may want the stump removed for aesthetics, the tree stump could be diseased, you might want to prevent regrowth, or you may find the roots are causing problems and need to be removed. Tree removal costs don’t always include the cost to grind out or dig out a tree stump after the tree has been felled and the trunk removed. The national average cost for stump removal ranges from $150 to $200. There are two main methods for dealing with tree stumps. In grinding, pros use a chipping machine to grind away the above-level tree stump until it sits just below the soil surface. Tree stump removal entails lifting the entire root ball of a tree out of the soil. Removing the stump will leave a hole in the ground and also take more time, labor and money than stump grinding. Here are some examples of average tree stump removal costs:

  • Stump grinding: $2-$4 per inch.
  • Tree stump removal: average of $60-$350.

The final price will depend on the stump’s size, condition, location and condition of the soil around it.

How much does it cost to trim a tree?

The national price range for tree trimming is $270-$450. Tree trimming is often done by a professional arborist who is trained to safely trim and prune trees for both the health of the tree and the safety of the residents and their property. Trying to do your own tree trimming is not advisable unless you have the proper know-how. Tree trimming companies may charge an hourly rate for their services. The hourly rate may be higher or lower for different trees to reflect the relative safety measures, skill, equipment or people power needed to handle the job. For this reason, most tree services provide free estimates.

One example of an hourly rate for professional tree trimming services is $150 per hour. Costs may be under $100 or could be higher than $300 per hour, depending on variables such as proximity to buildings, health of the tree, height and diameter of the tree, and type of tree trimming desired. Geography and regional cost of living and regional costs to do business will also play a role in your tree removal costs.

How much does it cost to remove a fallen tree?

If you need to have a tree cut down, have you planned what will happen next? Arborists often charge an additional fee to quarter and remove the fallen tree from your property, so anticipate this as part of your tree removal costs. You can elect to have the wood cut for use in your fireplace, or you may prefer to have it hauled away completely.

Tree removal costs may vary based on the height and the width of the felled tree. Size affects the labor required for removal, which will be reflected in the cost. For example, a tree service company may charge an additional $100-$120 to haul away the pieces of a felled tree. The service may cost as little as $75 in some regions and more than $150 in others. Regional labor rates, the cost of living and the cost to do business in your area will be reflected in your tree removal cost.

How much does it cost to cut a tree down?

When you’re ready to have a tree on your property come down, it’s time to call an arborist. The national average price range for tree-trimming costs is $270-$450. Tree removal costs can vary based on the height, diameter, location and health of the tree, and on whether you want to remove the stump. Height plays a major role in tree removal costs. Small trees, no more than 30 feet tall, are usually thinner in diameter and easier and safer for an arborist to manage. Removal of a small tree can cost anywhere from under $150 to over $450. Removal of medium-height trees, from 30 feet to 60 feet tall, could cost anywhere between $150 and $850 or more. Tall trees, typically 60 feet to 80 feet tall, may start at $500 or cost more than $1,000 to cut down. As the height and diameter increase, so does the cost.

Location is critical, too. Removing a tree in an open space is quicker and presents fewer obstacles than removing a tree that is growing flush to your house. Arborists can assess your tree and provide you with quotes based on the variables involved. For example, removing a medium-size hackberry tree that was growing too close to a home — the roots were damaging the home’s foundation — cost $1,500. This price included rope-down, house protection, tree quartering and stacking, and stump removal.

How much does it cost to cut down a massive tree?

If you have to remove a big, beautiful tree from your property, you’ll definitely need an arborist. Cutting down a massive tree without the proper tools or training can lead to major property damage or injury. A huge tree may need to be removed if it is diseased or dying and poses a safety risk, has suffered a blow from a storm and isn’t safe, or is growing into your home, your home’s foundation, your septic system, or your power lines. Removal costs for such large trees will depend on the tree’s height, diameter, and relative safety and accessibility, as well as whether you also need the felled tree and stump removed. The bare minimum for removal of a tree over 75 or 80 feet would be $1,000. This may not include tree quartering and removal or stump grinding. Stump grinding ranges on average from $2 to $4 per inch of the stump’s diameter. There is no set price as each situation is unique, so it’s always best to have an arborist give you a quote and detail exactly which services are included in the price.
