Your burning questions: answered

Can I use digital payments to pay for moving services?

Most local moving companies are likely to accept some form of digital payment. Particularly with the COVID-19 pandemic, more companies are likely to conduct transactions through platforms like PayPal, Zelle, Square Cash, Venmo, Google Pay and more.

To ensure the mover accepts a platform you can use, you can peruse the mover’s online profile and see what is listed there. You can also ask the mover about payment policies during a consultation call.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a mover during the COVID-19 pandemic?

If you’re trying to set up a consultation or an appointment with a mover during the COVID-19 pandemic, make sure to use digital tools to avoid exposure. When searching for movers online, ask if they’d be willing to do a video chat to assess the size of your move. This will be in place of the typical “walk-through” they perform, and they may be able to give you a price quote. You can also discuss safe strategies for completing the job during your call or video chat.

How can I find out if a mover is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Your local city or state’s government website is a great resource if you’re trying to figure out whether a mover is considered an essential service provider during the COVID-19 pandemic.

For a source of national guidelines, visit the CISA website’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19. On this page, you’ll find 16 categories of critical infrastructure sectors. But note that some -- not all --  jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Does a mover need to enter my home?

A mover will likely need to enter your home -- unless you’ve placed all of your belongings outside beforehand. To stay safe during the COVID-19 pandemic, you might to consider keeping all (or most) of the work outside and/or having at-risk individuals leave the house while the movers work.

You can minimize exposure by doing a preliminary walk-through by video call instead of in person. Discuss your options with the top movers near you before hiring one.

Do movers offer remote or virtual services?

Movers generally need to be present to do their job. But if you come across a mover’s profile that states they’re offering remote services, you can contact them to see what those services include.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire a mover when social distancing?

If you decide to hire a mover, consider making adjustments to accommodate current guidelines. This may involve staying outside while the mover works inside your home or letting the mover handle only parts of the move.

It’s important to follow social distancing guidelines while performing any service work. For example, do not make physical contact with the movers, maintain at least 6 feet of distance between you at all times, and use digital payments instead of cash or a check.

What is considered a local move vs. a long-distance move?

Local moves are among the most common moves. Unlike a long-distance move, a local move is typically less than 50 miles and does not cross state lines. Generally, a local move only takes one day, and movers tend to charge by the hour.

The definition of a long-distance move may vary depending on the moving company. Generally, a long-distance considered to be any move of 400 miles or more. However, some say a long-distance move is over 50-100 miles.

Local Move

A move under 50 miles

Long-Distance Move

A move over 50-100 miles or over 400 miles; may also be called an “interstate move” or “out-of-state move”

Out-of-State Move

A move that crosses state lines; may also be called an “interstate move” or “long-distance move”

Interstate Move

A move that crosses state lines; may also be called an “out-of-state move” or “long-distance move”

Intrastate Move

A move that begins and ends in the same state, typically beyond 50 miles

Interstate moves require additional legal preparation and will incur additional costs for distance, the amount and weight of your items, the preparation required and various other factors. Moving companies tend to do an initial weighing of the truck, which you should be present for.

A move that crosses state lines is considered an interstate move or an out-of-state move. Contrast this with an intrastate move, which begins and ends in the same state, but is typically above 50 miles.

To determine whether your move is local or long-distance, contact the best movers in your area.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

Can you move furniture by yourself?

You might be able to move smaller items like nightstands, small desks, chairs and small tables by yourself. However, it’s best to get a professional mover near you to move larger items such as couches, dressers, armoires and televisions.

If you do decide to move furniture by yourself, carefully lift and lower items and take your time.

Is it cheaper to move your stuff or buy new stuff?

It often makes more financial sense to buy new stuff when you have the chance to sell furniture to offset the cost. The cost of moving your current furniture can sometimes be more than buying new things, particularly if the furniture is large or cumbersome to move. You can sell furniture online, or make a furniture donation and deduct it from your taxes (if it qualifies as a charitable contribution). Some places near you may even offer free furniture pickup when you choose to donate.

If you have valuable furniture that would be costly to replace, however, it may be cheaper to move them. To find out which option is best for you, contact professional movers in your area to receive quotes and estimates.

The quote was for 4 men, only 3 arrived. They were late and I had to call looking for them. The were very hard working and nice gentlemen, but not careful. They did not lay down plastic covering as a path over flooring when moving in/out the house. I have never had movers skip floor covering. They banged up a few pieces moving up/down stairs and put several gouges in the walls. They did the job, but less professional than my previous exerpiences with other moving companies.

I chose Adam and his team for my move b/c of the reviews. I’m glad they were all true. My move was from a townhouse to a storage unit. The two guys working on the move did a great job on maneuvering all my big furniture through the tight stairwells. They were professional and careful throughout the entire time. I would certainly recommend to others and use them again.

This was our first and only experience with movers and we are so happy we chose On Demand Moving Services! Lanre and his entire team were so professional, courteous and easy to do business with. We even had to change our move date and they easily accommodated us! The entire process was so smooth, they showed up on time, and were extremely polite, helped us get all of our things in order and told us an estimate of the time it would take. Best of all they took really good care of our belongings and were extremely friendly. They even came in under estimate which saved us money and time. I would HIGHLY recommend them to anyone moving or considering using movers. We went back on forth with hiring someone or doing it ourselves and I will tell you that my husband and I were so relieved afterwards that used On Demand Moving Services instead of trying to do it all ourselves. It was worth every penny.

These guys are fantastic! The quote they offered was a great price, and the craftsmanship was second to none. Titus and his coworker are skilled and committed contractors I hired them to move a 40 year old table, and replace the felt and bumpers. Although the move was flawless, the age of the table complicated the bumper repair. The provided me with the opportunity to schedule the second date at my convenience. Although circumstances delayed the start of work on the second day, they kept working until 9pm to complete the job perfectly. I highly recommend these guysto anyone needin pool table moves or repairs!

Had a "yucky" job.... moving my son's belongings out of a low-ceiling basement (I'm 6'1") and knew that 50% of what was down there unseen would have to be trashed. In the midst of making 20+ calls to local movers and dumpster providers, we received a quick response from David / Kingdom Movers with an initial bid. This was my first experience with Thumbtack so I was a bit leery. I was immediately able to speak with David over the phone and explained my initial plan re: movers transporting all of the contents out of the basement with some going into an on-site dumpster. He outlined his plan of action (3 movers with a 16' truck) and then offered a cost saving alternative -- they would load and dump our unwanted stuff, and then move our saved belongings into the storage unit for a very reasonable price. Date and time immediately confirmed! David and his team showed up and I knew within five minutes, this was going to go much faster than I had ever imagined. He quickly outlined the plan with his team, and all I had to do was review each box/item quickly and designate its "destination" (storage vs. dump). Only one hour and twenty minutes to clear a place packed "Hoarder" style up the basement stairs into 2 piles and into the truck. A small glitch with our local dump sites delayed the move a bit, but it was not problematic especially since the team had included one extra person than originally planned. David actually had to arrange the dump unloading for a separate day/time and the way in which his team consolidated everything to fit into an already packed storage unit was so impressive. David and his team were so courteous, friendly, and never complained about any of the inconveniences, i.e., the heat, the basement, the dump delay, etc. The end price was actually a bit less than we had estimated. I know without a doubt when it's time for our next move, I will not have a problem finding a reputable and incredible moving company.

Needed to have one piece of furniture picked up and delivered, plus two heavy entertainment centers moved upstairs. Dave and Austin met me promptly, were courteous and professional, and took great care in moving the items - both to and within my home - and the job was fairly priced. I am planning to use their services again and am pleased to highly recommend them!!

Eric was wonderful to work with for all our moving needs and even helped us find a great place to use for storage. Pricing was excellent and and wonderful work quality as well! Would recommend to anyone and will be using them again ourselves in the near future! Also was a bonus that he was able to disassemble our outdoor play set and move and reassemble at our new house. Many companies do not offer that.

Two men showed up at 9:30pm for a 6:00pm move. They had been working all day and were exhausted when they arrived. Moved very slowly. Worked until 1am and left with less than half the truck full. My husband and I were carrying boxes to try to speed up the process also. Were supposed to arrive the next morning at 9 to finish, but arrived at 10:30. Had 4 people, but 2 were the same from the night before and working on practically no sleep. Our settlement was supposed to be 11:30 but got pushed back to 4:00 because house was not cleared out for new owners. Had to hire buyers 2 movers to help load truck. They were super fast and cheaper. wish I had hired them. Very slow unloading at new house too. No apology from Adam, just excuses. Do not hire!

Although there was a delay in arrival it was for good reason. Aaron and Omar were awesome in every regard. It was a last minute job and it was done at the highest level of professionalism efficiency all while being friendly. The best moving experience I have had.

Showed up right on time and got to work. Carefully wrapped all furniture and kept us on schedule. Difficult move as I was going from a large house to a small condo, so a stop at a storage unit was required in between. They handled that without any problems and continued with the rest of the move on schedule. Very friendly, polite and helpful throughout. Pricing is very fair and you deal directly with the owner, Lanre, on the business end who answers all questions concisely and quickly through phone and email - you're never waiting days to get an answer back. Would definitely use again and recommend to others.

Try answering/responding to requests. UPDATE (a week after my first review) Seeing that you are painting me as an impatient prick, let me share some actual facts. First of all, it wasn't thirty minutes bud. I messaged you the day before as well. And at least 3 more times the next day. I just wrote the review after the last failed attempt of contacting you while you were "online." My understanding is that if you are online, you are actively answering questions. Your status said "online now" at least a half dozen times with no response. It took you how long to actually respond? A week? Sorry, but you're in a business where people have to make moves and there are deadlines. I had a deadline. Bad business on your part. So spare me the life lesson on my impatience and focus on running your business more efficiently. You think you're the only one who is busy? I also have a three year old so I completely understand impatience and that was absolutely NOT the case here. I would have loved to use your business because the movers I ended up using were terrible. They might have been terrible but they got back to me when I messaged them....yah know, the same day...not a week later. Better luck next time.
