Ms. Jill was excellent from the start. She met with my daughter for an initial "introduction" meeting before getting started with an actual tutoring session to ensure it would be a good fit and that my daughter would be comfortable with her. She spoke in length with me to get to know my child's strengths, weaknesses, personalities and what exactly I was looking for in a tutor. Ms. Jill really connects with my daughter and works to find out where she is weak in reading comprehension and vocabulary so she can help strengthen those weaknesses. My daughter has a learning difference and Ms. Jill has proven to be able to navigate through that to help her understand the information being taught. She is very patient, kind and understanding which makes it a great fit for my daughter who can at times be very sensitive and get frustrated when not catching on as quick as she would like to. In just a few sessions, Ms. Jill has helped boost her confidence and given her strategies to help with reading comprehension, synonyms, antonyms and vocabulary in school and during testing. I highly recommend Mrs. Max as a tutor, especially for children with learning differences. She really gets through and makes a difference.

LEAH IS ABSOLUTELY WONDERFUL!!! I have a 19 year old son who needed extra help with Math, preparing for his ACT. Leah took the time in the beginning to find out how he learns and what style works best for him. This key!!! She is well prepared and takes her tutoring seriously. I can honestly say for the first time he comes home feeling confident about what he is learning he is not intimidated, not afraid to ask questions. First time learning Math without becoming frustrated. Highly recommend Leah, she is an excellent teacher, she is patient, soft spoken and really cares about what she is doing!! THANK YOU LEAH BERL!!!

We are so excited to have found Brandon!! From the beginning we knew we were in good hands. First, Brandon was so thorough in his communication - very clear in where to meet, when he’d be there, sent google calendar blocks, aligned on content of the meeting, met with me after to fill me in on what he went over with my 10 year old daughter, gave her notes of what they discussed to take home and then followed up with an email to me to summarize. It was fantastic!! Further, my daughter left feeling like she now understands decimals! She told me that Brandon made it really easy to understand, and while she loves her math teacher, it’s just harder in the classroom to get that 1:1 attention. We are so glad that we have connected with Brandon! Thank you, thank you Brandon!!

Throughout my high school education, my math teachers were always my favorite and Mrs. Thambidurai was no exception! During my time as her student, I not only learned the material she was teaching, but also understood how and when to apply the concepts. She used real-world examples and numbers to have us better understand some pretty abstract concepts. Another reason I enjoyed learning through Mrs. T was due to the fact that she never taught at us/lectured at us. She guided and worked through concepts with us so that we could learn them for ourselves. Mrs. Thambidurai is tough and diligent in making sure you understand whatever it is you’re learning, however, she keeps things interesting and always made sure that we were enjoying what we were doing (as much as she can with what she was teaching!). I would not have wanted to learn statistics from anyone else, and credit my success in college to her comprehensive teaching style.

Steve is a great math tutor. He helped me reach my target GRE score an a little over a month and a half of bi-weekly tutoring. Th eonline format is PERFECT for a busy working mom like myself. What makes Steve's tutoring unique is that it is 100% tailored to your needs not what a set curriculum some course designed. He is open and engaging as well. If you are looking for a great math tutor Steve is the man!

Ms. Musick has been working with my 9th grade daughter in Algebra II. I can't not say enough about how this tutoring has change my daughters math experience — she has gone from struggling with homework and tests to a consistent understanding of the math process. Additionally, she has gone up 2 full grades in the time that Nancy has been working with her. Nancy is a caring and patient teacher who has more then once adjusted her schedule to work with my daughter for tests and midterms. I highly recommend her services and greatly appreciate her professionalism.

I love helping people with anything in particular like math or algebra. I love helping people with anything in particular like math or algebra.

    About

I greatly enjoy tutoring math and physics because it gives me a sense of fulfillment to see students finally understand how to complete a problem after struggling for so long. Math and physics can initially be very difficult to comprehend, but with practice and clear instruction they can actually be fun and interesting. My approach is to stress critical thinking skills and not just memorization. It is important to know the list of steps necessary to solve a problem, but it is even more important to know why each step is needed and how one example problem can be used to understand many other problems. Math and physics are very useful in the real world, so having a grasp on these subjects can be very beneficial. I take great pride in helping students gain the mathematical and scientific knowledge necessary to be successful in whatever field they choose to pursue. I have accumulated over 3 years of teaching/tutoring experience in math and physics courses as I helped students achieve their higher potential. I received a master’s degree in physics from Lehigh University in January 2018 and worked as a Teaching Assistant throughout the course of my graduate degree. My responsibilities included teaching physics labs and classroom recitations, creating quizzes, conducting exam review sessions, and holding office hours for students that had questions on the course material. I received a bachelor's degree in physics and minor in mathematics from Penn State University in January 2015 and previously acquired a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from Penn State. During my time between undergraduate and graduate school, I tutored students in physics and math related subjects using various tutoring websites. I have experience tutoring in subjects including high school and college level calculus, trigonometry, algebra, SAT/ACT math prep, physics, engineering mechanics, and basic math skills.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good math tutor?

Math home tutors are available for any age student, from elementary school to postgraduate studies. Rates will vary based on the tutor’s background, education and experience. To find a good math tutor, first determine your learning goals. Do you need help understanding and completing homework assignments? Are you preparing for the math portion of a standardized test? Next, read reviews from current and former students. Find someone with proven success helping students achieve their goals. If you want help on an ongoing basis, decide what your budget is and identify the tutors who fall within your range. Ask if there are additional fees for travel, as some home math tutors include travel costs in their rates and others charge extra. Ask about session length and the tutor’s teaching style, and whether they also offer online sessions or group sessions. Finally, schedule a single session with each of the math tutors you think are best to see who is the best fit.

How much do math tutors cost?

Math is a subject that’s challenging for many students. Fortunately, home math tutors can help students excel in math by working with them in focused one-on-one tutoring sessions. The cost for math tutors varies based on the type of math, the expertise and experience of the tutor, and geographic location. Pricing may range between $40 and $100 per hour, depending on the math subject. As a rule, the more complex the subject matter, the more the math tutor will charge for the lessons. The cost reflects the math tutor’s advanced studies and the work required for them to be able to teach on the subject. Frequency can also affect costs. Students can buy packages of lessons for a lower cost per session than buying individually. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a geometry home tutor is $50-$60. The national average rate for an algebra home tutor is $40-$50 per hour. For generalized math tutors, the national average ranges between $40 and $50 per hour. More intensive standardized test prep studies and math tutoring average $70-$100 per hour.

How much does home tutoring cost?

Investing in home tutoring is an investment in your child’s future. Home tutors work one on one with your child to address their challenge areas and provide room for intellectual growth that may not happen in a busy classroom. The cost of home tutors depends on multiple factors including where you live, the tutor’s background and education, the subject matter, and how often the tutor comes. Test prep home tutoring is typically more expensive than single-subject tutoring. Here are some examples of average tutoring costs:

    • National average cost for an algebra home tutor: $40-$50 per hour.
    • National average cost for a French home tutor: $30-$50 per hour.
