We were thrilled with the services of Adelphia Moving. We had a two day move with half of our stuff going from Philadelphia to New York and the other half going from Philadelphia to Delaware. The movers were extremely flexible, complied with the onerous requirements of the New York building, and were very professional throughout. I would highly recommend Adelphia Moving to anyone who asked and will certainly use them again should I move.

Alert: I almost never do reviews and it is because they tend to run very long - you have been warned! I found On-Demand Moving (ODM) through Thumbtack. I had to find a mover for my college student in Philadelphia. She and her new roommate were moving from two furnished apartments to another one within a mile (mostly boxes). Did I mention that I live in Houston? I needed to find a reliable, reasonably priced mover that would do what I was too far away help do. Lanre responded quickly and was very good with follow-up communication – answering phone calls and emails quickly. I chose ODM, who was not my cheapest quote, because Lanre could explain that more movers (3 instead of 2) were needed due to parking regulations in Philadelphia and what the cost of parking tickets were ($120!). The reviews I read also noted the care this company took with clients belongings with some even complaining about the move taking longer because of it. I would rather pay a bit more up front than deal with damaged walls and belongings afterwards – insurance claims and loss of deposits. Saving money and hassle in the long run are well worth the slightly higher cost of hiring a professional company to me. Once I got a quote and signed the contact I had to hand off the dealings to my daughter and hope for the best. She was concerned because she had a narrow window due to the assigned times from the apartment complex, had no car of her own, very limited help from friends/family and had never dealt with movers before. My daughter was fairly stressed about the move the night before because she had poor choices if ODM did not show up. She had also injured her foot so was less able to move herself – adding to her stress level. On-Demand Moving showed up in the window promised. Lanre brought 3 movers and was there to supervise the move. This greatly eased my daughter’s stress. They took everything and then some, including some items we thought my daughter would have to take herself for safety reasons. There was no damage. They ended up taking longer than the original estimate but this was due to: • The care they took with all the belongings • The two apartment pick-up required moving the truck. • The lack of cooperation of the complex with respect to access within the building. • Poor parking options due to location of the pick-up apartment and the especially the construction still underway at the drop off location requiring a longer trip from truck to door than any of us expected. In the end On-Demand Moving showed up on time and moved everything without damage. They took longer than expected but for several reasons beyond their control and that we were unable to give information about in the initial quote. They treated my daughter with respect and made a stressful day turn out wonderfully. I agree that you get what you pay for and ODM charged a reasonable price for great service. We felt that ODM has a do it right the first time attitude. I would use them again without reservation.

Art is attentive to their customer. He is flexible with the moving time. I could not specify the exact time since there were uncontrollable factors, but he was willing to lock down the date for me first and I could let him know the time as soon as I know it. The guys showed up earlier which was what I wanted. They moved stuff very quickly. I would recommend using this company if you need movers.

After we got off to a rough start, (the light rain didn't help), it was all hands on deck and the movers did a fine job. Some small knicks on my end tables, but nothing I can't fix/cover up. At the end of the day, we were satisfied.

This was a last minute move that included some very large antiques and some very tight corners. The movers were punctual, professional, and personable. They communicated well at every step of the prep, loading, and unloading process. Their price was completely reasonable and I found them to be diligent - something that isn't always the case when you hire a mover by the hour. All in all, I received great value for money and would definitely use them again. A++

The movers were responsible, efficient and courteous. They called upon arrival and provided a receipt as proof of services. Overall I was really pleased with their work. The only issue was that they never offered to throw away my old mattress from my bed and also did not offer to help re-arrange the bedroom -if needed. Other then that I would recommend them for sure.

Not only was it a great price Dave was honest. He worked with us to make sure everything went according to plan. He was pleasant and easy to work with. During my search for movers I came across many that had hidden costs or additional cost that were not in their quote. Dave gave me a quote that he said was fixed, and he was truthful and kept his word by keeping his price with no additional changes . I would use his service again and I have even given his name to my friends.

The movers I got paired with were amazing! They were very friendly, professional, and helpful with everything during the move. Not a single item of mine was damaged and arrived at the new apartment in the same condition when it was packed. It was about 90 degrees that day and these guys never slowed down and had the whole job done in 3 hours time. Amazing

John & Ed installed 2 of my tables (both regulation) during the past year and they are truly outstanding! It's hard to believe they are the last standing official pool table company in Philadelphia but it's my opinion this game is coming back with a vengeance especially considering how busy they are. They always fit me in and worked with my schedule and they were very careful navigating the large parts through my home and go the extra mile to make sure they were placed exactly where I wanted it. All the advice they gave me made me feel like a valued customer. I never knew it's actually called "cloth" not felt or that it's made of goat hair! All in all my expensive tables (one antique & one custom table done by XotikPlay) were installed perfectly and there was no mess when they left. It's really a white glove service and their prices are very fair. They also have used pool tables for sale and can procure anything you want for a more budget friendly packaged deal. Shop around and see for yourself, they are the best bang for the buck. The other guys are just movers, pool tables require a SPECIALIST! Believe me if it's worth doing it's worth doing right for years of enjoyable play. Call them and ask for John he's as friendly as can be.

Jameson Moving moved my daughter from our home in NJ into an apartment in Philadelphia on Saturday, 8/5/17. They arrived right on time and had everything in the truck very quickly. My daughter moved to the third floor of an old brownstone and the steps leading up to her room are very narrow. This made moving some of the larger pieces difficult, but Jameson Moving got all the pieces up the very small stairway. We were a little hesitant choosing Jameson Moving since they are not a well-known company and fairly new. We are very happy that we did choose them and have no hesitation recommending them to any one needing a moving service.

The guys at A to B Moving are very professional. I've hired a lot of movers over the years but my experience with A to B has been the best experience by far. I highly recommend if you need something moved. They come prepared and ready to tackle anything you may have for them, including a sofa bed that weighs almost 200 pounds.

Man Cave Movers recently moved our pool table from our old place to our new home. They were on time, courteous and did a great job. We also decided that we wanted to change the felt color to match our new game room and they were able to take care of that for us as well. We were overall very happy with their service as well as their price.

I called On-Demand Movers the day before I had to move (not my choice). Lanre had his men there the next day and I had no complaints or problems with them. My original mover, Amish, backed out at the last minute leaving me in a bind. On-Demand was local so I gave them a call. Luckily they could do it, last minute. They moved me to a storage unit & I will definitely call them again when my home is ready, hopefully not at the last minute again. Thanks Lanre and On-Demand.

From prompt email responses (and customer service follow up), to the final delivery...everything was great. We had a slight delay on the pick-up window, but I was called and made aware of the delay. (Plus, it wasn't Centurion's fault...the "move" they were picking up prior to mine was larger than the customer told Centurion.) Kevin, Kevin, and Rasheed where hard-working and kind--very professional while handling a family heirloom (a baby grand piano). I wouldn't hesitate to use Centurion Movers again.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do moving companies do?

Moving companies provide a range of services to help you physically move out of one residence and move into a new place. But moving companies can do so much more than just haul your belongings across town in a truck. The national average for moving company prices ($250-$350 per hour) reflects the range of services provided. Here are examples of all the ways moving companies can help:

  • Packing: Moving companies can pack your belongings for you. They typically charge a flat rate for both the box and the labor to pack the box. The more time-consuming the belongings are to pack, the higher the cost per box. For example, books could be $5 per box, linens $10 per box, and fine china and glassware $18 per box.
  • Specialty moving: Safely move a baby grand piano, a oversize aquarium, or other specialty items with the help of pro movers.
  • Storage: Many moving companies can store your belongings while you wait for a new home to be remodeled or closing of your new home to be finalized. If you’re moving long-distance, they often provide short-term storage free for a specific length of time, and a set rate after that (such as $60 per square cubic foot of storage space used).
  • Long-distance moves: No need to rent a trailer and move your things; a long-distance moving company can haul your belongings across the country for you. Typically they charge by the cubic foot for moves, with prices based on your destination.
  • Unpacking: Moving companies can even unpack your belongings for you after they have moved them. This is not as common, and will definitely increase the price, but can be helpful if you’re not able to tackle this task yourself.

How much does a moving company charge per hour?

When you’re ready to make a major move, it’s time to research moving companies’ prices. A moving company may charge on average anywhere between $25 and $100 per hour, per worker, for moving services. The price will vary with regional labor rates, local cost to do business, and the level of service the movers are providing. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a moving company is $250-$350 per hour. This price includes a range of pricing, from all-in service with four or more movers on site to standard hourly rates for one or two movers. Other factors that affect moving companies’ prices are packing, stairs (or elevators), and distance. For a full-service move, you pay movers to pack your belongings for you. You may pay for the cost of the moving boxes and an hourly rate per worker, and there may be additional charges for packing fragile items. Stairs will also add to your moving prices. Lifting and carrying boxes and furniture up and down stairs takes more time and creates more physical labor for the workers. Moving companies may charge flat rates for flights of stairs, such as $50-$70 per flight. A moving company may also charge a one-time fee for moving things via elevator, such as $75-$100. If parking is not accessible in front of your home or apartment building, there may also be an additional fee for the added distance to carry your belongings to the truck.

How much should you tip furniture movers?

Moving furniture is hard work and potentially dangerous unless you’re properly equipped. For anyone not ready to handle their heavy oak armoire alone, professional furniture movers can safely and efficiently move your items to another room in your house or across town as needed. The national average cost to hire heavy furniture movers is $150-$200 per hour. This rate could include multiple furniture movers working as a team to move items such as beds, armoires, billiards tables, pianos, shelves, tables, entertainment centers and more. Hourly rates can vary by region. If your furniture movers have arrived on time, done a great job, kept your home and belongings protected from scratches and dings, and completed the move as planned, a tip will be greatly appreciated. Moving companies suggest approximately 10 percent of the total bill as gratuity for those doing local moving jobs, which is also a good guideline for tipping heavy furniture movers. If the total bill for heavy moving was $100 and two workers were onsite, consider giving them $10 total, or $5 each for a job well done.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

How much does it cost to move a one-bedroom apartment across the country?

Professional movers can handle the hard work of moving your one-bedroom apartment across the country for you. You can determine what your move will cost by learning the rate your movers charge per cubic foot and how they factor distance into the total cost. Cross-country movers typically charge based on your belongings rather than apartment size because that determines how much work they will have to do. For example, a studio apartment that is crammed full of things will take more work and moving truck space than the contents of a three-bedroom apartment with very little furniture.

Cross-country movers may also have varying rates, depending on where in the country you are moving. For example, a company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. A one-bedroom apartment costs approximately $1,500 to move across the country.
