This was the third time we used Andrew / Garage Entry Systems and this was the most complicated and biggest project so far. Low headroom, short track, uneven floors....Andrew worked with us to ensure we were satisfied and that everything worked out as expected. He is very professional, reliable and helpful. His prices are fair and very competitive. I highly recommend Andrew and will continue using him for all my garage door needs. Thanks Andrew!

My wife and I hired Leo recently to help us demo a kitchen and dining room to move forward with a remodel. He showed up on time to give us a bid, which was quite reasonable, then returned the next day to remove 2 large radiators, remove flooring, and move a built in cabinet. He was communicative and professional and we plan to keep using his services throughout our project.

Repairs to parts of the living room wall were necessary due to drywall tape coming off. Also in one bathroom there was a gap between the tub and tile floor. Tom fixed all the problem areas to my satisfaction. Between the work and the initial consult he made 3 visits and was there at the time he said he would be each time. He explained what he was going to do thoroughly and finished in a timely manner. I would definitely use Tom's services again and would recommend him to others.

Our daughter bought a co-op house that had hardwood floors that were about 80 years old. Some covered about 40 years with carpeting. SEC sanded, stained and applied several coats of polyurethane before she moved in. It was 4 days of work for SEC and they entered and exited the house after the initial day on their own. Co-op had some rules about contractors, noise, outside exhaust systems and there was absolutely no problem with SEC. The floors look great and our daughter is moving in next weekend. I would recommend SEC in a heartbeat.

I found working with Charles to be a very pleasant experience. He definitely puts the customer first. He showed up on time every time. He was organized, didn’t rush and cared about my house as though it were his own, being careful to protect the hardwood floors in the work area. When he was finished he cleaned up after himself and left no trace that he had been here other than the excellent work he left behind. Charles framed out and trimmed a closet opening to accept two French-style doors. He is the fourth person to install trim in my house in the last 4 years and only his miter joints are flawless! I won’t be using any wood filler or caulking to fill in gaps on his trim work! I found his estimate to be reasonable and just about what I was expecting to pay. He had ideas of his own, but I never felt as though he didn’t respect mine. He’s got an Old School work ethic. He was focused on his work and didn’t spend all day on his phone. So, if you’re scared away by those 1-star reviews complaining of communication problems, I say don’t be. Those people didn’t hire him and they’re worse off because of it. Give him a try. You’ll be glad you did.

I'm not usually very easy to please with installation projects, but John's customer service, quality of work and professionalism were amazing. He responded unbelievably promptly and thoroughly to my questions before the project started. The quality of work he did on my wood floor installation and other small projects was excellent and the price was really reasonable. I was so satisfied with his work that I've already got him scheduled to do more projects.

Derek and his crew were great, They came in and renovated my hole house in less than a week, They painted and fixed and refinished all walls of my new house. At the end of the project he had to do a special trip to do the final touch ups on my wall, witch he did with a big smile on his face and great attitude as he always has. Home Depot was the one that refer me to him and as you know Them do an extensive back grown and reputation check. I am very glad he took the time to do my home and if I need him I'll call him to come back. Thank you very much and as soon as I get the house clean I'll post pictures of his great work. Thank you guys.

Jason did a full makeover of my guest bathroom. He replaced my toilet, tub, vanity, lights, and did the enclosure and floor with ceramic tile. All the work came out beautiful. The job took a day less than he estimated and cost exactly what he quoted. I recommend him without reservations. Matt. W.

I'm an industrial design engineer and I've been renovating property in Pittsburgh for 10+ years and I decided to hire James for two weeks to help get an 1800's house that I bought rent-able until I could revisit the house more intensly in the future. Long story short, I quickly determined that I could count on Jim and his men to show up and get down to business on a higher level. We ended up gutting the entire house, jacking up the foundation, restructuring anything that was questionable, adding and redesigning bathrooms, running all new pex water lines, new electric and new gas lines. We installed all new windows, insulation, plumbed for an additional kitchen for possible future needs. We installed new headers and opened up rooms to meet code standards, leveled floors and ceilings by adding wooden drop cieling grids and installed drywall throughout. We are currently finishing drywall and getting ready to start all the final flooring and trim work and I'm completely satisfied thus far and would not hesitate to keep them working on my property portfolio. Here are a few qualities that he and his crew display that are hard to find: --They show up on time and enjoy working regardless of the conditions. We had quite a few miserable demo days with nothing but positivity. --They don't go straight to the bar after work, they go home and spend time with their family. --They are honest. Alot of contractors will tell you they know all about everything just to find out they are faking it. If Jim didn't know something, we worked on the solution together and didn't have to backtrack, wasting time and money. --Working hrs were well kept and I didn't have to worry about my personal tools or materials coming up "lost" or missing. --They really do care about how you feel about your project and have no problem going with the flow when I constantly change my mind on design. --They are physically capable. Say you need a dumpster loaded or 100 sheets of drywall moved around the job site, it's not a problem and nobody complains. --Willingness to learn. I've done alot of improvising with OLD houses and they want to use any experience or knowledge to their advantage. All in all, it is a great experience and I'll have them back to work with me on my personal home this spring. I'll add pictures soon.

We could not be more pleased with all the work Chad did for us over the course of seven weeks. The scope of the work was fairly large, in that we did some floor plan remodeling, which included wall demolition and reconstruction, as well as an entire second floor's worth of hardwood resurfacing. Chad also painted, installed doors and related hardware, and basically did everything needed to completely remodel a second floor. The price was great, the timing was as advertised, and the professionalism was top notch. We added and amended certain aspects of the project along the way, and Chad was understanding and helpful the entire time. He kept us up to date on the overage costs (due to the changes and additions) and stayed within our budget overall. We enjoyed our experience so much that the last item we asked Chad to do was provide an estimate for his next project with us. We will definitely work with Chad again.

Ray came to fix a threshold problem I had with the laminate flooring in one bedroom. He figured out how to take care of it and repaired it accordingly. He also replaced an interior door which had to be adjusted to fit. He repaired the door jamb as well. I found him to be punctual, polite and very professional. He was careful to clean up and did a high quality job. I will definitely be hiring him again!

Mark did an awesome job for me, so good in fact that I've hired him to do a few more! He was on time, worked very quickly and did a great job. Mark replaced broken water pipes, installed toilets, removed a wall, sanded hardwood floors and so much more. He is honest and trustworthy and charges a fair price for his work. He also cleans up when he's done working. You will not regret hiring Mark, he is very good at what he does. AND... he's a veteran! I would be happy to give him a great reference... after he does a few more things for me, that is.

Ash has successfully completed several projects for me over the past couple years ranging from as large as a major exterior home renovation to as small as installing sink/bathtub/shower fixtures. He and his crew of highly skilled workers have also remodeled my kitchen, powder room, and a bathroom which included installing new flooring and fixtures, as well as painting. All of the work was quoted at a fair price and professionally completed in a timely manner. I am very pleased with the results and will not hesitate to contact Ash for future considerations. I highly recommend Ash Huber and Ashtech Industries.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long does it take to install a hardwood floor?

Hardwood floor installation can take anywhere from a few days to more than two weeks, depending on demolition, wood type, the condition of your subfloor, total square footage of the project, and installation method. Demolition is necessary if you have existing flooring you want to replace with hardwood floors. New-construction homes do not require this step, as the subfloor is primed and ready for floor installation. During demolition, the flooring crew may find that your subfloor has damaged wood, uneven surfaces or other problems that must be addressed before the new wood can be laid down. Crews may charge on an hourly rate for subfloor repair, and the work can take a few hours to several days, depending on what’s hiding underneath your floor. The wood for your new floor generally arrives a few days before any work begins. This allows the wood to acclimate to the relative humidity in your house, which prevents it from shrinking or expanding after installation and causing gaps or buckling. The actual wood installation may take several days or more, depending on the size of your home and what type of custom cutting and designs are desired. If your flooring is not prefinished, the unfinished wood must then be sanded and stained in the home to treat and protect your new investment. Typically, stain takes a full day to dry, and multiple coats are applied. Baseboards and trim must also be installed. With all these variables at play, you can see why it’s important for a wood installation pro to provide an estimate only after seeing your home.

How much does it cost to install flooring?

On average, Thumbtack customers nationwide pay $5,500 for floor installation. The cost can range much lower or higher depending on the type of flooring you select (laminate is far less expensive than exotic hardwood), the square footage of the project, and other important variables like demolition and repair work needed. Here are some examples of average floor installation cost:

  • Basic floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • This can range up to $7 or $8 per square foot when tear-out and prep work is required.
  • Laminate floor and installation cost: $3-$8 per square foot.
    • Laminate is one of the most affordable materials and can start as low as $1.50 per square foot.
  • Wood floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • $7 and up for hand-scraped oak planks and other specialized work.
  • Luxury vinyl tile installation: $3.50+ per square foot (not including tiles).
    • Cost includes prep work, underlayment, leveling and grouting.
  • Examples of additional floor installation costs:
    • Pouring concrete to level the under-flooring: $1,000-$1,500 for materials and labor.
    • Removing carpet: 35 cents or more per square foot.
    • Removing difficult ceramic or porcelain tile: about $2.25 per square foot.
      • Includes removal of the dura rock.
  • Floor repair: $75 minimum.

How much does it cost to install hardwood floors?

The cost of hardwood floors will depend primarily on the total square footage of flooring, the type of wood you select, the cost of labor in your region, and any preparation or repair work that needs to take place before installation. Selecting exotic woods, such as teak, will result in a higher cost for the project than a more affordable wood such as oak. The national average cost of hardwood floor installation is $5,750. Here are some examples of different woods and their average costs; actual costs will vary depending on the factors listed above.

  • Basic wood floor installation: $3 per square foot from a wood floor installation company.
    • The product cost for hand-scraped ¾-inch oak planks: $7 per square foot.
  • 620 square feet of maple floor:
    • Residential installation, total project cost: ~ $2,400 with five days of labor.
    • ¾-inch dark stained maple installed on top of new concrete in three rooms, a hallways, and a staircase.
      • Cost for total project: ~$3.87 per square foot.

How much are oak hardwood floors?

Installing oak hardwood floors can add value and beauty to your home. The cost of hardwood floors is typically based on the overall square footage of your new floor, the type of oak you select, any repair work your subfloor requires prior to installation, and any demolition costs to remove your old flooring. Other factors that will affect your total cost can include the regional cost of labor and business overhead of your flooring company.

A flooring installation company may charge $3 per square foot for standard installation. For hand-scraped (higher-end) ¾-inch oak planks, the cost is approximately $7 per square foot, for a total cost per square foot of about $10 as long as no repair work is required. Standard oak planks are available from big-box stores for as low as $3 per square foot, so the quality of oak you want will affect your total project cost.
